Artist at Work

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

Lisa is here and has set up a temporary studio in my office. She was a good influence on me today. She was up and at work early this morning.

She is working on a deadline of illustrations for a cookbook. It is fun to see how she develops the painting, adding layers and colors and definition.

I got a lot done, working next door in my studio. I am almost ready to start the quilting of my 12 x 20 piece.

I did some printing with white paint on blue fabric today to use later  for my 3 x3’s. I really am loving working with blue. I think this whole exercise will be an enlightenment for me. Here is today’s 3 x 3:

This is printed with my aspen leaf thermofax screen. I love the wintery look of it.

Tonight was the opening of Lisa’s small show with her friend Trish Grantham at Land PDX, a gallery and bookstore on Mississippi in North Portland.

It was a gorgeous day again today. The sun was out all day. The days are getting longer. I love it. Here is the sunset today as I took Scooter out at the end of the day. The sun is much higher at 4:30.

And lastly,  here are the first of the Helibores blooming in the Rhodie Garden.

In a Blue Mood

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

Well, not really, but I am working with blue fabrics this month.  March will be yellow. Feb 1 is a felted piece.

Today’s 3 X3 just had to have some indigo.

I spent a good deal of time yesterday morning reorganizing the fabric in my studio — putting away the red stash, pulling some blues, folding and sorting my hand-dyes. It was good to take an accounting of what I have.

Then, I started in earnest working on the next Twelve by Twelve which is really Twelve by Twenty! I cut a piece of batting and was able to figure out how to put it together. I am making fused blocks of different sizes. I have two more small one before I can get every thing fused to the batting and start quilting.

This morning, I went to the airport to pick up Lisa who is here to hang a show with another artist friend. The opening is tomorrow night.  I made a delicious lentil/sweet potato stew for supper tonight — vegan, of course.

Lisa has lots of work to do so we are both going to be down in my studio and office working tomorrow, There will be one diversion — someone who does a style blog here in Portland is coming by to photograph Lisa for her blog. That should be fun.

Small Things

Monday, January 2nd, 2012

It has been a quiet day here. Mr C was not feeling well and so spent most of the day in bed.  We had to cancel our planned family time. I watched the Rose Bowl parade and did some SDA database work this morning.

This afternoon, I spent some good time in the studio. I finished tidying one side. I found the top of my cutting table and cleared the ironing table. The print table is, however, a chaotic mess. I need to find better storage for my paint supply. I found something on the IKEA website that looks promising and is not too expensive. I might have to make a trip there this week.

For my 3 X 3 piece, I did a reverse, needle turned circle applique. One of my original ideas for this project was to do a needle turned circle or two every day. I felt I would bore of it very soon. This is the first time I have ever done one of these and I think I did a pretty good job.

I received a couple of sweet gifts from my daughters for Christmas. I told Lisa that one could buy any thing in the Contemporary Craft Museum gift shop and I would love it. I received these two gifts, which Mia helped her select.

This wonderful little cup is just the right size to hold my rings, I think. I love the lime green inside.

These earrings have a stitched detail which I did not notice at first.

Here is the back side.

I have already enjoyed wearing them several times. Good things do come in small packages.

Family Creativity

Monday, September 12th, 2011

This is a gorgeous necklace made from yarn, designed by my daughter, Stephanie. Isn’t it gorgeous?

She and her creative partner, Maria, have designed a new little, limited edition book of two projects and how to illustrations. It features the beautiful yarns of Quince & Co.

You can read more about their collaboration on their blog, 3191 Miles Apart. The book, Interwoven, is available here.

I had a busy week-end. I have volunteered to be a helper a couple of Sundays a month for our Sunday School program — in the art activity room, of course. We had the open house yesterday. I also was helping with the Trinity Art’s Committee table during coffee hour. Every activity had a table — er, half a table to display their programs for the coming year. I created a poster for the workshops I am coordinating and a take away bookmark of all our events for the year.

Today, I have been working on labels for my Twelve by Twelve colorplay quilts for their trip to Houston. I ordered large plastic bags for each of the complete mosaics. The label has a photo of the mosaic and a label to identify it’s order when they are hung.

Terry is coming over later this week and we will get them all attached to the felt panels, packaged and ship them to Houston. Time is flying by.

This and That

Sunday, August 7th, 2011

I am just about finished with an orange piece. I just have to finish the edges. Here is a sneak peek.  And I have lovely bits of pieces like this in my studio. I might have to find a way to use them.

Today, the New York Times had a full page Starbuck’s ad — photography by my daughter, Stephanie.

This was taken on a photo shoot in Austin, TX. She was in the back of a moving top down Jeep when she took this photo!!

I also finished the Kayak in the Lily Pads. The lily pads gave me fits!!

I did some free motion quilting on this. It is the first time I have done that on my new Janome Horizon. It has a push button conversion system so that you can change the plate to a small needle hole which gives a lot more control when quilting. It took me some trial and error to figure it out. When all else fails, read the manual!!

I am making a lot of progress on my night time trauma. I was doing well until early this morning when I was sure I heard someone trying to break into the house. I don’t know what the noise was, but I couldn’t get back to sleep. I just hope I am tired enough to sleep well tonight.
