Monday Musings

Monday, June 25th, 2007

I am so jinxed! On Friday, I told Terry and June that I was over my sinus/allergy problems for the season. Ha! I awoke on Sunday with a major attack. I had vertigo so bad that I had to leave church early and come home and take to my bed. With the help of some Sudafed and Aleve, I muddled through the day. I called the Dr’s office this morning because I still had a serious case of vertigo and a raging head-ache. I spent 2 hours there and saw a really cute resident. He convinced me that I need to work on a more holistic way of handling my allergies, and so I am now doing the saline rinses 2 or 3 times a day and using a steroid as well as Afrin inhalers. I do feel better tonight.

I really did have a great Saturday, and I am trying to think what triggered the attack. It was Eastmoreland Garage Sale day. The Barnes’ family arrived early to head out and look for bargains. We followed a little later with Maggie in tow. We never did catch up with them. I found some great books and toys for M & M. I had promised Mia that I would look for some Nancy Drew books and I found a few. She is currently reading the Chronicles of Narnia.

I found some beautiful vintage napkins; one set is beige linen. I found an interesting cheese slicer which I intend to use for printing fabric with soy wax for batiking. I want to do some rubbings on fabric with the brass Asian symbol.

We came home at lunch time and found the rest of the family here doing the same thing. Steph and Jack wanted to go back out and shop some more so we hung out with M & M. Mia found these great lime green sparkly shoes:

Miles was ecstatic with his find — a step ladder!

Have stepladder, will travel:

He also had to give Mr C a hand fixing a sprinkler:

By the time their Mom and Dad came to retrieve them, they were quite tired out. I think Mia looks like she is posing for Andrew Wyeth:

Global Warming Comes to Our House…

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

This morning when I was eating breakfast, I noticed that my yogurt was sort of lukewarm. I asked Mr C if his milk was warm. Yep! I got up and went to the fridge and took note that it felt quite warm for a refrigerator. I checked the freezer and it was hunky dory – everything was nice and frozen. Hmmm, what is going on. My first thought was that the lights were not going off. Checked that out – nope. I put a thermometer on the top shelf and it registered 72°, the same as the room temperature. This is not good,

Now, I am afraid to eat anything coming from the fridge, but I had already finished my yogurt and raspberries. Mr C got on the phone with a repairman — they can’t come until Monday. June and Terry are arriving soon so I must leave the fridge problem and get on with my whirlwind day.

We had a great critique session. They each had two pieces so I felt like a slacker! This exercise, which we try to do monthly, has been a very enriching experience for me. I feel as if I have learned so much from Terry and June. After critique and some gossiping, we were off to have lunch and more gossiping and commiserating about our relationships with our progeny.

I walked home from lunch — about mile and a half and found Steph and M & M waiting for me — yeah — nice surprise. Steph wanted to do some errands sans children. While M & M played with their scooters in the front yard. I cooked up some chicken that I bought last night, hoping to salvage it. I began throwing out suspect stuff and took food to the garage fridge that can survive a few hours in warm temps without going bad — I hope. Of course, I should have done all this in the morning, oh well — C’est la vie!

Milo became more enthralled with the buttons and mechanisms on the scooter that make it fold up and move the mar up and down than with scooting.

Mia, however, was sailing around the neighborhood.

She stopped for a refreshing glass of ice water.

miahelmet.jpg

She set the glass on the porch and Maggie promptly picked it up and carried it off and drank the water and enjoyed the ice cubes. We had never seen her do anything like this before.

I took Kristin’s advise and attempted to enlist M & M’s help sorting my fused fabric scraps by color. This did not last long. But they found other ways to amuse themselves while I did the sorting. Here is my scrap rainbow. This is only the start of my sorting.

Steph and Jack showed up around 5ish and we all went out to dinner at Sticker’s, the Asian restaurant near us that has a great medley of Asian food. I had chicken pot stickers and Vietnamese salad rolls.

Despite the global warming, it has been a very nice day.

Week-end Doings

Sunday, June 10th, 2007

Checking in from rainy, cool Portland. Summer is taking her time arriving. We get a taste of sun and warmth and “poof”, it is over. I think we have at least one more day of drizzle.

Yesterday, we had an artist’s tea at the gallery where the textile show is up. Several of us did demos of some of our techniques. Terry was on a panel that discussed the whys and hows of what we do. I prepared a postcard of a sunflower using silk scraps; I showed 3 different stages. Here is my display:

Here are the postcards, clickable to see larger.

