Clean Sweep

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

I got an early start in the studio today so that I could clean up to start the next project. I started by folding and sorting all of the batiks that were covering every surface. Here are my piles with some semblance of order.

Here they are in their bins and  stored in the Ikea cabinet.

After a good sweeping of the scraps on the floor, I felt ready to forge ahead. First, I had to do some grocery shopping, get in a power walk in the rain and have lunch. Then, the creative block set in. I have had this piece roaming around in my head and showing up in my doodles for weeks. It is my attempt to abstract the hillside housing of Israel.

I decided to go with a simple square in a square — actually a wonky square in a wonky square. This is what I have so far. The fabric is all fused so I will eventually overlap and seal to batting.I used bright blue with yellow for the sky because the sun shines every day in Israel! But, I think I need to vary the sizes a little more.

I am unblocked and having fun with this. I had to quit to come up and watch Top Chef. New season, great food.

And now, a little mom brag. Lisa has one of her signature patchwork pillows in the new Stitch magazine, put out by Quilting Arts.

Reception at Life and Limb

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Twelve of the diptychs from the book, A Year of Mornings, were enlarged and beautifully framed. If you click on the photo above, you can see the photos better. We bought the top photo on the left. It has the back of Mia with her braid.

This little gallery/shop has lots of great stuff and they specialize in cacti!

That wall with the trees is really amazing.

Here are Steph and Jack chatting with a patron!!

And here is the adorable MAV — Maria — the co-conspirator.

Mia and Miles were playing out on the sidewalk. I took this photo through the glass and so you see a reflection of the gallery.

I enjoy being the mom of the artist. I am so proud of what the two girls have accomplished.

I found the perfect thread this morning for quilting the water. I wanted some teal and orange. I found a Superior King Tut that was perfect.

I started the quilting of the sky which is a little more complicated, but I am loving how it looks. I may have this finished and ready for binding or facing by tomorrow night.

Progeny Promotion

The next two weeks will be very exciting for Stephanie. The book, “A Year of Mornings”, will bring the co-photographer and blogger, Maria, to Portland, OR. On Thursday evening, if you are in Portland, come on over to Life and Limb from 6 – 9 pm. Maria and Steph and the whole family will be there. Twelve framed prints of photo pairs from the book will also be on display and for sale.

Next week, Steph flies to Portland, ME with Maria, and they will repeat the activities on the other coast. Jack will join Steph mid-week, so you know what we will be doing — shuttling to school and back, making lunches and enjoying some great time with M & M!

Steph and Maria got a nice mention in the New York Times in By Design. It is so gratifying to have my children grow up and become successful and love what they are doing in their lives!

I got some technical work done on the sun rise piece.  I hope to start quilting tomorrow. My dyes from Dharma arrived today, so I also plan to get some fabrics dyed for future pieces. I need lots of shades of browns and some turquoise. We are having beautiful fall weather. I think it will last for a couple of more days so that the dyeing can be finished before it gets cold and rainy.

Frustration

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

I have no pretty pictures of my own to show you because I have been working on my 12 X 12 Shelter challenge. So, I will show you daughter, Lisa’s, latest venture. She did a couple of collages in  her inimitable style which Pottery Barn Teen, silk-screened on canvas and have for sale on their website. Click to see larger images.

I have been doing the machine quilting on my shelter challenge. I am really not enjoying this piece. It is sort of a landscape type of work which I used to do, but now I find it tedious to do the fussy quilting. I  had another idea, really simple, which I didn’t do, because  — it was really simple. I think I may still try to whip it up as a back-up.

Do  you know what time it is? It is time to clean up and reorganize my messy studio. I  just can’t seem to keep a neat organized work area for long. I know that it is impeding on my ability to create. I am planning to do a completely new arrangement of my work environment. I also plan to get rid of my old traditional quilting books. I haven’t decided how to do this, but I will post a notice here.

Tuesday This and That

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

First, the exciting news that I promised. Steph is on a plane to New York City where she and Maria of 3191 will take part in a Martha Stewart show, all about blogging. (Oops, I forgot to say that the show is tomorrow morning, Wednesday.) They will debut their book based on last year’s blog, A Year of Mornings. Every one in the audience will get a free copy. Needless to say, she is excited and very nervous. They will be interviewed from the audience (all bloggers) near the beginning of the show, if you want to catch them doing their shtick.

I am trying to feel better. I think that I was just exhausted, yesterday. According to the Dr, the Azithromiacin stays in your system, doing its work for 12 days. So, I will hang in there for a couple of more days.

Did you know that there is a Sarah Palin baby name generator? Mine is Krinkle Bearcat Palin. If you want to find out what yours is, go to my political blog and read the great article by Anne Lamott, which is where I found the link. I also have a funny article from the New Yorker.

Urban Garden update. Look I have baby greens!!

The garden survived very well while we were away, thanks to Mr C’s irrigation system.

M & M and I planted some catnip for  their cat, Chester, but it looks as if I have a catnip bandit raiding my herb garden.

I forgot to mention in my last post, that there are more Millenium Park, Chicago and Ft. Wayne photos on my Flickr set, like this strange juxtaposition of signs.

It is going to be a hot day in Portland – 96° – so I am going to take a little walk before it gets hotter.
