Duh!

Friday, July 29th, 2011

This is my Felted Fantasy which I have been working frantically to finish. My guild, Columbia Fiber Arts, has been asked to do a special exhibit at the APWQ show in Tacoma next month. We were asked in part because we are guild that embraces all the fiber arts, not just quilting. With that in mind, I wanted to enter some non-quilted work. I have really enjoyed doing felted work with some embellishments. I made 12 of these pieces in a rainbow of colors.

When I did the Twelve by Twelve piece, I used a silk organza for the background — the color was similar to colors in the felted pieces.

I got it into my mind that I needed to do the silk organza background so I went looking for something neutral that would work with all the color. I ended up with a goldish yellow. I was stitching the felted pieces on to the background and ick! It was not working.

So, I decided to give up. I didn’t see how I could find a new background to show off the felted pieces. I had my duh moment after I went to bed and was drifting off to sleep. It was so obvious — all those colors needed black to set them off. I found a piece of black felt and then fused the pieces and voila!

Here are some of the individual pieces. I was rushing to get this turned in so some of my photos are pretty blurry.

I know many of you probably think I have lost my marbles with these pieces, but I so love making them. I almost can’t stop once I get going. After the show, I plan to mount them individually for sale.

The other piece that I entered is the painted silk water piece that was in the SDA Member’s show.

The deck is almost finished. We will be moving back the furniture this week-end and I will get some photos taken. I will be doing some housecleaning this week-end as I am hosting the guild new and old board meeting luncheon on Monday.

Felting Frenzy

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

I am having so much fun creating these little felted compositions which I plan to arrange together in a larger piece. There are 12 in all. I used the prefelt that I have been working on for a few weeks. I have the machine felting done and now, I am doing the handstitching and beading.

I have to get back to work. I thought I would just check in and share some photos.

This and That on a Thursday

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

It has been a day of getting odds and ends of things done. I felted three more colors for backgrounds for my next  felted piece. I need to do at least six more for the composition I have in mind.

Yesterday, I picked up 2 quarts of Marionberries at the farmer’s market. They are an Oregon treat and, like the Hood strawberries, I have grown to love them and like to put several batches in the freezer. I spread them on a big baking sheet and freeze them and then I vacuum pack them in plastic baggies. In the middle of the winter, they taste like summer. I also picked a quart of raspberries in my garden which we will  enjoy some and freeze some.

We have had so much rain that the weeds had taken over my veggie garden so I spent an hour pulling weeds and tending my poor plants that are hoping for some sunshine and warm temperatures.

Tonight we had a veggie feast from my CSA pick up — roasted baby carrots and roasted beets with braised beet greens and an arugula salad with delicious heirloom tomatoes. The tomates were not from Oregon, but were left over from the focaccia sandwich. When I was preparing the beet greens, I was taken with the beauty of the greens and had to snap a photo of them.

We were hoping that the railing would be installed on the deck before the week-end, but they couldn’t get the aluminum ordered in time so we have to wait until next week. Mr C has been working on the area between the house and the garage. I will be happy to have that finished as I have to navigate a construction area every time I go to the freezer or my car.

I took a big sigh of relief yesterday when we were given until September 30th to get work entered in the next SAQA Oregon show. I need that extra month.

Every Day

Friday, June 24th, 2011

I am committed to spending some time in my studio every day. Today, I made two more flat felts using the water soluble stabilizer. I need to get out to Fabric Depot to pick up some chiffon to use on these.

I also diluted some black fabric pain with water and painted a lighter shade of gray silk organza. I am very happy with this one which is on the left, original in the center and the darker one on the right.

I am getting my energy back! I went to Pilates this morning and took Scooter for a nice walk before lunch.

I am taking Mucinex, per my Dr’s office instructions, but have to dring a glass of water every hour that I am awake. So, you know where I am spending a lot of time! The good thing is, it is working. Along with the saline rinses, I am feeling much less congested.

The huge all neighborhood Eastmoreland Yard/Garage sale is tomorrow and Sunday. Steph and family will be here early to hit the sales. We always enjoy this and have found some great bargains. The weather promises to be perfect.

Have a great week-end!

Eureka!

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

For my past machine needle felting forays, I have been using prefelt for the base. It is quite thick and it gets expensive to get all the colors you want. I read someplace on the web about using water soluble stabilizer as a base for creating flat felt.

Instead of running out and buying some, I decided to look in my drawer of stabilizers. And low and behold, there was a huge sheet of Superior Water Soluble Stabilizer.

I cut a piece and laid out some fibers horizontally and vertically and started needle felting. It worked like a charm. The first photo is the front side and here is the back.

Nice! Here it is after soaking in water to remove the stabilizer.

I want to do a large piece, similar to the Twelve x Twelve piece that I did, for the special exhibit that our guild is doing at the APWQ show in Tacoma in August.

My other activity this afternoon was to try painting the gray shibori with some watered down black paint to see if I could make it grayer. It worked.

Maybe it is too gray. I might have to try again with more water.

The old deck is gone!

I have to remember that I can’t walk out of the dining room to the deck!! I think I need some of that yellow do not enter tape.

Mark and Jayme arrived at lunch time yesterday. We had a fun family dinner at a local pizza restaurant.

Miles loves rhubarb crisp, which was the dessert on the menu last night.

He was not happy about sharing it with the rest of us! Actually, we had two for the table.

Today, M and J packed up their backpacks and headed for Seattle and then they are going on to the San Juan Islands to go camping and kayaking. The will come back here next week to spend 4th of July week-end with us. Then, Jayme is going back to work on her summer research project while Mark builds our new deck.
