Paigepointing

It was hard to say goodbye to this wonderful little girl. We got to spend lots of time with her over this past week-end. I happily changed poopy diapers and enjoyed spending really good times with her. Yesterday, before we came over to say good-bye, she was asking about Amma and Papa. So nice that she has names for us and gives us hugs when we show up.

I am really tired. It was very smoky in Grants Pass where we spent the night. I had itchy eyes, lost my voice and generally felt miserable and didn’t sleep very well. It was good to drive out of the smoke this morning.

On Wednesday, we decided not to drive all the way to Sonoma; instead, we drove to Muir Woods in Marin County and had a nice hike. I love being in the redwoods. The smells and the oxygen generated by the photosynthesis are wonderful memories for me.

Here are some photos from our day.

We did the hillside hike and so I was glad that I wore my sturdy walking shoes.

We drove past a huge stand of eucalyptus trees and I wanted to stop and pick up some leaves for natural dyeing — but not for me, for Judy Carpenter, who has been doing some beautiful dyeing with plants. There are some eucalyptus leaves that leave a red imprint. Unfortunately, we were on a narrow road with no place to pull off.

One more gratuitous photo of the adorable grandchild:

I will post more about our week, tomorrow. For now, I need to call it a day.

Thought I Would Check In!

We made it to San Francisco and have been very busy since, getting in lots of time with Paige over the week-end. She is back in day care today and Mama and Papa are at work.

Baybridge7-13

I always love driving over the Bay Bridge and seeing the SF skyline. We stopped to see Lisa and Clay in Oakland before we went over the bridge. They were married at Oakland city hall on Friday morning and so they are legally wife and wife!! We are so happy for them.

Paige or Peesh (as she calls herself) was excited to have company. She is one of those kids, like her Grandma, that gets energized being around lots of people. And then we crash!

Saturday was Jayme’s birthday so we went out to brunch in the morning. We are staying in a live/work loft in the mission on Harrison and  20th. More about that in another post.

Here she is enjoying something silly on my phone. And with her beautiful Dr. Mama.

On Saturday night, I made a birthday dinner for Jayme and Lisa and Clay joined us for the evening. It was lots of fun and we ate everything. I think there were two pieces of the vegan cake left over.

Yesterday, Jayme had to be at the hospital for her 12 hour shift. We spent the day with Mark and Paige. Here is Poppop (her name for Mr C) reading to her. She loves books and running around outside.

On this particular Sunday, part of 24th and Valencia Streets were closed to traffic and people walked, biked, skooted, skated and generally had a good time in the streets.

Paige wanted one of these huge bubbles to come near her, but she is too short.

She loved hanging out in this tent, part of an REI display.

I love SF murals, particularly in The Mission.

After a while, we all got hungry. Here is Paige eating one of her favorite foods – ’tilla (tortilla).

We stopped at a lovely playground where Paige had a good time. She was determined to run through the spouting water.

She is tall for her age, but looks pretty miniscule next to her big Daddy!!

Our condo is next door to this restaurant. Don’t think they have anything gluten free, but we are all going there on Thursday. Mia arrived in Oakland yesterday to go to the Young Artist’s camp at California College of Art so L and C will bring her over to spend the evening with us.

Today, we went for a long walk in our neighborhood. Here are some photos from our walk.

3x3box

We are on the road, heading for San Francisco, spending the night in Yreka, CA. It was extremely hot in Southern Oregon and Northern CA. We are trying to get our motel room down to a comfortable sleeping temperature.

I was so bummed to find out that the Grants Pass Museum of Art closes at 4 pm – what?! We didn’t get there until 5:15 so I did not get to se the SAQA Sightlines exhibit. I think it closes this week so, I missed my opportunity. I had planned to blog about it.

So, I am just checking in. I brought my 3x3s and the beads so that I can continue stitching them together. I also am making progress on Paige’s sweater, after taking a hiatus.

We dropped Scooter of at the K-9 resort and he was so happy to see his friends there, human and canine. We believe that Scooter is the kind of dog who will be happy wherever he is!

I am watching Project Runway – I have the greatest husband – to let me watch this. He is doing some pretty good critiquing!

I am exhausted and on sensory overload. I have managed to get mostly unpacked. I couldn’t do laundry until this afternoon because Mr C had a plumber here putting in a new water line. The old one sprung a leak and lots of money later, we have higher water pressure and no leak. At least there is something to show for it. I also stocked up on some food as Mr C, on his own, had eaten just about everything in the house!

I had an extremely busy time at the conference. Not much down time at all. I will try to share some highlights. Jane Dunnewold is president of the board. Here she is with Marci Rae McDade, journal editor, talking about the SDA website.

Speakers: Janet Echelman who does these amazing giant rope structures is a phenomenal force. She was our keynote speaker. If you can, visit her website and watch her TED talk.

