Last Day of Desert Art Hunt

Friday, April 20th, 2012

First, I only managed to get one more purple 3 x 3 done today. I have been busy getting ready for the crit group tomorrow.

We drove out to Wonder Valley. Our first stop on the third day of our desert adventure was The Glass Outhouse Art Gallery.

The building was at one time, a rabbit pen. There really is a glass outhouse.

The proprietress was a hoot. That is her posing with the toilet. You can see out, but no one can see in. She had an assortment of framed photos in her office. They were all mistake photos with hands and fingers in front of the lens, and heads cut off, etc. Really hysterical. The gallery itself was quite nice. She changes the shows monthly. All around the place were little weird installations. This bottle installation was the largest.

In the distance, you could see one of the 5 acre plot cabins.

Next, we went out to visit Mike and Ann’s hairdresser who has quite the compound. He and his partner built an inn which has a nice pool and a room where he teaches yoga. He is an avid collector of hair product ephemera. It is in every nook and cranny.

Jeff’s partner (husband) creates beautiful jewelry, and they raise goats and chickens. It was quite the place.

Our next stop was high up in the desert above Pioneer town. This marker by a parking area is the only sign you have arrived at one of the High Desert Test Sites.

Here is what we found. There was one installation that we were unable to locate.

This had bottles of water with labels from different SW water sources.

The view from up their was just gorgeous.

This was labeled, “You Are Here.”

Not sure what this was – the makings of something, waiting for someone to assemble it?

So there you have it, the last installment of our excellent desert adventure.

And just look at this adorable girl!

Another Sunny Day

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

It was another sparkling,  yet brisk day in San Francisco. I am still feeling like a slug as I deal with the sinus infection. I felt lousy when I got up this morning and was moving in slow motion. I finally got my rear in gear and felt better by late morning. I went down and helped Jayme with Paige so that she could get ready to go to her first outing with Paige to a neighborhood group for moms and new babies.

Mr C and I went to a new restaurant a block away and had a delicious brunch. He had  baked eggs and I had a quiche with leeks and black trumpet mushrooms. Then, we went back downtown to go to the Contemporary Jewish Museum to see the show Do Not Destroy. Lisa was invited to participate.

You can see her piece, here. It sold the first night.

Here is the plaza as you enter the museum.

And some of the architecture in the area.

I loved the show because it is all about trees. I love trees and tree art. I was especially intrigued by this large work of birches which seemed like a painting from a distance. Up close, you see that is a paper collage. Sheet music, newsprint and other paper prints and photos are collaged for this scene. The faces in the collage give it an eerie sense when you get close.

This is a detail shot that I took before the guards told me no photos. Click on it to see the details.

I loved this old door on the church next door to the museum.

Lisa came over to spend some time with Paige this afternoon. Her dog, Wilfredo, came upstairs to visit Scooter. He was very excited to have company in his current home.

Tonight, we were to pooped to cook, so we ordered pizza. Tomorrow, we start on the next part of our journey. We are going to the Mojave desert to spend time with Steve’s brothers and their wives. We will spend the night in Valencia and then drive out to the desert on Saturday morning. We will stop here next week for another Paige fix!!

Baby, Oh, Baby

We just can’t get enough of this precious little girl!! Here she is, cradled in Grandpa’s hands.

I am so glad that we are here this week to help Mark and Jayme. Mark started a new job yesterday that is 4 days/10 hours a day. We have been able to help out, especially with grocery shopping and cooking dinner. It has been a treat to have meals with them every night.

Today, we picked up Lisa, and went to a wonderful Mexican restaurant near the San Francisco Center and had wonderful time catching up with her. She left us and went to see The Hunger Games and we did a little walking around Nordstrom and Bloomingdales, but I was not in a shopping mood.

I have not even been taking as many photos as I usually do. I did get a pic of the pretty paper flowers at the restaurant.

We came back to our place and I took a nap (still trying to get my mojo back) and then went downstairs to do some stuff for Jayme – changed the linens on their bed and did some laundry. Then I got to babysit Paige while she took a shower. We had fun taking some photos of her.

I am a tired Grandma. Going to get to bed early. Night.

Here I Am

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

I am in San Francisco getting acquainted with this precious bundle.

I got really sick over the week-end and thought we might have to cancel our trip. I finally realized that I had gotten a massive sinus infection as a result of the upper respiratory virus. I was able to see my Dr. yesterday morning. She ordered the Z pack for me. I got home and still wondered if we could make the trip. I asked Mr C how late we could leave and still get to Ashland for our motel reservation. He said, 3 pm. I crawled into bed and took a nap, got up at 2, packed my bags and we were on our way by 3.

Oregon is beautiful after all the rains. Lots of green buds on the trees.

We saw some interesting cloud formations.

The antibiotic kicked in and I felt pretty good this morning. We hit the road for California. One of our first sights is always Mt. Shasta.

We saw bursts of red bud color.

And orchards about to burst forth.

Interesting old barns.

Regimented crop plantings.

And finally, into San Francisco and time with this perfect little girl.

We went to Whole Foods and bought a bunch of food for Mark and Jayme and made a wonderful meal. Paige was wide awake and taking it all in. Mark thinks she was stimulated by the additional voices in the house. She started to get fussy. He grabbed her and she just calmed right down.

We are staying in the flat on the third floor of the building where they live. It is owned by my niece and her husband. We are so lucky to stay close by. Scooter is a little wierded by all the changes, but is being a good sport. I am really tired tonight, but wanted to check in to let you know where I have been. I brought no sewing with me at all. I had all kinds of plans for hand work and hand felting to keep up with the 3 X 3’s, but they will have to wait. I am taking a break.

The Pause Button

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

I have been stricken with a cruddy virus for two days or more. Sore throat, aches and no energy. I have only managed to work on the Artists Among Us database, using Filemaker Pro. I am getting the hang of it.

I am behind with my 3 x 3s. I was going to organize some work to do while I was gone. Feel like I have lost two days!!

Since I have no work to show, I will post some photos of my last walk with Scooter.

This woman was walking 6 dogs off leash with her Granddaughter following along. The calmest woman I have encountered in a long time!! Three of the dogs belong to her daughter.

The state flower, The Oregon Grape, is in bloom.

A Tulip Tree in the Rhodie Garden.

The ubiquitous moss.

Lots of pink.

Trilliums.

The willow tree that graces the entrance.

We have had two days of wind and rain. March is going out like a lion. I hope the weather gets better for our drive south on Sunday.

Here is Paige all dressed to go to her home yesterday. Can’t wait to see her in person.
