Thursday This and That

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

Today was a beautiful day in Portland. Terry, June and I had an art date. We went to the Interstate Firehouse Community Center to check out the Columbia Stitchery Guild Show. Terry and I both had two pieces in the show. It was hung very nicely, but the lighting was atrocious. June explained that the lighting was for canvases and so the spots slanting down just made a glare in the center and shadows around the edges. Most of the quilts had droops and bulges because of the hanging.

I took some photos of my favorite quilts. These are clickable to see it larger.

The third quilt is Terry’s. The fourth quilt is a painted canvas background with Perle cotton stitching in lots of areas. The last two quilts are done by the same person, Bonnie Buchman. I love her work.

We then proceeded to Alberta Street for lunch and to check out some of the shops. We had lunch at a Southern sort of New Orleans restaurant and had pulled pork sandwiches and shared some bread pudding and a lemon tart. We dined al fresco and it was wonderful.

We stopped in at Bolt – a really nice fabric shop and Terry and I each picked up some fabric. At the Latin Arts store, I couldn’t resist this purse from Peru.

Here is my thread doodle for the day. Don’t look too closely at that stitching. I did it after dinner and a couple of glasses of wine.

Tomorrow, Mr C and I are heading to Eugene. Sonji Hunt has a show opening at the Maude Kerns Art Center, titled Geometrics. We are also going to spend some time with Kristin’s mom and step-dad who live in Eugene. It should be a good time.

I am supposed to have wifi in the hotel so I will check in from there and perhaps some photos with the superfantastic Sonji.

Wheeeee!

I awoke this morning without a fever and feeling pretty darn good. That is the good thing about having the crappy virus — how great you feel when it is gone.

Yesterday, I ventured out to buy a swivel, towel stand to display my scarves at the Artist’s Among Us show and sale at the cathedral this week-end. I finally found what I wanted at Linens and Things. I stopped at Trader Joe’s to stock up on some food, came home and collapsed, again.

This morning, Mr C and I took it down to the cathedral and set up my area for the show. Here are my scarves. I think they are quite lovely!

Here is my display. I didn’t have time to make new quilts so I am showing some of my older work. All of my new work is going in to other shows.

After finishing this set-up, we stopped at the paint store to pick out stain for the fence. I walked the dog a couple of times — short walks and did some clean up in the studio.

I received the first photos for the Virtual Iraq War Protest. You can see them here. For one of my photos, I added the sticker to my Eighth Deadly Sin Art Quilt.

I am so proud of my daughters. Stephanie flew off to San Francisco to spend the week-end with Lisa. They will be hanging and setting up their joint show at Doe. They have put together an amazing show of art and craft, titled Lovely, Dark and Deep. You can see Steph’s work here and Lisa’s work here. A few of the pieces are a collaboration. Tomorrow night is their opening from 7 – 10. If you are in or around San Francisco, stop by and say hi! I love you, Steph and Lili!!

Last night, I finished Viola’s Garden so that Stephanie could take it with her. She will be seeing Viola and her mom and dad on Sunday. Here it is:

In the borders, I quilted some garden critters and flora.

Today, I had an appointment at Nordstrom to be fitted for new bras and a new prosthesis. I was two inches smaller around my chest than I was two years ago – that was surprising! I feel so perky with my new boob and bras.

I did some shopping for M & M. I bought Mia a shirt and skirt to go with the vest that I knitted her. I picked them both up from school and I wanted to take a photo of her in the outfit, but before I knew it, her Dad was here to pick them up. If she wears the outfit to school tomorrow, I can get a photo. I hope.

I have an art show and sale at the Cathedral and a fiber show at a gallery with Columbia Stitchery Guild coming up this month. I have to get busy and finish up some pieces and make some small items for sale in art bins and in the gallery shop. Tomorrow, Miles is out of school at 12:30 so I won’t get much done after lunch. I am going to work on some silk scarves in the morning, do some soy wax batik and some shibori.

VIRTUAL END THE WAR IN IRAQ PROTEST: endthiswar.jpg Thank you to everyone who sent me their address for a bumper sticker. I do not want any postage for this. I just want you to send me a photo for my virtual protest on Flickr. I have more bumper stickers so don’t be shy! I need many more photos if this is going to be a successful protest!! Use the contact form at the top of the page. The contact form goes only to my e-mail. No one else has access to your addresses. So please, please join us!

What a gorgeous day it was. Sunny, breezy and my nose was runny, sneezy! Have you heard that the pollen in our air is increasing due to global warming. In some areas like, Atlanta, the pollen count has been 26 times normal. Thank goodness for modern day remedies.

