Studio Time

redorganzacollage

I gave up on the painted batting that just didn’t work. I used gray felt for the batting which was perfect. The gray felt is covered with gray organza squares. I started tearing my organza pieces to collage, but the plain gray areas were not working for me so I took a deep breath and painted some marks with black paint.

It is drying and hopefully, this will work. At any rate, I am having fun, again.

I also did a test swatch of cotton stitched to pre-felt and then shrunk in the washer and dryer.  Not thrilled with this. I think that silk works better.

We had a nice father’s day family time yesterday. I made oven fried chicken, roasted potatoes, asparagus and a couple of salads. Stephanie made the annual strawberry shortcake for Mr. C. She bakes the best biscuits.

I am finally feeling rested and able to get caught up on every thing that I have been neglecting. My mojo has returned!!

Really Orange

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

We are leaving for New York two weeks from today. In that time, I need to get three pieces finished — all small. Two are gifts and I probably won’t post much about them. The third is our last colorplay quilt for Twelve by Twelve. Terry chose orange. She gave us specific directions about the orange — “I want to see a strong, saturated orange ranging anywhere from cheddar to flame, but pure and unadulterated.”

I have some commercial batik oranges, but not much else. I decided that I wanted to play with this a bit so I went out to Art Media to pick up some orange Dynaflow. I also replenished by yellow and scarlet.

I grabbed some raw silk for the texture and a piece of shantung organza, which also has nice texture. I wet the fabric and painted with shades of orange with some yellow.

I hung it out to dry. The joists for the new deck make a great place for me to have a clothesline!

Tonight, I ironed them and had fun adding black markings. I used a tiny paint brush, a pipette, a chop stick, a syringe and a string.

This is the organza piece.

This is probably the last I will show you this as I create my imagined composition out of this fabric.

This little piece is going to a new home:

For a hanger, I found this in the belt making section of Mill Ends and stitched it to the back.

It is nice to have a few days o feeling great and time to be creative.

Here I Am!

Monday, October 11th, 2010

I stitched all week-end and finally realized that I was totally crazy to think I could finish this by today! I have so enjoyed the sitting and stitching. I will take this to California with me this week and continue stitching and hope to enter it in another show later this year.

I ran out of the perfect Valdani embroidery thread and couldn’t find a local store that carries it so I ended up with another brand that has a slightly different colorway, but I think it is blending nicely.

Lisa drove back here last night and since her flight wasn’t until tonight, I got to spend the day with her. She is in a show at Flora, here in Portland, so we went down to check it out since she missed the opening on Friday night.

Here are some pretty photos I took at the store which has lots of natural elements.

Lisa’s friend, Trish, met us there and then took us to a nice little Vegan restaurant in the Pearl. I had a delicious bowl of chili and a Marionberry lemonade.

After some shopping and roaming around town, we picked up Stephanie and went to M & M’s school to surprise them. They love their Aunt Lisa.

The kids showed us their crazy bands (colorful rubberband shapes) while we had an after school snack of edamame.

Here are Lisa and Mia checking out photos on her camera.

All of a sudden we realized that Lisa needed to get her bags and get to the airport. Fortunately, the airport was pretty quiet and she made her flight because we were a bit behind schedule.

I need to get moving and finish packing up. We are leaving for California in the morning. I am going to be at PIQF on Thursday so let me know if you are going to be there. Our High Fiber Diet show, Bird’s Eye View, will be there.

The Long Week-end

Monday, July 5th, 2010

Since I am retired,  I sometimes lose track of what day it is. This past week-end intensified that. It has been too long. I managed to get some studio work done. I painted more organza and some silk for a background.

I wasn’t sure what to do for a background for this next piece, but I auditioned the painted silk and I quite like it.

I stitched up some more pojagi pockets from the newly painted organza. I used a bit more red.

I also did a little landscape for my sketchbook.

On the home front, we had a nice meal with the family last night. Mia and Miles had some sparkling fun on the deck.

Today, I decided to salvage 6 very ripe apricots and made some jam. I used a recipe with just apricots, sugar and lemon juice. It is a refrigerator jam.

Hot weather is acomin’! It is going to be in the 90s by the end of the week. I plan to do some marathon dyeing and maybe some discharging.

Mark Making Part 2

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

First, I want to say thanks for all the really nice comments about my sunset piece. While I was working on it I thought of other possibilities for the technique. I wanted to see what would happen if I just made marks on organza and cut it up and reassembled it. So that is what is going on here. The marks I made the other day got a splatter of red, as you can see. I sewed the little pockets and have done a preliminary arrangement on a white background. It has a grid pattern. I need to get a solid color. I like the way the lines and dots play. I will paint some more tomorrow.

Here is my latest fiber sketch. I used a few of the leftover purple/yellow pieces.

Mr C is redoing the irrigation in our front yard. Scooter likes hang out an supervise. The original irrigation was metal pipes probably installed back in the 50s. It is nice and rusty so I am hanging on to a few pieces to do some rusty shibori.
