A Little of This, A Little of That

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

It has been one of those days. I managed to get a lot done, but it was a fractured day. I started out by washing out my dyed fabric. I have some mixed results with some of the browns. I used a new dye called mink which has a very reddish tone. I like it, but not exactly what I was looking for. I will try the hot cocoa or chocolate next time. I also did not do the greatest job mixing my dyes so I may have to do some over-dyeing. The Pimatex fabric is really great. I love the quality of the fabric, and it takes the dye very well. Thanks, Lisa, for turning me on to this fabric.

I am in love with the ecru on the left. It is the one perfect piece that I needed.

This is Robin’s Egg Blue. It is not as strong a turquoise and I love it, love it.

I got myself cleaned up and went to geezer day at New Season’s Market and stopped by Trader Joe’s for some necessities. When I arrived home, I found some great mail. I bought 3 items from the SDA auction and they arrived today.

This is a piece by Rayna, I love the colors in this. I love how she uses text as a design element.

I love the enchanting work done by Natalya Aikens. So, I was thrilled to win this little piece. Her pieces are best appreciated in person so that you can see the wonderful stitching and handmade beads. This is layers of tulle cut in different shapes producing this lovely image. It is titled: Сумерки/Sumerki/Dusk. You can see a better photo of it on her blog.

My third purchase is this amazing book on felting. I hope to do some of the projects after I finish my current project.

I frittered away some time, ironing fabric and photographing my goodies and finally I got around to quilting the Sunrise piece. I have to head out tomorrow to get some thread for the water. I don’t have anything that works.

Second Thursday

Friday, October 10th, 2008

STASH stands for second Thursday at someone’s house. Sometimes, we actually meet then! Yesterday, we met at Gale’s new home. She has moved back from Astoria on the coast. She has a serious medical condition that requires drug infusions here in Portland. We are so happy to have her back in the hood!! Her home is perfect for a wheel-chair — one floor — with easy access to her beautiful backyard.

The group treated me to a really lovely birthday gift. This book of photographs of creches from all over the world. I love it.

Terry gave me this lovely lily and Gale gave me some roses from her new backyard.

I finally got around to giving Reva her gift from the APNQ show. She couldn’t go with us so I promised her a pressie. It was a half yard of this fabric. She said her husband thought it was hysterical.

Gale’s new home is near the Oregon College of Arts and Crafts (OCAC) where there is wonderful cafe. We went there for lunch. I couldn’t resist a photo of this fence in the parking lot. I don’t know about you, but I see quilt!!

I have to run; I have crit group in an hour and I am not even dressed.

This and That and Queen for the Week-end

Want to see something scary?

Meet Kirstin, Mia’s American Girl Doll. Steph found her at a yard sale a couple of years ago and she has been loved almost to death!! She recently suffered a serious accident and lost an arm. So today, I boxed her up and sent her to Chicago to the American Girl Doll Hospital. She will return with her arm reattached, wearing a hospital gown and bracelet with a get well balloon. It should take about 2 weeks. This is what Grandmas do!!

We were blessed with some nice warm days for the past week and today it is raining. My urban garden is thriving. I think I will be harvesting some lettuce, soon.

October 12th is my 70th birthday, but, this week-end, I am being whisked away to a luxury mountain house near Mt. Hood so that I get to spend a long week-end with my core family. This was my greatest wish for my birthday. We will hike, play games, eat, drink and be merry. Oh, yes, Miles told me he is bringing a jigsaw puzzle. We love to do puzzles. I do not have to do any cooking!

There is wifi so perhaps I will share some of the frivolity with you. Lisa arrives in the morning, without Wilfredo. It was too expensive to include him. Mark and Jayme are arriving tomorrow night. Needless to say, I am excited!!

Let’s Go Shopping!!

This is a scarf that I donated to the Surface Design Auction that started today. If you would like to bid on this or several other lovely items, click here. This scarf was dyed and discharged to create the circles. I then foiled with gold, using bubble wrap.

Here is another opportunity. Lisa’s friend, Diana Fayt, is participating with 26 other ceramic artists for a fundraising sale for Obama. For more information, click here. The sale starts October 15th. The actual pieces will go online on October 13th. I will remind you. To see Diana’s fabulous work, click here.

I sort of took the day off today. Mr C and I spent some time and money at Costco this  morning. I took  my power walk in the afternoon. I cooked a somewhat labor intensive beef/mushroom/brown rice stew for dinner. It was nice to just be. Tomorrow, I will be attacking the studio. You know that every time I have a frenzy of work, it must be followed up with lots of clean-up and reorganizing. I shall now go indulge myself with Project Runway. I just love that show.

I Loved This Man

Saturday, September 27th, 2008

Next to Mr C, Paul Newman has to be the one guy who could make my heart go pitter patter.

Here is the young hunk next to the older, ill, but still handsome, Paul. He was a true renaissance man — great actor, a kitchen guru, an entrepreneur, race car driver, liberal do-gooder, consummate and devoted husband and father.

The world has lost a great man with the most beautiful blue eyes. Rest in Peace…

I enjoyed the debate between Cranky and Cool, last night. I am biased, but I think Obama won this one. My son, Mark, and Jayme had a debate party/fundraiser last night. I think they all got a little tipsy playing a drinking game based on certain words or phrases by McCain!! I am so proud of them. This morning, they headed off to Reno, Nevada to campaign for Obama.

I have been having so much fun working on my Shelter #2. Even Mr C likes this one. I will explain the whole story soon. Today is Steph and Jack’s anniversary so we are going to go out to dinner with them and M & M.

Just want to say that we are having gorgeous fall weather. Hope it holds for next week-end — another story to be told.
