The Shape of Things

Tuesday, March 13th, 2007

Earlier this week, Mrs Mel did a post about “…but it’s fused”, in which she debunks the criticism of traditional quilters who think fusing is “just wrong”! I love fusing and I haven’t been doing much — I’ve been in to piecing. So I decided to get out one of my huge bags of fused scraps to make somthing. I had in mind doing a small quilt, but it just wasn’t working so it ended up as two postcards, titled The Shape of Things I and II. Now, my studio is a mess again from making two little post cards – arghh!

I enjoyed making these, but my back did not. I am still having back problems. I am fine when I am flat on my back, but most all day, I am in pain. I tried my ususal drug of choice, Aleve, but nada. Then I tried Tylenol extra strength – still nothing. So I went out and bought Advil Gel caps; I am feeling a little better — at least the pain is somewhat dulled.

I am still sorting beads – almost finished. I have become compulsive about it. Then I laugh and ask myself – why are you enjoying this mindless activity so much?

Sew and Tell Time!!

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2005

I’m hoping to have this title as a recurring theme! I want this blog thing to keep me in the studio making things to share with my daughters and who ever else happens by. Today The Pointless Sisters had their regularly scheduled meeting. They surprised me with a gift certificate to one of my favorite fabric stores – Fabrications in Healdsburg. Then at the end of the meeting I was presented with this Love Pillow with beautiful messages written by my artsy friends.

I was able to find time this afternoon to make this little quiltlet that is going to a special person. I can’t say who yet because he/she might be checking in here. This is made from antique Kimono fabrics and dupioni silk. It is 8.5 X 11 inches.

Returning from Retreating

Sunday, February 20th, 2005

I spent the week-end at a retreat with the vestry of my church. It was a working retreat, yet I’m feeling so refreshed from the time spent with people who are dedicated to the life of our church and want to see it grow and flourish. The setting was so bucolic – The Silver Penny Farm – which is a retreat center on a farm with sheep and baby lambs romping on the hillside. The main building is a beautiful old farm house with a big fireplace.

We spent some time yesterday thinking about those in the church for whom we are grateful. Someone had brought some lovely thank you cards and we wrote messages to about 35 people. Everyone agreed that it was a very satisfying activity – putting words on paper that express how you feel about someone.

I was reminded of my challenge this year to send fabric post cards as thank yous and for other special occasions. This afternoon I made these three cards that will go in the mail tomorrow. The two on the left are made from my fused antique Kimono stash. The flower card is made of hand-dyes and commercial fabrics.

Gratitude is our most direct line to God and the angels. If we take the time, no matter how crazy and troubled we feel, we can find something to be thankful for. Terry Lynn Taylor

Love is in the Mail

Monday, February 14th, 2005

Well, I had my visit with the surgeon today. She is a lovely young woman – could be my daughter. She gave me only one option – a mastectomy – because I have had radiation and cancer in that breast before. So, March 9th is the day. I had to schedule around all the things I do – like editing newsletters for my quilt guild and the church.

Today is Valentine’s Day and my family received the following postcards in the mail. I used hand dyes and antique kimono fabrics and silk. On Mia’s and Miles’, I stamped I love Mia and I love Miles and also some Os & Xs.

My Fabric Postcard Challenge

Monday, February 7th, 2005

I love to make tiny little art quilts. I have turned a whole deck of cards into tiny quilts as part of a challenge on the Quilt Art list. I sent my deck away and received a new deck of cards – each one was a little gem created by another fiber artist. This year I have decided to make fabric postcards to send in lieu of thank you notes, birthday cards and get well wishes. With Valentine’s Day looming, I think I have to get busy!! Here are three cards that I have completed so far.

This was for Steve’s birthday;

This was for my daughter Lisa‘s Birthday (she is very partial to bird imagery):

This was for my friend Diane‘s birthday:

When I mail the cards, I use a 37 cent stamp. Sometimes I ask for hand cancelling, other times I just drop them in the mailbox. So far they have all arrived at their destinations.
