Melancholy

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Well, you knew that my happy high would not last. Got some news today that has me in tears and worrying for someone. Perhaps at some point I can share the details, but, for now, we are in the stages of discovery and coping. Don’t worry about Mr C or I — we are just fine — just sad.

I spent the morning at WW and shopping. I am at an impasse with my diet. I gained over the celebration time and now I just can’t get back with the program and losing. I switched meetings and am happier with the leader and group so I hope I can get motivated. I have to start journaling my food intake again, which I just finished doing. I had a good day.

M & M had no school today and Steph needed to do a Trader Joe’s run so she dropped them off to spend some time with us.

Miles and Mr C found a paper airplane site on the web and started folding.

Mia came down to the studio with me and decorated a t-shirt with T-Juice markers. I forgot to get a photo. I kept working on the Galilee Sunrise.

This is what I did today. For the mountains: the top reddish fabric is one that Jeanne gave me for my birthday. That glowing bit in the center was perfect to be under the sun.

I am covering this with organza to tone it down.

I have this delicious piece of shibori silk that will be the base of the sky. I am covering parts of it with organza to give it that reddish/golden glow.

So here are my fabrics laid out on the cutting table. I think I am making progress. I apologize for the photography. I had to take these photos from overhead the piece is on my cutting table and the light is not that great.

Tomorrow, I am going to the Oregon critque group. We meet twice a year. This time, we are meeting in Eugene, a couple of hours away. Terry is picking me up at 7:30 am. I have my quilts packed and my outfit selected. I am not very good in the early morning. I have to be organized. I guess I better set the alarm, too.

A Good Mail Day

Since yesterday was a holiday for the USPS, I received a pile of birthday cards today. Amongst them was this delicious post card created by my good friend Karoda. This is so beautiful with text, paint, handstitching, yum! Thanks!

And this arrived from Hawaii from my virtual quilt daughter, Kristin. Isn’t this the cutest pin cushion? Thank you!!

It is sitting on a pile of books in my studio. I am going to take these to Powell’s book store to see what I can get for them. I am in the midst of rearranging my studio. I am liking the new arrangement, but it is taking me forever to get it done. I hope to get it in order to start some creating tomorrow afternoon.

Remember this scary site?

Well, look at who showed up on the UPS truck today. She looks like a brand new doll. She had her hair done and got a cleaning plus getting her new arm. She is wearing a hospital gown and wristband and is carrying a get well balloon. How cute is that? Miss Mia is coming after school tomorrow to take her home. Mission accomplished!

My Birthday Week-end Part 1

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

Just a quick check in. We are having rain and rainbows. I love rainbows so that is perfect. Here is the house where we are staying. It is very modern and has lots of room and 4.5 bathrooms.

We got the puzzle going today.

This afternoon we went apple picking.

My batteries went dead so I didn’t get any more photos at the orchard.

Tonight, all 3 of my children prepared a delicious dinner for me — salad, a wonderful rice and veggie dish, roast chicken, roasted vegetables and a delicious apple tart with ice cream and caramel sauce. I should have taken a photo. Here is Miles enjoying every bite.

Lisa gifted me with this amazing painting from a photo of me when I was about 15. Isn’t it wonderful?

If you would like to see more photos, please check my Flickr Set: My 70th Birthday.

Here is one of the rainbows.

This and That and Queen for the Week-end

Want to see something scary?

Meet Kirstin, Mia’s American Girl Doll. Steph found her at a yard sale a couple of years ago and she has been loved almost to death!! She recently suffered a serious accident and lost an arm. So today, I boxed her up and sent her to Chicago to the American Girl Doll Hospital. She will return with her arm reattached, wearing a hospital gown and bracelet with a get well balloon. It should take about 2 weeks. This is what Grandmas do!!

We were blessed with some nice warm days for the past week and today it is raining. My urban garden is thriving. I think I will be harvesting some lettuce, soon.

October 12th is my 70th birthday, but, this week-end, I am being whisked away to a luxury mountain house near Mt. Hood so that I get to spend a long week-end with my core family. This was my greatest wish for my birthday. We will hike, play games, eat, drink and be merry. Oh, yes, Miles told me he is bringing a jigsaw puzzle. We love to do puzzles. I do not have to do any cooking!

There is wifi so perhaps I will share some of the frivolity with you. Lisa arrives in the morning, without Wilfredo. It was too expensive to include him. Mark and Jayme are arriving tomorrow night. Needless to say, I am excited!!

Putting Down Roots

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

The day dawned, very gloomy and overcast. Miles was up until after 10 pm so he slept in. Mia caught a cold from her first week back in the germ incubator, known as elementary school. She woke up about 3 am with a sore throat and very runny nose.

After breakfast we decided to go to the garden store to pick up some plants for the farm. We drove out to Al’s in Gresham, sort of country roads, and then Mia got car sick on top of the sniffles. We picked out some plants and headed home. Mia spent the day on the sofa with a box of tissues, ice water, chicken soup and Jr. Motrin — watching the food channel, she loves it. She seems better tonight.

Mr C took Milo out to the Model Train store. I think they are cooking up some plans.

I was able to get some herbs, vegetable starts and some seeds planted down on the farm.

Mr C started adding the bubblers to the drip irrigation.

I have herbs in one bed, veggies in the largest and will have cutting flowers in the third. For now, I planted some asters and mums.

I planted spinach, kale, chard, shallots, cabbage, romaine, brussels sprouts and broccoli. From seeds, I planted arugala, (I know, I am so elitist), chard and radishes.

I haven’t planted a winter garden in a while so we shall see what happens. Gardening is good exercise. I was feeling it tonight.
