Good Day Monday!

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

It was a beautiful Oregon summer day. I tore out the old lettuce and cilantro which had seen better days. I planted new lettuce and spinach starts. I got myself cleaned up and went to the post office to mail Jane’s book to Brooke in Montana. Then, I picked up my friend Reva and we met up with Beth and Terry at the Oregon College of Arts and Craft for lunch at their wonderful cafe which makes great home style lunch fare. We had hoped to see the exhibit in the gallery, but they were installing a new show today. We had a great time sitting in the sun and talking.

I dropped Reva at home and picked up Mr C and we drove out to our local mall and did some shopping for our trip back east. I found some great deals (40, 50 and 60% off). We stopped at the big box pet store and stocked up on goodies for Scooter to enjoy while we are gone.

I finally made it into the studio tonight and made another black/red study for the Sketchbook Project.

I also started the satin stitching on the aspens. It is boring and tedious, but I turn the tv up nice and loud and stitch away!

It was a great day. Hope you had one, too.

Tempus Fugit

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

I can’t believe that it is August and that I only have a few days before leaving for a trip back home to New York State. For some reason, I seem to be moving in slow motion. But at least I am not in panic mode. I should be if I am going to meet all my entry deadlines for this fall.

I made this black, red and white study from a paint rag, some painted organza and fused black cotton.

I did get my studio back in order which makes working there more enjoyable. I fused down the aspen trunks and need to get them stitched and add the lutradur leaves. I like their wonkiness.

On Friday M & M came over and spent the night. They are at an age where they tend to entertain themselves. I enjoy having a conversation with them and listening to the two of them banter. They are both intelligent and witty, if I do say so myself!

My lettuce has gone to seed and so I am pulling it out and planting new. I went to the garden shop and bought some lettuce starts so that I don’t have to wait too long. I have become addicted to grabbing fresh lettuce from the garden.

Catch-up Day

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Sometimes, I like to challenge myself to make a composition in 5 minutes. I reach into my fused scraps, grab piece of fabric and just do it. I don’t want to over think it. So, feeling a bit worn out tonight, I did this quicky fiber sketch.

This morning, I overslept a bit and then the game was on because I had a guild committee meeting here at 10 am. I did a bunch of errands, three loads of laundry, packed up the t-shirts to send them to New York and then did the farmer’s market run.

I always feel exhausted around dinner time. Then, I head down to my office and studio and have a burst of energy and often get some of my best work done. Today, on Face Book, I posted: A woman’s work is never done…especially if she takes time out to make art. I find that on many days, I get caught up in the day to day stuff and the evenings are my only uninterrupted time to create.

I have been cutting leaves from the lutradur. I love the color variation and the texture of the medium.

I want to say how very much I have enjoyed reading every single comment that has been left. I really am overwhelmed. Tomorrow night, I will do the random number generator and post the winner.

Wow!!

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

As of 10:30 tonight, 95 people have left a comment, hoping to win Jane’s book. It was so much fun reading all of your comments today. On Friday, I will use a random number generator to announce the winner. So if you are just reading my blog today, you still have time to leave a comment on yesterday’s blog for a chance to win Jane Dunnewold’s new book, Art Cloth.

I was so tired after dinner tonight that I thought I could not possibly do a fiber sketch. I printed out my leaf templates on freezer paper and played some solitaire on the computer. I went into the studio to iron the freezer paper to the painted lutradur and I suddenly wanted to use some of the lutradur for a sketch. I titled it summer. By the way, I cut out some leaves and the lutradur is going to be perfect.

This morning, I washed out the dyeing that I did yesterday. Got some great results with the t-shirts. The fabric was less than spectacular.

I used a cool black dye for this shirt – you can see the blues that have shown up.

For several of the shirts, I used chocolate brown and teal — I really like this combo.

Here is another version of the teal and brown for Mia.

This is some cheese cloth that got dunked in the black dye. I like this.

This is another piece done with teal and chocolate brown. I think this will bee really cool for discharging.

I love this wacky piece. I hung the fabric on the clothes line and poured various leftover dyes on to the fabric ala Robbi Eklow. I love a piece of fabric like this that can be cut up and used in compositions. There are many fabulous elements to this.

Joining  me in the studio was my faithful assistant, Scooter. He remains calm, cool and collected through it all.

Migraine Pain

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

For two days, I have been suffering with an intense debilitating headache. Via phone consultations between the ENT and primary care advice nurses, the prognosis is a migraine. I have not had one in ages. I used to have them back in the day. I have barely been able to function except to do what I have to do. I am not a wimp. I have a high threshold for pain, and it is hard to keep me down. So, I have kept plugging along, walking Scooter and doing the cooking, but that is about it. This afternoon, I did an ice pack on my head and it felt better. I even felt like eating dinner. It tasted pretty good.

So, I ventured back down to my studio and decided to do a fiber sketch of what a migraine might look like. It hurts my head to look at it so I may have succeeded!

I also printed some aspen leaves on organza and cut them out. I pinned them to the trees. I am not sure this is going to work. I think I will try lutradur next. I really am not happy with the colors, so I need to work on that.

I was happy to get notification today that I have two pieces juried into Blurred Boundaries, a show that is focusing on work with surface design, this year. The show takes place at the Fabrications Retreat in Michigan at the end of August. The two pieces selected are Indigo Construction and Scorched Earth.

My duh moment will be something nice for one of my readers. I apparently ordered Jane Dunnewold’s new book, Art Cloth, three times. I ordered it from her website and from Amazon, which I cancelled after I realized I could order it directly from Jane. This week, I received a copy from Interweave, the publisher. I must have pre-ordered it from them. So, some time in the next week, when I feel better, I will have a chance for someone to receive my second copy. Stay tuned.

Hope I am feeling better tomorrow. I have Dr. appointment in the afternoon as a back-up.