I actual had attendees who had never seen a fiber postcard!

When I got home, it was rainy and with nothing else to do, Mr C and I went to Macy’s to buy new bathroom towels because there was a sale. I couldn’t resist this, which was on the sale table.

Today, we had the pleasure of attending M & M’s drama class presentation. The play was written by the kids in the class. The title was “Alice in Idaho.” Mia is totally into Alice in Wonderland and Miles wanted to have cowboys so Alice ended up in Idaho where the cowboys live. Don’t you just love it? Here are some photos, to see more go to my Flickr site.

For those who wondered about the edge finish for the cruciform quilt, I will do a tutorial later this week. Now, for the Soprano’s finale.

Something Creative, finally!

I have been participating in a Round Robin Collage. Most of the work has been a single piece with a build up of techniques and stuff as it moves around the group. A coupe of participants have chosen to do books and so you get to do your own completed collage on the pages. I worked on one this week-end and used my new Joss papers, some cut up kimono fabrics, some coins, some stamps and an envelope with fortune cookie sayings inserted.

rrbookcollage.jpg

Here is a close-up of the envelope with the fortune cookie sayings. An Asian coin is attached to the envelope with glossy gel medium.

Here are two other close-ups:

I had lots of fun doing this, and it has inspired me to get back to doing more collage works with my antique Kimono fabrics.

I just received a phone call from the dermatology office with sort of good news. I have basal cell skin cancer – the slow growing type, but it is not melanoma – yeah. I go in next Tuesday to have it removed.

I had a very busy week-end. On Saturday night, our Sojourner’s group met for the last time for dinner. We had it at our home, but did not have to do the main course. It was nice enough to have cocktails on the deck. We served margaritas. I also made marinated mushrooms, coconut shrimp with curried apricot sauce and caramelized onion hummus with pita chips. Look how pretty this pot is that I planted for the deck — dahlias and coleus.

I was so exhausted after everyone left. I was about to hit the sack, when the fireworks started. It was alumni week at Reed College, and they often end a big event with fireworks. I ran out in my nightgown to watch and tried to get some photos:

Yesterday, M and M came over to play in the afternoon and then the whole family was here for my famous focaccia sandwich and some salads on the deck. M and M did some chalk drawing on my studio patio.

Mia said that this is a pond with fish.

Remembering, Scooters and Watermelon

Monday, May 28th, 2007

When I was in school, today was known as Decoration Day. I was in the band and we marched to every cemetery in the area and played patriotic songs. A trumpet would play taps and then I would steel myself for the gun salute. Each time I would vow not to jump out of my skin, but it never worked. After the cemetery ceremonies, I would join my family, putting flowers and plants on the graves of loved ones. That was followed by a huge community meal at the community center. This was a ritual and now, it seems that we hardly remember what this day is for.

Today, I have thought a lot about the number of young people who have been buried in the past four years, taking part in an illegal and senseless war. This month is turning in to one of the most deadly so far. More of us than ever want this madness to end. Last night, I watched the 60 Minute show about the Iowa National Guard. When they were deployed two years ago, men and women volunteered, feeling it was a just war. Their loved ones at home were proud of them and felt it was a just cause. Now, in the face of having their tours of duty extended, most are having second thoughts.

I have failed to let you know the source of the bumper stickers that I am sending out. They are from MoveOn.org, Democracy in Action. You could get one bumper sticker free, but I made a sizable donation and received 100 of them. If you want one, I still have some. Just fill out the contact form at the top of this page with your snail mail. Click on the Bumper Sticker here or in my side bar. I have added some more photos. Join the Virtual Iraq War Protest by sending me a photo of your bumper sticker.

Today was a family day for us. I scored big points with M and M with these nifty Razor Scooters. Miles finished his dinner and said, “I’m gonna scoot, scoot, scoot until you cut the watermelon.” We have nice long walkway and a fairly quiet street for them to scoot around. We also took them over to Reed College Campus.

Of course, some booboo’s accompanied the scootering. Between the two of them, I think we used 5 Hello Kitty and Blues Clues band-aids.

scootkneebooboo.jpg

We had a Mediterranean dinner, lamb kabobs, lentil salad with feta (from Stephanie), steamed artichokes, sweet potato frites and of course, watermelon.

Isn’t this a site to take your mind off the cares of the world?
