stitched organza

So, after 6-7 months without an upper respiratory bug, I finally succumbed. Over the week-end, I had scratchy throat, earaches, headache, fever and did nada for two days. Yesterday, I had an SDA staff conference call and then a guild board meeting. That about did me in for the day. This morning, I felt as if the virus had subsided, but I now have inflamed sinuses. So, I have been doing frequent saline rinses and tonight I feel much better. I just have to stay on top of it. I have not had any antibiotics this year so far and I would like to continue that trend.

I was going to do some indigo dyeing on Friday before the consumption over took me, but then I realized I needed to prepare some fabric for dyeing. The piece in the photo is shantung silk organza. I have done some special stitching and tieing which I will reveal after it is dyed.

I bought some more prefelt in white and indigo blue. I want to do another stitched and shrunk piece using indigo fabric.

Today, I entered one quilt in the Quilts=Art=Quilts show in Auburn, NY. I have not entered this show in a while. I was in the show a couple of times way back when. Then the show got known and there was a lot more competition. The show has gotten better and better so this may be an exercise in futility!! I will let you know what I entered after I find out if it got in or not.

I will leave you with a photo that I think might need to become a quilt! Maybe an abstraction!

multiplecomplements

I can’t seem to get back in a productive blogging rhythm — probably because I am not doing anything very creative which is also a problem. I really need to get some work done for upcoming shows and I know that if I get started, I will get in a groove.

I love the table an chairs up there. They were on the sidewalk of a Mexican cafe on Valencia St. where we had dinner one night. They served small plates of delicious food.

Something else I love, this kind of California landscape with sculptural golden hills dotted with live Oaks.

I have been working on this very easy Vogue blouse pattern. I tried it on last night, unfinished, and I need to do some altering.

I did some work in my garden – weeding, pulling out overgrown lettuce and oops!, found these enormous squash that went into the compost.

I have also been diligently stitching the 3×3’s together with beads.

Today, I went on a road trip with my STASH group to McMinnville which is a charming town in the Willamette Valley wine country. Here is a shot of the window with a cool quilt from strips of modern fabric.

Terry and I did some bead shopping at a bead store.

We had a terrific lunch at a French restaurant. This is a selfie I took of Terry and I — ia m in the sun, she is in the shade – I am not really that pale.

Here are Suzy and Reva — you can see that we were having a great time.

I will leave you with this funny, very Portland chain link fence installation which is on the way to the Rhodie Garden.

simplyredquilts

I went to a High Fiber Diet meeting tonight, and many of us turned in quilts to be juried for the Simply Red show. Here is a pile of them in their travel bags. The jurying happens on Saturday. For the first time we have a panel who are not members jurying the show.

Before the meeting some of us met for dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant. I love this cuisine and since they use rice noodles and wrappers it works well for gluten free.

Terry Grant and several others had a Vietnamese Crepe which is made with rice flour and a spice that turns it yellow.

Vietcrepe

I had rice noodles, pork and all those lovely greens to put in rice paper wrappers which are then dipped in the very flavorful sauce. The pink plates each have a wrapper on them.

The very talented Bonnie Bucknam brought some of her handmade books and journals. They are so beautiful.

And that is about it for today. I spent much of today doing SDA Constant Contact e-mails. Tomorrow, I am going to a SAQA meet up at a gallery where Trisha Hassler has an exhibit and is doing an artist talk for us.

Summertime in Portland

deckparty

We are in the midst of beautiful long, sunny days. My favorite time of year! This past week-end, we had a dinner party on the deck. It was the wrap-up celebration for the Artists Among Us team. I made buttermilk rolls and grilled pork tenderloin with corn confetti to make sandwiches. None of which, I could eat (except for the pork), but every one else enjoyed them.

On Sunday afternoon, I hosted an SDA meeting. Everyone brings some food to share. I used the table runner I got in Jerusalem and picked some flowers from the yard.

The Rhodie Garden doesn’t have blooming Rhodies, now, but there are plenty of other summer flowers to enjoy.

This quilt came home from its travels around the US and to the Netherlands. I was so happy to see it. Still love it

I am also happy that Kelp Dance was juried into the Sur(face) Forward exhibit at the Corvallis Art Center. It just arrived home from North Carolina.

I have my simply red quilts ready to turn in for jurying. Here is our new hanging system.

Hanging wire is stapled to the center of the rod. I covered the stapled area with clear duct tape.

HFDrodsystem

Here it is inserted in the rod pocket. You can see that this makes it much easier to hand in those galleries that have a hook for hanging from the center of the art.

I made a muslin bag with French seams for each quilt. A plastic sleeve is sewn to the outside of the bag and has a photo and name of the quilt and my contact info. I blocked out my phone #!

So that is what I have been up to. Busy and enjoying life.

How does your garden grow?

This is my kitchen garden. Before this photo, it was a jungle of overgrown and bitter leaf lettuce. I pulled it out, weeded and planted new leaf lettuce.

These lettuces got to stay:

My tomatoes are a jungle of activity. I should have cut back some suckers earlier, but was too busy.

I have lots of green cherry tomatoes – with our hot weather, they should be red, soon.

We are starting to harvest yellow and zucchini squash.

I had to be out of the house most of the morning because Mr C was spraying some dry wall texture in the basement bathroom. The new plumbing comes through there and so a quite large chunk of the wall had to be replaced. The stuff he sprays on it has a vile odor that lasts a long time.

Hopefully, I can get back down to the studio tomorrow.
