Happy Heart Day

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

I made this for Mr C and also, his favorite meal — grilled filet mignon, baked potato and broccoli rabe.

And here is my valentine themed 3 x 3 which is felted.

I thought I would continue with some photos from the San Francisco trip. On Friday afternoon, we took Mia to two of the places on her list — Japan Town and the Golden Gate bridge. She says Japan Town was the highlight of her visit.

After she had her fill of  Anime and Manga, we drove to the Bay to see the Golden Gate Bridge from Fort Point.

An iconic view of the bridge in fog.

Saturday was the baby shower and we all pitched in to help.

Mark has done a nice job in the back yard of their flat. This is an old laundry sink that he turned into a water garden with a fountain on one side and veggies growing in the other side.

Mark and Jayme at the shower.

Steph made them one of her bunnies.

My great nieces who live in California were anxious to help with the gifts.

This baby girl will be the best dressed girl in town. They received so many wonderful gifts. The food was great and a fun time was had by all.

On Sunday afternoon, we took Mia to the MOMA, the other must do thing on her list. This is her in a sculpture on the roof garden.

Sunshine on a Cloudy Day

Sunday, December 18th, 2011

I finished the binding on Gwen’s quilt. I will miss it when I send it off tomorrow. I have enjoyed the sunniness of this as I worked on it. Here is a detail with one of the silly suns that I quilted.

I am so late in getting packages sent. Lisa arrives tomorrow and I hope to get every thing packed up and in the mail and then enjoy the rest of the week with family fun.

Yesterday was Mia’s 12th birthday. I can’t believe that she is a tween, now.

We went out for sushi and then back to Steph’s for cake. Here is Mia blowing out the candles on the ice cream cake.

And here is Miles, enjoying the whole event.

Trinity Cathedral has a pretty big and active outreach program, providing meals to the homeless and low income folks around the church. Each year, they make fancy cookies, box them up and sell them to help fund their work. We bought 3 boxes, one for us, one for our neighbors and one for M & M’s family. Don’t they look tasty?

Mottainai – Essence of Things

Monday, November 21st, 2011

This is a most incredible exhibit! Steph and I took it in this afternoon. We so wanted to touch everything. The exhibit is on through the week-end at the Portland Japanese Garden. The Mottainai exhibition consists of objects hand-made by the wives of farmers, fishermen and lumbermen in rural communities in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The earlier pieces are lovingly patched and stitched over and over for reuse. The later objects are fabric and garments made from natural fibers like hemp, ramie, wisteria, elm, paper and kudzu.

I will just post some photos with comments where I remember something.

The first set of photos are of boro cloth – which is older cloth and garments that are patched and stitched.

Boro Apron.

If you click on this sign, you can read about sakiori. Sakiori is derived from the saki, meaning tear and ori for weave. The sakiori cloth uses torn strips of cloth for the weft.

This is a gorgeous garment  woven from ramie.

This piece of fabric covered a seat which was over a brazier for heat. The heat scorched the center of the fabric and it has been patched and mended many times for reuse.

We saw some very utilitarian sashiko. Most of what I have previously seen has been very decorative.

Kudzu fibers!!

Paper undergarment.

Paper garment.

Indigo dyed paper garment.

The following pieces are elm or linden tree fibers.

This is wisteria!! (I think)

Not sure what this is – just some patched and stitched fabric and balls of fibers.

It was just a lovely, lovely and humbling exhibit.

At the gift shop, I bought a pack of linen squares. I am not sure what I will do with them – maybe just fondle them.

I also bought the catalog, which I think is available at the online store, here.

Before heading to the garden, the whole family had lunch at Sushi Land for Miles’ birthday. He loves this place because the food comes around on a conveyer belt and he can grab whatever he wants.

Here is a sweet photo of Mia with her Dad.

I must get a good night’s sleep so that I can do all the holiday prep work tomorrow to load in the car for our drive down to Smith River, which is on the coast just south of Oregon. Scooter is going to the groomer to get all pretty for his first vacation with us.

Power Surge

Monday, April 25th, 2011

I don’t know if it is spring, the longer days of light or Vitamin B12, but I seem to have more energy for getting work done. Of course, now my studio is a mess.

I am playing with this hand-dyed fabric and some hand-dyed cheesecloth. I am thinking that I would do some beading and hand stitching on the puckered cheesecloth.

I spent quite a bit of time today getting work together for The Gathering of the Guilds this week-end. The Columbia Fiberarts Guild is participating for the first time. We are renting space from the Weaver’s Guild. I have Shibori dyed silk scarves and some small pieces of wall art. I had to print and fill out special tags for the work.

We had a great time yesterday, celebrating Easter. I made a delicious dinner and Steph brought rhubarb crisp which was delish. Here are Mia and Miles in their Easter Bonnets!! They are glued to the TV.

Saturday was a glorious day. It was in the low 70s and sunny. I planted some peas, arugula and some herbs. Now it is chilly and rainy again. I can’t really complain as it seems bad weather is a problem all over the country.

Today on our walk with Scooter, I noticed that we had lots of  chartreuse snow.

It really is pretty here in Portland this spring. This is our cherry tree that hangs down off the back of our property.

The colors are really glorious.

Tomorrow morning, I have to go down to Trinity to help take down the Back to Nature show. I also have to get organized to go to the beach on Wednesday with my STASH group. We will take some hand work and games and have lots of fun. I am ready for some R & R!

Painting Bridges

Monday, February 21st, 2011

I have 4 bridges drawn, cut and painted. I am quite happy with them.  I wanted to do one more bridge, but I don’t think the composition can manage one more bridge. I need to get the background done to see if I can add one more.

I tested some different paints and colors before I started painting.

I wanted to scan some Portland area maps to print on organza for this and I found out tonight that my scanner driver does not work with the Mac Snow Leopard OS. This happens every time I upgrade. Thankfully, my Epson printers work. I have a request in to Canon for some help. I hope I don’t have to buy yet another scanner.

We had an uneventful week-end. We went to Mia’s basketball game. Her school has not had basketball teams in the best so they are just getting started. They always lose by a lot of points, but it was such a thrill to see the heart and excitement that they give to the game. They are the Chinooks and they wear t-shirts that were printed with real fish.

Tonight, when I was working in the studio, I heard Scooter barking and Mr C yelling at him. Scooter ran downstairs and this is what he looks like when he knows someone is mad at him.

Don’t forget!! If you would like to buy an autographed copy of the Twelve X Twelve book and get a small piece of gericon art, click on the book in the side bar.