Today, STASH (Some Thursday at Someones House), was here. We had a great show and tell and a wonderful discussion of Twyla Tharp’s book on creativity. We are only on chapter 2. It was Terry’s birthday. Here she is with her new polka dot piece and other red adornments. Can you tell that she loves any shade of red? It looks great on her, don’t you think? You can get a sneak peak at the polka dot piece.

Beth had to leave early, but the rest of us went to Papa Haydn’s for lunch, to celebrate birthdays, because they have the best dessert menu — a list of about 20 delectable treats. I ordered the Boccone Dolce — Swiss meringues drizzled with semi-sweet chocolate, layered with fresh fruit and chantilly cream.

Here are Reva, Linda, Gale and Terry, with empty dessert plates. I forgot to get photos of the desserts. You can see that we dined al fresco.

Tonight, Mr C and I attended the Cathedral Maundy Thursday Agape meal and the very moving service after. The meal was Mediterranean — lentils, couscous, humus, pita, feta veggie salad and Baklava.

I have a lot of things to get caught up on. Where shall I start?

First: It was a perfectly beautiful day in our neighborhood. Lots of sunshine and a no fleece kind of day. I walked almost 11,000 steps and did 74 minutes of aerobic walking.

Food Stamp Diet: Someone left a link to Hillbilly Housewife in the comments. Thought some of you might be interested in checking out this site. There is an Emergency $45 menu for a family. There is a shopping list and recipes. So, I will be going back here if and when we decide to embark on this program.

This Day in the Life: I took part in the national diary day for working women on Tuesday. I was not sure that they would want me, but when I said that I was excited about the possibilities for creativity and work after one retires, they asked me to participate. Here is a link to their website. Thirty of the diaries will be selected for publication in a book next year. The big thing that I noticed is that I did not piddle (a term I got from Karoda’s latest blog post) while I was keeping a journal of my day. I was very focused and got a lot of work done. Hmmm! It was somewhat like being on a retreat or in a workshop where I have others watching how I am spending my time. Maybe I should put up a webcam n my studio and let you all keep track of me!!

Mail call: I did a postcard swap with Beate Knapp from Dusseldorf, Germany. Mine arrived today. I love it.

Robin of Quilt Antics blog lives in Hawaii. I met her at Art Quilt Tahoe. She recently posted about hearing an NPR blurb about the costly mess of plastic grocery bags in the landfill. She showed a shopping bag that she purchased and a knock off that she made. I teased her for the pattern. She not only sent me the pattern, but I also received this awesome Hawaiian shirt fabric to use to make the bag. I plan to make several of these and to stop using plastic bags. Trader Joe’s puts your name in a drawing for free groceries if you bring in your own bags.

The circles and lines piece: This may end up being a quilt by committee. I love hearing all your comments. One major change that I made was to make a new orange section. I used a hand-dye which is more complex and picks up more of the colors in the small circles. I put in some slivers of green, but I used a more toned down hand-dye. With trepidation, I am posting it as it looks on my design wall, now. Nothing is seamed. It is folded and pinned. The gray organza may get cut and I’ll have two sections going horizontally. Don’t know how to test this without cutting it!! Diane wondered what I wanted it to be about. She couldn’t see a focal point. My idea is to get a very simple Asian aesthetic. I was looking at photographs of Japanese gardens where there are rocks and a few plants and the soil or sand is raked. I am a bit worried that the orange is too strong, but sometimes they have a splash of color. I may make that strip much narrower. So here it is:

Last, but not least, Birthday Greetings to Stephanie: Friday is my baby’s birthday. Stephanie, my tall, lanky daughter is in some ways the least like me and in many ways, the most like me of my three children. She is a very private person, a stay at home mom and an accomplished home keeper. She is brilliant and wise. She sometimes makes me feel like the child because she always knows the right thing to say and do, and I often don’t. In that way, she is like her father. When we moved here a year ago, I didn’t know how we would get along. I have tried very hard not to be too involved in her day to day life with her family, and she has done the same for us. I think we have a very comfortable relationship. Being this close to family means so much to me. and I treasure my relationship with her and the time I have with my grandchildren.

Here is a photo of Steph in a hat that she just made. Cool, isn’t it!

Check out this wonderful drawing corner that she made for M & M.

And just look at these stuffed things that she has made:

There will be many more stuffed woodland objects for a show she is doing with Lisa in San Francisco in May. Here is the invite:

Tomorrow night we will go out for Vietnamese food and then birthday cake back at the Barnes’ house. The big question is will I have time to make a cake or will I go to the bakery?

I am so excited because I am getting an eye exam tomorrow and there will soon be new glasses!!
