Road Trip!

Saturday, August 11th, 2012

Mr C and I are heading out tomorrow to check out some mountains and rivers and fossils and lakes in central and eastern Oregon. I have wifi at most of our stops so I hope to be able to check in most days.

Steph, Jack, Mia and Miles are headed back from California and are camping at Shasta tonight and will be at Camp Sherman tomorrow. Our first stop is Sisters so we hope to spend some time with them at Steph’s favorite place, the Metolius River.

I am excited to see Mia after her two weeks at the young artist’s program in San Francisco. Here is a photo that Jayme took of all my grandchildren together this morning.

Mia has turned into a young woman this summer. It makes me so happy to see the smile on Miles. Paige is keeping an eye on her toy to make sure that he  does not abscond with it!!

Child Labor

Tuesday, July 24th, 2012

My daughter called to ask if we had any odd jobs that Mia and Miles might do to earn some money. I immediately thought of the fused scraps in a box that I wanted to sort by color. I suggested that Miles might do some sorting of the mess of screws and nails and nuts and bolts in his workshop.

Here is my box of scraps before.

Here is Mia at work.

Here are my scraps in plastic bags. I am so happy to have this done!!

Here is Miles at work sorting.

Mr C went out an bought a storage unit with little drawers. Looks awesome, now. Later, we took them out for sushi. It was a nice day.

Jayme sent me this photo of Paige in her new chair. How cute is she?

Week-end Fun

Sunday, June 17th, 2012

I am one tired little old lady, but it sure has been a fun week. We finished class on Friday with some show and tell. These are my screenprints, before washing with Kerr in front. I did a lot of red black and tangerine, hoping to get some raw material for a piece with a fire theme.

I will post more about the last day of class tomorrow.

Yesterday, I took Kerr out to Bonnie Bucknam’s house so that she could see and possibly purchase some of Bonnie’s vintage linens. I think two boxes are on the way to Mississippi. Then, we were off to Portland for some fun. We had lunch at a Vietnamese restaurant – yum.

Then, we checked out Cargo, a store with stuff, large and small, from all over the world. They  just got a shipment of fabulous stuff from Japan. Kerr bought a huge, sturdy and well used paper bag that was once used for carrying silk. It is beautiful. It was too big to take a photo. There were antique mulberry stencils.

I bought some vintage anime and manga magazines for Mia and Miles and a set of lovely illustrated number cards for Paige.

You can’t visit Portland and miss a trip to Powell’s Book Store which fills a whole city block. No books went home with her — no room in the suitcases!!

Our next stop was the Museum of Contemporary Craft. We enjoyed the exhibit of Betty Feve’s work in clay. I have long been an admirer of her work in the permanent collection. In the lab, at the back of the exhibit, was a community participation project.

There was clay and other stuff where visitors could make a sculpture for this display. Here is mine:

And, Kerr’s:

On the way home, we picked up some fresh salmon for dinner and enjoyed a lovely evening on the deck.

I dropped Kerr off at the airport this morning. I will miss her. It has been so much fun to have her around for the past few days. Hope she will come back, again.

Tonight, we had a nice family dinner. Here are some photos.

Artichoke hearts before and after being attacked

Scooter found a comfy place next to Steph in her cool blue and white shoes.

Mia was in her usual spot with sketchbook and pencil in hand.

She is officially 2 inches taller than me!!

Miles got his Mom to play Scrabble Slam.

Since it is father’s day, I should have gotten a photo of the two dads. What was I thinking? Steph brought this for dessert – yummy goodness.

Now, I am off to bed to catch up on my sleep.

The Metolius River

Saturday, May 19th, 2012

My daughter, Stephanie, has often told me of the beauty of this area of Oregon. She and her family camp there every year. I knew it was near Sisters.

Then, at the art show last week, one of the artists sold a painting titled, Metolius Light. I had not connected it to the place Steph loves until, I had a conversation with the artist about the painting. She told me it was a river near Sisters that she loves. I said I am going up there next week and I hope to go see it.

The magical thing about this river is how it starts as a spring bubbling up out of the moss. You can see it up there. And then, you look to the right and very soon, it has become a river.

You walk through the Ponderosa Pines and fir trees to find this magical spot.

It is quiet and peaceful except for the musical sound of the bubbling spring and the river flowing into the distance. I was entrance by it and could have stayed there for a long time.

We finally walked back to the cars and drove into Camp Sherman, which is located on the Metolius. It is lined by cabins that you can rent.

I came home and told Mr C that we are going to rent one of those cabins so that I can spend some more time on the Metolius.

Today, I planned to do some gardening. I only got as far as planning how to move my herb garden to planters on the deck. This required some internet searching and a trip to a couple of stores with Mr C. We ordered two of the larger ones from Restoration Hardware. They are made from galvanized sheet metal. I think the will look great on the deck.

Tonight, Jack and M and M came over for dinner. Steph is getting back from a week of work  for 3191 with Maria in Maine late tonight. I haven’t posted a photo of M & M for awhile. They are really growing up so fast.

They are engrossed with the Alchemy app on my iPad.

Mellow Yellow

Thursday, March 1st, 2012

It is March! I am loving March already. I will be a Grandma again. Mark’s little girl is due to arrive sometime around mid-March, and I can’t wait to hold a Congdon baby again.

In my studio, it will be a month of yellow 3 x 3’s. I need to put away my pile of blues and start pulling out the yellows. The first is up there to welcome you to March and spring.

Before I forget, here is the last blue 3 x3; a leap year 3 x 3!

And here they are, all together.

I want to thank those of you who made the nice comments about the big piece I am working on. I made it through a very hectic day yesterday. I thoroughly enjoyed the time I got to spend with M & M, who are growing up right before my eyes. They are such wonderful and thoughtful young people. I am so blessed to have them in my life. We managed to get to school right on time this morning.

I came home and put my feet up for a bit and then finished the documents that I needed to send to the accepted artists for the Trinity event in May. Once they were approved by the committee, I sent them off.

Now, Mr C and I are getting ready for our week-end in Seattle. I am going to the Washington State SDA symposium on Saturday and on Sunday, we have the opening of the SDA members exhibit at Ballard Works. I have one of my Aspen pieces in the show. Tomorrow afternoon, Mr C and I are going to the Seattle Art Museum to see the Gauguin exhibit. It will be a fun week-end, seeing old SDA friends (like Jane Dunnewold) and meeting some new friends, eating great Seattle cuisine and enjoying the many facets of art.

I might be able to check in with some goings on; we shall see.
