All That Jazz

Wednesday, December 12th, 2012

Today must be 12/12/2012 because it is reveal day for the latest Twelve by 12 theme, sweet. You can check out the blog and see what sweet things await you. When Terri announced the theme, I went to the dictionary and found the last definition was:

pleasing to the ear; making a delicate, pleasant, or agreeable sound; musical.

So, I knew back then that I wanted to interpret the sweet theme as jazz music. I stayed with the batik theme, too and didn’t have to buy any new fabric. The trumpet auditioned several fabrics before I settled on this one. I had a lot of fun cutting the music notes and placing them. Click on photo to see a larger version.

I found a beautiful hand-dyed thread that I bought 3 or 4 years ago that was a perfect blend for this.

I did simple straight line stitching in a diagonal pattern. The size of the quilt made it a bit awkward to arrange the instruments. This was a fun, no brainer piece to do. I enjoyed it.

Here is a detail:

Here is Tuesday’s 3 x 3.

Today, I am going to the Columbia Fiberarts Guild meeting and then out to lunch with some friends. Janice Arnold who does gigantic felted installations is our guest speaker. It should be a great day.

Sleep Deprived

Thursday, September 20th, 2012

I was up at 4 and at the Quilt Show by 5. Our segment didn’t happen until 6:45 so we had a lot of waiting to do!

Here is Drew doing a promo with a long arm dealer.

Here he is with one of the show organizers, Geri Grasvik, and the best of show quilt. One of those Swarovski crystal studded quilts – this one was from Germany.

Here is a link to a video of Terry and I doing our schtick. Enjoy! Our time was cut short so our scripted plan fell apart, but Drew is good at punting and just rolled with it.

I went back out to the show for a bit after lunch and took some photos. You can see some of the Twelve exhibit on the Twelve blog. I came home and slept for two hours so that I could stay awake to watch Project Runway.

Here are two of my quilts in the show.

The lighting on Forest was really harsh as it was hung up quite high.

Here are some quilts that I liked. I put the label for each one underneath.

I was so excited to see this Painted Hills quilt!!

Trisha uses metal in her quilts.

I just love this quilt by my friend Suzy. Many people have chickens in their backyards in Portland – you can have up to 3, but no roosters.

I really love Bonnie’s quilts. I use a lot of her handdyes.

Not much else to say tonight. I am too tired.

Ha!

I did it. I muddles through the day. I did some SDA work. I took Scooter for a walk in the Rhodie Garden and I picked up my CSA veggies.

I also got the quilt show paperwork done and got labels, hangers and bags done for the Rhythm and Hues show. I need to turn everything in tomorrow.

It is the quarterly meeting of Columbia Fiberart Guild tomorrow and our guest speaker is the eloquent Elizabeth Barton. It has been my quest for some time to get her on our program. She is teaching a two day workshop on Thursday and Friday — Working in a Series.

I still don’t have my stuff ready for the workshop – that will have to happen tomorrow afternoon.

Monday Melange

Monday, June 11th, 2012

This orange 3 x 3 was made with one of the little fused scraps that I received from Melody Johnson, eons ago. They come in handy when I am brain dead!!

Today was a day of cleaning, grocery shopping and cooking. A special house guest is arriving tomorrow, and I am very excited.

Kerr Grabowski, surface designer extraordinaire, is flying in to Portland tomorrow, and I get to entertain her (or vice versa) until Sunday morning. On Wednesday evening, she is doing a lecture for Columbia Fiberarts Guild and Thursday and Friday, she is teaching deconstructed screenprinting. I have been wanting to take a workshop with her for so long.

I just rewatched her dvd, to get myself psyched up. Now, I won’t be able to sleep, I am so excited.

I am planning some fun trips with her during our free time: Japanese Garden, Oregon College of Arts and Craft, Contemporary Craft Museum, a drive out to Multnomah Falls and lunch in Hood River. Gonna be fun. I may not be blogging much or making 3 x 3s — all depends. I think we are going to have a week of fairly good weather. Since she lives on the Mississippi Delta, she will probably appreciate some coolish Portland weather.

So, now you know where I am, if I am not here!!

Distracted

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

I keep thinking about the arrival of the grandbaby and our trip in April. I really should be kicking it up a notch to get every thing done that I need to do before we leave. I talked to Jayme and Mark tonight, and they have assured me that there will be a baby and soon!!

That is today’s 3 x 3 up there. And here is yesterday’s. which was 3.14!

I have been plugging away on the Tobermary piece. It is one of those things that I agreed to do and I am not doing what I want to do, but I think this will be nice when it is done.

Yesterday was Columbia Fiberarts Guild. We had a wearable art fashion show and some of the members had good stuff for sale. I bought some hand-dyed fabric and some curly roving. Here are some other goodies being offered.

This is a jacket made by a member. I love how she does this stitching on a lot of her work.

Bonnie Bucknam was in Guatemala and brought back these beautifully embroidered tops to sell. She has them for sale, here.
