Sunny Fun Times with the Bay Area Peeps

TheReason

This little cutie is the reason we are having our Thanksgiving in the Bay Area. We had an uneventful drive, with a stayover in Yreka on Tuesday night. Mark called to say he had just realized that Paige’s daycare was closed on Wednesday and he wondered if we could come there in the afternoon to help out. Yippee!!

So instead of going to Lisa’s for the afternoon and evening, we went directly to SF and spent some great time with our little granddaughter. We went to a couple of shops to pick up some stuff for dinner that night and the next day and then took her to the park while the cleaning people were at the house.

We had lots of fun. Mark picked up fresh crabs from the Chinese seafood market and prepared them for us for dinner. Jayme arrived just in time, having finished her day in her surgery rotation.

Yesterday, Lisa, Clay and the two of us did some food prep here and then headed back to Mark’s for our Thanksgiving Day meal. Mark did the turkey on the grill and the rest of us took turns in the kitchen preparing different parts of the meal. It was all delicious and it was special to have the time with them and Paige in the middle of it all, hamming it up for our entertainment. Here she is with Poppop, playing her little red piano..

I love this photo of Lisa and Clay taking a selfie.

Today, we went back for leftovers, after a nice walk with the girls and Wilfredo. Then we went to Lands End for a hike.

I always love seeing these weathered Cypress trees acting as sentinels at the edge of the bay.

Time to restrain the child in a backpack. It takes a village to get her settled in!

Tonight, the girls took us to the movies to see Philomena. Excellent film. I highly recommend it. Judy Dench is terrific, as usual. It is a very compelling story.

Off to bed. In the morning, Mr C and I are going to the DeYoung to see the David Hockney exhibit. By the way, the weather is beautiful here in the Bay Area.

Seduced by Technique

I went back to the Oregon critque group on Saturday, after taking a time out for most of this year. I just was too busy to attend the other two meetings this year. We had a wonderful artist as our guest critic. Jennifer, is a native Scot, but has not lived there for some time. She has an MFA and is an acrylic painter and works at the Bush Barn Art Center in Salem. I took my graffiti piece and my moon pieces. She really loved the graffiti piece — the only downside was the purple/blue paint being too much the same value as the background. I agree. It was exciting to have this chance to hear comments about this daring approach to my art.

I asked her to look at my moon pieces, as a series. She thought they were boring and didn’t quite get how the person who created the graffiti piece did these. As I sat there and looked at them, I had to agree. On my over hour long drive home, I thought about it. I think I became seduced by a technique and lost my creative edge. I am going to abandon this work for awhile and go back to my more creative work.

I am working on a piece for our local SAQA show, layers. I am working on a background of fabrics that represent the 4 seasons. I have cut the pieces for summer and fall.

We have been having glorious fall weather. Yesterday’s drive to Silverton, through the Oregon countryside, was beautiful. We met at Carol Heist’s home, which is up on a hill, overlooking the Silverton reservoir. Here is the view from her deck.

We had the crit session in her studio which is built behind their home with a passageway. The studio is truly envy worthy. Here is a view from the outside.

I did some experimenting with Jacquard’s Dye Magnet today. I can’t share that until later.

Food for the Soul

aspengrove

I am checking in from our cabin in the Deschutes National Forest in central Oregon. I have never been here in the fall, and I am overwhelmed by the beauty of the Aspen Trees wearing their golden fall color. It is glorious for an Aspen lover such as myself to see these groves of Aspens in shades of gold and green.

Our cabin is in the Lake Creek Resort.

Here is the view from our porch. You can see the Lake Creek which flows from Suttle Lake.

To get to the main lodge, we walk over this quaint bridge.

We have Scooter with us and we are all enjoying walks in the cool, crisp air. I am so glad that I brought my puffy green down jacket.

When we got here yesterday, about 4 pm, we took Scooter on a 2 mile walk. We wanted to pick up some things at the Camp Sherman store, unfortunately, it closed at 4 and would not open again until Friday. This true of many places around here, we have found. The summer season is over and they are on a week-end schedule. We did get to have dinner at the Black Butte Ranch Lodge. However, they were out of just about everything on the menu – poor planning, I guess. I was so disappointed, but since it was my birthday, they comped me my steak dinner and dessert and he gave me a double poor of wine!

