Reflecting and Anticipating

Saturday, December 31st, 2011

I saw this post on Facebook and thought it would be a good thing for me to do:

Take the time today, on the last day of 2011, to write down what you accomplished. Don’t reflect on what you didn’t do – focus on the good. Make it happen next year if you didn’t accomplish all you wanted. No excuses!

I had some heartbreaks last year — the two invasive burglaries and the cancellation of our trip to Japan. All happened in the first few months, and in some ways, informed how I handled the year, creatively. I went back over my blog posts, and see that I was sick too often, which was part of the whole depression that I was feeling. It was also enlightening to see the positive things during the past year. Here are my highlights:

Did lots of experimental work. I did new things like felting, more hand stitching, made more of the organza pocket pieces.

Twelve book published. The Twelve by Twelve group successfully published our book about the project and it received lots of great reviews.

My Daughters’ accomplishments. I have reveled in the successes of my two daughters. Their work will continue to grow and inspire in the next year.

Trip to Southern California. Mr C and I enjoyed a road trip to California in May, culminating in a trip to the Disney Theater in LA, which I enjoyed, immensely. The trip was rife with lots of creative inspiration.

Artistic Accomplishments: Klee’s Castles sold for $350 in the SAQA auction. I had quilts accepted into venues where I had previously not had success: Art Quilts Lowell, La Conner Quiltfest, and a SAQA juried show, Layers of Meaning. I also had work accepted into local High Fiber Diet and  SAQA Oregon shows. My work was also seen in the PAQA South show and the Chandler’s Art Quilts Year XVI: Something to Say. Not too bad, really!!

New York Trip We enjoyed a short, but sweet visit to NYC and then a grand time with my family as we celebrated the wedding of my niece, Becky, in upstate New York.

New Deck Our new deck, designed by my son in law and built by my son is a welcome addition to our comfort and the beauty of our home. We really love it.

Cataract Surgery I can see! I can see! This has been a highlight — I had no idea how much the cataracts had influenced my color sight. I love spending much of the day without glasses at all.

Twelve off to Houston The trip to Houston IQF with 8 of the Twelve group and all 288 of our quilts has to be the highlight of the year for me — on so many levels. Meeting many of the twelves for the first time, meeting many online friends in person, hearing the accolades for the work we had done — it was all so lovely.

Thanksgiving and Core Family Time I know now why my MIL and my mom cherished the times with all the kids and grandkids. These get-togethers and visits were high points in my year.  And knowing that their will be a new grandchild in March is just frosting on this cake.

It is nice to put the year in the proper perspective. 2012 is a clean slate. I am wondering where it will take this grateful old lady!!

Not MIA

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

I have not been inclined to blog about anything. I have been busy catching up on SDA work and other stuff. I can’t believe it is Wednesday. I did finish piecing Gwen’s Disappearing Nine Patch blocks. I need to run to the fabric store and get something for borders so that I can finish it.

So, I thought I would post a few inspirational photos from our week-end at the beach. That is a mushroom up there.

This rock looks like paint has been dripped over it, but the white is part of the rock.

And of course, a very contented Scooter.

I promise something more interesting, soon!!

This and That, Again

Monday, November 14th, 2011

So many things going on and thankfully, I am fighting back against a sinus infection. I was down most of the week-end with a horrible sinus headache. I am doing all the none antibiotic things I can, and it is working. Woo hoo. I had a very busy day catching up with stuff.

I went out yesterday and bought the lovely yarn up there. It is a merino wool/bamboo combo that is machine washable. I am making a sweater for the new baby. I wanted to do that green color, but couldn’t find the right yarn so that will have to wait. I love this heathery robin’s egg blue.

My new camera arrived today. When my brand new Nikon 3100 was stolen last spring, I didn’t get a new one because it was quite expensive and I thought I could get along with a cheaper camera for a bit so I bought a used Canon Rebel. I have had so much trouble photographing my quilts. I found a used Nikon 3100 for almost half the price of a new one plus they are buying my Rebel. It turned out to be a good deal. I used it for photos tonight, and I am so happy.

I had a lot of SDA work to do today, but I managed to sew 16 more disappearing nine patch blocks for Gwen’s quilt.

The Oregon art professor who led our critique session a few weeks ago, recommended the book Making Art by Terry Barrett. It is a college text and was quite expensive, so I hope to put it to good use!

I took these two photos with my iPhone on our walk this morning. We still have some great color, but the rain has arrived and so the leaves are falling. Can you see Mr C and Scooter in these photos?

My Ninepatch Disappeared

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

I have heard the term disappearing nine patch going around on blogs and Facebook. I needed a pattern for a kid’s quilt and thought I would give it a try. So, this is how the nine patch disappears (in case you are wondering).

You start with nine 5 inch squares which are sewn into a nine patch,

Then you cut it in half lengthwise and crosswise.

Then arrange your smaller squares into a quilt!! And that is how the nine patch disappears. You can see how I have rearranged them in the top photo. Of, course, I have lots of blocks to sew, now.

I had a nice day today. I drove over the river and up the hills to Terry’s home. I had not had a chance to see her new studio, yet. They have built a separate building on their property for her studio and a greenhouse for her husband. It is really nice and much bigger than I expected. We went out for delicious Indian food.

Tonight while I watched the Project Runway train wreck, I prepared some scarves for indigo dyeing. I bought some cotton scarves and will be interested to see how they come out.

Not sure when I will get them in the indigo pot. Tomorrow, I am going to make some Beef Bourguignon for Saturday night dinner. It is better the second day and on Saturday, I will be in Eugene all day with Terry and some other artists for our biannual critique session. The dinner party is for Steph’s mother-in -law who is visiting from North Carolina. I hope I can pull it off.

Mindless Studio Time

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

Today was spent getting my studio back in order after a month of projects. It always feels good to put every thing in its place and find the surfaces of my work areas.

I washed the fabrics for my niece, Gwen’s, quilt and ironed them and started cutting tonight. I am going to do a disappearing nine patch. It should move along quite quickly once I get my 5 inch squares cut.

Once in a while, I like to do pieced patchwork quilts. I find it very meditative to cut and stitch and press and do it all over again.

I think I am too excited about going to Houston next week to start anything that needs my brain. If you will be at IQF, I hope you will stop by to say hello. Here is your official invitation:
