Keeping Our Cool

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

It was supposed to get up to 100° by 5 pm tonight, but it only registered 94° on our outdoor thermometer on the deck. But it was definitely not a good day for outdoor activity. We keep the shades down and turn on fans, and it is tolerable. M & M are here and spending the night. We had dinner at Burgerville and enjoyed the air conditioning.

This morning, Reva and I drove to Beth’s for STASH and found out that Terry has the crud – lost her voice, etc. – and was not coming.  I always miss having Terry at our gatherings. Gale brought her sister, Judy, who is visiting from Las Vegas. It was nice to see her again. We shared some of our work and caught up on our stuff. We had lunch at a wonderful local Italian restaurant. I had a grilled eggplant sandwich on focaccia with pesto aioli. It was delish.

I had to get home to be there when Steph brought M & M to spend the night. I haven’t done much today. Too hot. I did the chilly fiber sketch. Oh, I had  a problem tonight when I was ironing my latest batch of organza pojagi pockets. They melted!! Shoot! I didn’t know that I had any synthetic organza in my stash. I think I can still use it, but  when I put it next to the silk, you can see the difference. Sooo, I might have to do some more painting.

I got the results of the CT Scan of my sinuses today. I have a clogged Sphenoid Sinus which is way back behind the eye. I have had this problem in the past, but it was treated with very strong antibiotics, but I don’t think it has ever been totally clear.

The ENT Doc is recommending surgery, but I will not meet with him until after the 15th because he is on vacation. Something daunting to think about.

Heat Wave

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

Portland went from 50s on the 4th of July to 90s today. I am so blessed to have a cool basement studio. It is a wonderful place to be in the summer — not so much in the winter.

Yesterday, I was moving in slow motion. My allergies were ramped up and I didn’t get much done except for taking Scooter to the groomer’s for his hot weather do.

Today, I had a lunch date with my friend Reva and her friend, Libby, who has been a part of her life since high school. I had heard so much about her and so it was fun to meet her in person.

This afternoon, I got some time in the studio to cut some more painted organza strips before I went back out into the hot weather to go to the farmer’s market. I scored some wonderful fresh halibut that we had for dinner.

Tonight I stitched some more organza to make more pockets for the red and black piece.

I really like the latest batch that I finished yesterday.

The groomer really gave Scooter a trimming. He looks more poodly, now.

Tomorrow is STASH at Beth’s house. Love getting together with my quilty friends and sharing our work and stories and lots of laughs.

The Long Week-end

Monday, July 5th, 2010

Since I am retired,  I sometimes lose track of what day it is. This past week-end intensified that. It has been too long. I managed to get some studio work done. I painted more organza and some silk for a background.

I wasn’t sure what to do for a background for this next piece, but I auditioned the painted silk and I quite like it.

I stitched up some more pojagi pockets from the newly painted organza. I used a bit more red.

I also did a little landscape for my sketchbook.

On the home front, we had a nice meal with the family last night. Mia and Miles had some sparkling fun on the deck.

Today, I decided to salvage 6 very ripe apricots and made some jam. I used a recipe with just apricots, sugar and lemon juice. It is a refrigerator jam.

Hot weather is acomin’! It is going to be in the 90s by the end of the week. I plan to do some marathon dyeing and maybe some discharging.

A Peek in My Window

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Well, sort of! This is my fiber sketch for today. It is from a piece of fabric that was printed and discharged with a plastic grid.

Here is a photo of the next step in my graffiti piece. You will have to wait to see what happens next!!

It was a gorgeous day. I  went to the dentist and got my brand new front tooth It looks great. So happy to have that done. This afternoon, I was off to the Farmer’s Market. I took my knives and sewing scissors to be sharpened. They told me I could bring my rotary cutter blades in and have them sharpened for $2. I think I will give it a try.

Tonight, after dinner, we took Scooter for a walk. I took my camera and took some photos on the Reed Campus. I really love this big old Western Maple. It looks like a tree of life.

And the lines and colors of this tree were just gorgeous.

Don’t forget to check in at the Twelve by Twelve blog tomorrow for the reveal of our latest color play challenge — purple/yellow. I need to get mine ready to go. I am having a CT Scan of my sinuses at 7 am tomorrow.

Mark Making

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

I had one of those days. I was doing household stuff this morning and then spent an ungodly amount of time waiting to see the ENT Dr this afternoon. So, finally, tonight, I made it down to the studio and did some mark making on fabric, my version of graffiti.

I first tried doing some monoprints, but was not getting the results that I wanted. I ended up using one of my veterinarian syringes to get the lines that I was looking for. I have an idea percolating that requires some marks on organza, which is on the right.  I uses a washed dupioni  creamy silk as the undercloth which is on the right. I cut a piece for today’s fiber sketch.

Back to the ENT appointment, once I finally got in, he did some poking and prodding and scoping and decided that I need a CT Scan. I was not doing well today as I had an allergy flareup, but it was good that he could see that it is a problem for me. Mr C  has been slacking, and so I did some cleaning over the week-end and got into the dust. He told me that I should wear a good dust mask, even when someone else is doing the dusting and vacuuming. Ha!

Tomorrow morning, I go for the fitting of my new front tooth crown. I hope it fits and looks good so that I can be done with visits to the dentist.

Only one more day until we reveal our latest Twelve by  Twelve pieces with the complements of purple and yellow. I really love what I did and can’t wait to show it.
