Happy Days

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

Today is Mr C’s birthday. We celebrated yesterday with the Portland contingent of the Congdon Clan. We had a great time at the Mythbuster’s tour and then out to dinner at Jake’s, a Portland seafood restaurant that is an institution.

Today, was church and the Forty-niner’s football game. They lost, but it was a great game and brought back memories of all the years that we have watched the Niners. Mark braved bad weather to get back from Tahoe today just so he could see the game. My mom was such a football fan. She loved the NY Giants. She and Mark used to have some rousing smack talk on the phone when the two teams were playing each other.

I did venture out in the rain today to look for the latest issue of Quilting Arts which has an article about the Twelve x Twelve group. I keep getting e-mails from people who tell me they have loved reading it. But, alas, I could not find it in any of the stores that I went to. I will try Barnes and Noble when I am out that way later this week.

Up above is yesterday’s 3 X 3. While I was out, I bought a new darning foot or free motion foot for my machine. I think it worked better than the one that came with it, but I am still having problems on these small pieces. The green and the red in the two pieces I did for yesterday and today, come from the same piece of hand-dyed fabric. Here is today’s 3 x 3:

Here is the last of the nice presents that I have received. This is a bluebird by the very talented Teri Stegmiller, another Twelve. I was so excited when this showed up in my mailbox.

Tomorrow, is a busy day. I have a teeth cleaning and then a lunch meeting with the steering committee for the Trinity Artists Among Us. We have lots of territory to cover. Time is flying by too fast!!

I hope you have had a great week-end.

In the Red

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

Actually, I am also in the pink. I am having fun pulling out all my red fabrics and scraps to create with. Making a 3 inch square composition is a bit of a challenge. I find myself thinking about it during the day. This one was inspired by some pre-cut and fused scraps that I had in a bag of goodies. It is yesterdays 3 x 3.

Today’s, 3 x 3 is made from red silk organza and silk organza scraps that have been painted. I did some handstitching.

I have not done nearly as much new year organization in my studio as I had planned for this week. I have had a few distractions. I am coordinating an exhibit of June Underwood’s paintings at Trinity. Yesterday, we hung the show. Here is a peek.

Tomorrow night is the opening reception and I am doing the food and wine for that. So, Mr C and I made a trip to Costco today to pick up some goodies. If you are in the area, I hope you will come by.

This morning, I had a check in with my Dr. I am happy to report that my blood pressure was normal and I do not have to go back for 4 months. I get so stressed about having by BP checked, that I am always sure that it will be high so it was a relief.

I found this box of bee’s wax crayons when I was Christmas shopping. I am thinking they might be fun to experiment with on fabric.

I am watching Project Runway: All Stars. What fun to see all the divas back in the workshop together.

The Sunshine Quilt

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

This is a bad photo of Gwen’s quilt. I finished piecing it yesterday. This morning I ran out to Mill Ends and found a couple of fabrics for borders. The inner border is a stripy print with yellow, orange and green and the outer borders are a pin dot orange. I love the sunshiny aura of this quilt. I was too tired to sew the outer borders on tonight. I hope to get that done tomorrow and then I can sandwich it and get it quilted.

Mr C had a meeting in Corvallis today — sort of a job interview with a start up company run by a former employee of his. Looks like he might do some part time consulting for them. He was gone all day and I must admit to being a bit lonely. Of course, Scooter kept me company. I took him for two walks. It was a gorgeous sunny day, a bit brisk, but beautiful none the less.

I took Scooter to the Rhodie Garden. We hadn’t paid a visit for some time. The water was so sparkling from the sun. Here are some photos that I took with my iPhone.

A Gaggle of Geese

This photo is of the triplet trees on the Reed Campus.

Tomorrow night is the opening of our annual December Trinity Arts outreach art show and sale. This year, we are featuring art from Cuba to benefit the Center for Cuban Studies and its art programs for children with Down Syndrome in Cuba. We are having a fiesta with Cuban music and food. My friend Diane and I are going to try out our new virtual terminals for Art Sales. We couldn’t use the Square Up because the funds go in to the church account so the bank set us up with their system that works with iPhones and iPads.

More Book Crafting

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

I had the last of a three session book crafting class at Trinity tonight. I didn’t show last week’s book because it is a complicated 3-D book which requires some thought and execution of each layer before it is assembled. I will get back to it eventually.

Tonight, we did two  books. I used some of my art cloth for the cover of this square book.

The inside is a complicated fold and glue. Here is an idea of what the inside looks like. I think this will get some collaging done to the inside pages.

The other book is a cute little triangle.

You get 3 books in one as you can open up from each of the points and you have 4 pages for writing or doing something artsy.

This was lots of fun and a bit of a diversion for me.

I have been working very hard at getting the quilting and burying of threads done on the Alternate Universe piece.

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I will take tomorrow morning off to hand out with my friends at STASH.

I asked Steph to come over and take some new head shots for me, without glasses. Here are two that I like and will be using.

The top one was taken in front of my Autumn Aspens. I received an e-mail with the judges comments from the La Conner show about that quilt. I don’t like to enter judged shows because I think they do not understand “art” quilts.

Here are the comments about this quilt.

Best features of this quilt are:

Good choice for background. Nice machine quilting stitch. Thread choice complements overall design.

Areas which most need improvement:

Placement of the leaves does not feel natural.

That last comment tickled me and irked me, a bit. As an artist, I do not try to replicate nature exactly. I looked at many aspen photos when I was working on this. My goal was to show the variation in colors and the way aspen leaves hang in clumps. Here is an example.

Am I overreacting?

Family Creativity

Monday, September 12th, 2011

This is a gorgeous necklace made from yarn, designed by my daughter, Stephanie. Isn’t it gorgeous?

She and her creative partner, Maria, have designed a new little, limited edition book of two projects and how to illustrations. It features the beautiful yarns of Quince & Co.

You can read more about their collaboration on their blog, 3191 Miles Apart. The book, Interwoven, is available here.

I had a busy week-end. I have volunteered to be a helper a couple of Sundays a month for our Sunday School program — in the art activity room, of course. We had the open house yesterday. I also was helping with the Trinity Art’s Committee table during coffee hour. Every activity had a table — er, half a table to display their programs for the coming year. I created a poster for the workshops I am coordinating and a take away bookmark of all our events for the year.

Today, I have been working on labels for my Twelve by Twelve colorplay quilts for their trip to Houston. I ordered large plastic bags for each of the complete mosaics. The label has a photo of the mosaic and a label to identify it’s order when they are hung.

Terry is coming over later this week and we will get them all attached to the felt panels, packaged and ship them to Houston. Time is flying by.
