Scooterreadyforcamp

We have been ensconced in our lovely Mill Valley, CA home for a couple of days. We had an uneventful drive down except that I had a raging sinus headache which miraculously disappeared after being in this lovely, warm dry climate. Scooter was happy to go to the K-9 resort for a few days to catch up with his doggie friends.

When we got to CA on Wednesday, it was warm and sunny with beautiful cloud formations.

I always love to see the golden hills of summer as I drive through CA.

Our Mill Valley rental is up a canyon and in the redwoods. This is a view from the wrap-around deck.

This lovely Bougainvillea is growing on the deck. You can see a fuchsia behind it.

Steph and her family arrived at lunch time yesterday. The house is very spacious and with nice amenities so we are having a great time. Last night, Clay’s family came over for dinner so that we would have a chance to get better acquainted before the big events. I made roasted veggies and quinoa and potato salads — all vegan and gluten free. And, Mr C grilled assorted sausages. I had fresh berries and ice cream for dessert.

Today, Steph and Jack got up early and went to the SF Flower Mart to buy flowers for the wedding. She is now working on Lisa’s bouquet.

I am waiting for my New York family to show up for lunch and then tonight is the rehearsal shindig at Lisa and Clay’s home in Oakland. I am having a wonderful time seeing so many people I love. Not sure when I will check in again.

Happy Days

paige4-11-13

We made it to San Francisco on Thursday afternoon. We had beautiful weather for driving. We stopped in downtown San Francisco so that I could run through some stores to see if there was anything I might feel like wearing to Lisa’s Wedding. We received our invitation before leaving town.

It was a very discouraging venture. I found only one thing that I felt like trying on. It was too big. I could find nothing that would fit me that I liked.

Fortunately, our next stop was at Paige’s home where we found that smiley face up there. What a delight she is. She is on the verge of walking and is learning new words every day.

On Friday, we got to spend most of the day with her. Here she is chowing down on yogurt at breakfast with us.

Later in the day, we took her on a walk to the park. We pushed her in the swings and played on the slide.

Love this chartreuse home.

Friday night was our daughter-in-law, Jayme’s, graduation from the Master’s program for her medical studies, a joint program between UC Berkeley and UCSF Medical School. The graduation took place in Berkeley. We went over to the East Bay early so that I could check out a boutique in Oakland. I think I found my mother of the bride outfit. It is very un-mother of the bride and very artsy and me. Maybe I will talk about it more at a later time. Lisa gave her blessing.

Here is the lovely courtyard of the venue for the graduation.

And here she is with the class of 16 students. Each one had such interesting backgrounds and experiences. Paige was cited as their 17th participant since Jayme had her while in the program. They all love her so much.

We are so proud of her!!! In two years we will celebrate her becoming an M.D.

I leave you with one more photo of the sweet Paige. Today, we celebrated her first birthday. Lots of fun ensued. More later.

Some R and R in the California Desert

I have been having a wonderful respite in the California desert with Mr C and his brother, Mike, and his wife, Ann. The weather was sunny and warm. I was again mesmerized by the night sky out in the desert. We drove out to the observatory the first night to gaze up at the Milky Way, such an impressive sight.

We had an early departure from Portland and watched the sun rise as we flew to San Diego. We picked up our rental car and had a fun drive on back roads to Palm Desert. The horse sculptures above were so cool. There was one other horse across the road, landing on the bluff. I always love the landscape of California. It is so rugged and diverse.

Just before we drove down into Palm Desert, we stopped at a view point high over Palm Desert. You can see the road we would eventually take, snaking through the mountain side. Palm Desert is down below.

On the way out to Twentynine Palms, I always love seeing the giant wind mills.

We spent one day, hanging out in Palm Springs with Mike and Ann, visiting thrift shops, having lunch and checking out the location of events we were planning to attend on Saturday.

Saturday was devoted to attending the Modernism Expo. I so enjoyed the show and sale of Mid-century Modern furniture and art. Here are some photos I took.

This piece was not really Mid-century, but it was so unique. It is a hand chiseled wood vessel with folds and creases. So beautifully crafted.

Later, we attended an outdoor exhibit of modern furnishings and finishings and a display of pre-fab houses. The most incredible one was created from a junked temporary school trailer. No photos!!

We also did a quick tour of the Palm Springs Art Museum. The special exhibit was incredibly wonderful constructions from found stuff by the Campana Brothers from Brazil.

I also enjoyed getting up close and personal with one of Deborah Butterfields horse sculptures. This photo was taken from the floor above. She constructs the horses from old wood pieces. Then it is taken to a foundry where the wood pieces are disassembled and a bronze cast is made of each and the horse is reconstructed from the bronzes pieces. Quite amazing, really.

Today, we drove back to San Diego and met up with friends at the Visions Art Museum to see the current Quilt Visions juried show. It was so marvelous. Del Thomas met us there and gave us a wonderful docent tour. Here is a photo of Del with Karen Rips (another Twelve member) and me.

Now, we are ensconced in our hotel in San Diego, watching Downton Abbey. Tomorrow, we are going to the San Diego Zoo. Can’t wait to take photos of the animals!

Hanging Out in San Francisco

Friday, October 19th, 2012

I am having a wonderful time in San Francisco. You can see that Paige looks pretty cute in her hoody. She likes to chew on the buttons. And, she has room to grow so she can wear it for a while.

Yesterday, after I arrived, Lisa took me to downtown SF so that I could do some shopping at Macy’s which has a huge selection fo Eileen Fisher fashions. I bought several things and had them sent to my house to avoid paying the enormous sales tax. Then, we went to Nordstrom where she bought boots that she has been dreaming about, and I bought shoes that I love.

Lisa and Clay took me out to dinner at The Plant Cafe in the Embarcadero. We sat outside by the bay. It was a beautiful evening.  Then, they dropped me off at Mark and Jayme’s. Paige was already down for the night so I had to wait until this morning to see her. I got to spend the better part of the day with her, by myself. Here she is having some rice cereal for lunch.

Paige and her Daddy are best buds. Her face lights up when either parent comes into the room.

I managed to get one 3 x 3 done before I came down here so it will be  catch up when I get home, next week.

Halfway Home

Monday, August 27th, 2012

We have left the California Coast and are in Ashland, OR, on the way home. I am ready for some time at home and in my studio.

We had a great time in California — hanging with the family. I got to see Paige, Mark and Jayme for an all too short time on Saturday. On Sunday, Lisa and Clay came by and it was great to see them.

On Friday, I spent some wonderful time with my friends that I used to hang out with when I lived in Santa Rosa. We had lunch and lots of talking at Janet’s home. She is 88 and an unbelievably energetic and happy woman.

Here she is, with my friend, Pam, in the background.

And here are Pat and Diane. Pat, Diane, Janet and Rita and I were the gang of five. We used to have so much fun together. They have added some new people to the group since I left.

On Friday night, the family went out to a great restaurant in Valley Ford which specializes in oysters. It was fun.

Saturday, was the birthday dinner which was catered. Here is the table with wine ready for guests.

Here is the caterer describing the menu.

Mark, Jayme and Paige came up for the afternoon and evening. Here is Paige with her second cousins.

Here is the birthday boy with his two grandchildren and the birthday cupcakes.

I brought Paige the Steiff bear that Mark had when he was a baby.

I also bought her this adorable chullo – a Peruvian hat!

On Saturday, the fog went away and we had a beautiful sunny day. It was perfect for a barbecue and fun on the beach.

Here are the rest of my 3 x 3’s for the last few days.