This morning, we took a hike through the forest to find the beautiful Metolius River. We walked from our cabin to the stocked fishing pond on the lodge property where I was able to get some close up photos of Aspen leaves.

We did not see another soul on our hike, just a couple of deer, until we got to the river. Here are some photos I took.

On the hike back we stopped to rest and take in the beauty by the fishing pond and I snapped these Aspen saplings reflected in the pond.

We went into Sisters for lunch and picked up some food for dinner tonight. I worked on the sweater I am knitting for Paige and then we took another walk. This time, we followed the path that circumvents the resort property. A shorter walk, but beautiful, too.

Mr C found this indigo blue Aspen leaf. I love it.

We are heading home tomorrow, feeling rested and satiated with the beautiful surroundings of Central Oregon.

A Fun Day with the Brilliant Daughters

StJohnsBridge

Lisa wanted to go on a day trip to some place she had never visited so we picked up Steph this morning and drove west to the charming town of Astoria where we enjoyed the ambiance of the shops and a great meal along with many cruise ship adventurers. I have never seen Astoria so bustling with activity.

That is the beautiful St. John’s bridge which we passed as we drove west. It is such a pretty bridge. We had lunch at the Astoria Coffee House and Bistro — I had great fish tacos. The place has some really interesting decor. A shelf up near the ceiling had globes lining the whole room.

I loved these whimsical folk art animal heads.

After lunch we wandered into shops and managed not to spend any money, but enjoyed looking. A vintage hardware store was especially interesting.

This sign tickled me.

It was so much fun spending the day with the girls and having great conversation. I am so lucky to have them both.

While we were there, I got a text from my friend Judy. She had already received the package that I sent yesterday. FedEx is fast. So she texted me photos as she opened it. So, now I can share the other chemo wrap that I made for her. It is actually called a Chemo Bandana. I used hand-dyed fabric and some really soft flannel.

Here I am modeling it.

Mood Indigo

moonindigoorganza

I frittered away most of today. I can’t remember what I was doing up until 2 pm when I headed down to the studio. Yesterday was a long day getting the Guild newsletter formatted and sent out. I knew that If I just got myself started, I would be a happy camper. Being creative is so energizing.

I mixed up some Jacquard indigo out on the patio and let it sit for an hour while I worked on the blouse that I am making. It was too big so I had to do some alterations. I also grabbed some  other fabrics to put in the indigo. The main reason for mixing up the indigo was to dye the shantung organza. I want to do another moon piece stitched to prefelt and shrunk. For my other piece, I discharged a circle. For this one, I wanted to create a circle resist. I drew a circle with a wash away pencil and then stitched it with a sewing machine basting stitch. I pulled the thread as tight as I could without breaking it. Then, I put a plastic bag over it and used a rubber band to close it tightly around the stitched circle. You can see it in the photo below. I folded the organza so that I have two sided to make two more shrinky dink quilts. I was very happy with the depth of color, too.

Here is my bucket of indigo.

If you have not done indigo dyeing, you might not know how it works. It is important to keep oxygen out of the dye mix so you must be very careful to not stir it or muddle with it. When the fabric comes out it is green.

indigounoxidizedAs the indigo oxidizes, it becomes blue. The more times you dip it in the indigo, the stronger the color.

This is a cotton gauze scarf shibori wrapped on a pvc pipe. There is also a scrunched bundle of fabric held together with a rubber band.

Here are the other results. The first is the cotton scarf – turned out really pretty.

These are the same fabric which was a wimpy yellow green color with some other colors in some areas. I particularly like the accordion pleated piece.

indigoscrunchandfold

These were two different hand-dyes that I overdyed. The bottom piece had lots of green in it.

indigoflatpieces

This was cotton shibori wrapped on a pole. I didn’t tie it, I just scrunched it.

polewrappedcottonI had dyed this shirt (originally white) when I did indigo dyeing with Stephanie a while ago, but the color was wimpy and not even. I really like it now.

I found some photos from our trip on my camera. This is what the sky looked like when we drove up I5 to Grant’s Pass. The smoke from the wildfires made the sun red and the sky gray.

I also found this photo of Paige. She had just discovered that she could put the little attachments on and take them off. Mark said she used to just throw them!! Such a wonderful age.