Another favorite of mine was Otto von Busch, a Swedish clothing designer,  who wants to release us from being slaves to the fashion industry through “hacktivism” or transforming your clothes into original works of art. One of his projects is to invite people to bring a stained piece of clothing and paint it with a black motif – he says black is always in fashion.

Other great speakers were Natalie Miebach, who uses the graphs and numbers of tides, weather and other natural phenomena, to create her baskets and installations and Elissa Auther, who spoke to us about fiber in the contemporary art world. I really enjoyed listening to Michael James talk about his textile journey and the difficulty of having his wife diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers and the resulting grief and how it has effected his work.

It was wonderful to reconnect with old friends and to make new ones. Judith Trager, who is on the SAQA board, was at the conference and we spent a lot of time together. Leslie Tucker Jennison, lives in San Antonio, and was at the conference and graciously, took Judith and I and other friends away from the hotel to enjoy some of the better food of the city. Here are Leslie on the right and Judith in the center, at the pre-fashion show fundraiser. The hostess, Robin Early, is reflected in the mirror.

The fashion show, always a big hit, was held at the University of The Incarnate Word. Those of us who attended the cocktail party had front row seats on the runway.

I managed to spend some time with the vendors and bidding in the silent auction. I will get some photos of my loot tomorrow to share with you. I saw these carved stamps, but I didn’t buy any.

I did spend some money at this booth. I bought the top that is hanging there.

The conference closed on Sunday around noon. One of the highlights for me was seeing Jane Dunnewold’s new studio. She has a house with a kitchen and several rooms for “dry” work — designing, critiquing, etc. She built a brand new wet studio. Here are some shots of that.

I would love to spend a week dyeing, discharging and/or printing in this place. Several San Antonio artists share the space with Jane and had there work displayed. I especially liked the prayer flags by Sharon Rowley. Here is a closeup of them.

We had a party at the studio for all of our great volunteers. Most of them were from San Antonio or Austin. Jane arranged for a Mariachi band to serenade them at the end.

I was back at work on Monday, checking in Post-conference workshop participants and attending a board/staff meeting. I left Monday afternoon for a long trip home via Las Vegas and that turned into a longer than anticipated layover because a flight was delayed coming in from Orlando. By the time I got home, I only wanted to get into my own bed and sleep for 12 hours. I only managed 7.

Needless to say the last month has been a whirlwind for me from Artists Among Us to the wedding and then the SDA conference. I survived and enjoyed myself through it all. We are all still smiling about the beautiful wedding. I am waiting for the official photo release!!

A Happy Day with Touches of Hot Pink

lcbunting

I am exhausted and in pain from a pinched nerve in my right hip. But, I know you have been waiting to see some photos of our happy times with Lisa and Clay. I will start with the bunting made by a friend that hung in their  backyard for the rehearsal dinner. We had delicious catered tacos and had a wonderful evening with family and Clay and Lisa’s closest friends.

KarynandPaige

Jayme’s mother flew in from Denver to help them with Paige this week. Jayme is taking the medical school boards this week and is studying like crazy!

The wedding day was beautiful. Steph did all of the flowers and the bouquet so she was very busy on Friday and Saturday. She was so nervous, but ended up loving it and doing a great job. You will see the flowers in some of my later photos.

poufybackdrop

Lisa conceived of this backdrop for the outdoor wedding. Several of her friends came to her house last week and helped make these poofs and other ornaments. It was very pretty and very Lisa. There were tissue paper flowers tied to the backs of chairs at the dinner.

We all arrived early to have lots of family photos take. Here are some that I took so I don’t have any with Mr C and I in them.

No photos allowed during the service. Let me just say that it was beautiful. It was officiated by my niece, Robin, a Presbyterian minister, who is also a lesbian. Mia did a lovely reading. The girls had written beautiful vows for each other.

Here they are, newly married, with beautiful smiles.

There was a lovely sit-down dinner of delicious vegan foods — the paella was so good. Each person got a stone, painted by Lisa’s friend, Diana, and a little hot pink tag identifying the table.

Here is the lovely table decor with little birch logs and glasses of flowers. Of course, Lisa did the table numbers.

Each of the girls selected 3 people, family and friends, to give toasts. Stephanie’s was funny and hearkened back to her idolization of Lisa as a child. Steve was the last to go and it was the best. There was not a dry eye in the house. All of Lisa’s gay friends came up to him and thanked him.

Then, the dancing commenced. Here are L and C doing their first dance. I managed to spend most of the evening on the dance floor, boogieing my buns off. Had a great time. I love Lisa’s friend and made an attempt to talk to each of them —many are  among some of the more famous style bloggers on the internet.

I had to get up early and get stuff together to fly to San Antonio for the Surface Design Conference. I was still smiling as I flew to  LA and on to San Antonio. I have some great photos of my time here and my workshop with Kerr Grabowski – I will get to that tomorrow.

This was one of the happiest of family events for us. Our brothers and sisters and spouses came and it was so good to have them with us for this special event.
