Something Finished

illuminatedrosales

It has been another busy day. But, I am happy to say that I have the Illuminated Rosales ready to deliver to Trinity tomorrow. It has been a while since I was working on this. This piece sort of evolved and went in a direction I didn’t originally plan, but I think it is an interesting piece, none the less. Here is the original photo:

I am quite pleased with the backing that I used. I had a rather large piece of industrial felt which I cut larger than the finished quilt. I Mistyfused the felt and the back of the quilt to give a better adhesion.

After the quilt was fused to the felt, I carefully rotary cut the edges to the same size.

We bought some aluminum bars at Home Depot and cut them to size. On one, we drilled holes a half inch from each end. I had a bit of a problem finding the right glue, but my local mixed media store had E6000 epoxy which Jane Dunnewold recommends in her tutorial. I glued one bar, with the holes to the top. The ends with the holes are not glued so that the holes can be accessed for hanging.

The other bar was glued to the bottom to help the quilt hang straight. I fused a label, and I was done. The fusing makes for a nice tight bond on the edges so I did no other finishing.

I was so busy doing this and gearing up for the SDA registration to start next week, that I almost forgot to do my drawing. I hope I have time to work on the drawing a bit more once the registration is underway.

This is a drawing of a very bruised pear.

I still have a scratchy throat, but I seem to be able to keep going. Tomorrow, I will be helping to text the new online registration system. Hopefully, it will go live on Monday.

Down to the Wire

Friday, November 30th, 2012

This last of the yell0w-orange series was done with some copper foil from Martha Stewart crafts. I ran out of silver foil and went out in search of a substitute. Found some in the MS sections of Michaels which was to be applied with a special glue and then burnishing. It did not work. So I tried a piece of the copper foil with Wonder Under  for this. It worked!

Here is the almost finished organ piece. It is so hard to photograph reflective stuff so trust me that this looks better in person than in this photo. I also need to redo the piece of filigree at the bottom of the piece. I wasn’t happy with the one I had cut. I will do that and finish the edges, probably with a facing and call it done.

Here is the photo that I was working from:

It is not quite what I envisioned, but close enough.

I can’t believe that it is December, tomorrow. We have a busy week-end. Symphony tomorrow night and Bach Christmas at Trinity on Sunday.

Have a good one.

Foiled Again!

Monday, November 26th, 2012

One of the nice things about doing a give away and asking for comments, is reading all the lovely things you all have to say. It has made for a pleasant couple of days! I had a rough night as the ADT alarm went off at 2 am. Sometimes the cell phone that it operates on gets a bad signal. We are awakened by the horrible sound that it makes – enough to give one a heart attack or at least a panic attack. We have to check to make sure that it was a false alarm and then either call ADT or wait for them to call us so that the police don’t show up. Needless to say, I couldn’t get back to sleep.

I am up against the big deadline to get the organ quilt finished. I have been cogitating on how best to portray the polished gold colored bottoms of the pipes where the sound is emitted. I have wanted to use some gold fabric with some foiling to act as a focal point for this piece. I have done a lot of foiling over the years, after taking a class from Jane Dunnewold. I have  had this huge container of foiling glue that is on its last legs. It is not working well for doing large areas.

I decided to use a gold organza for the effect that I want. I spread some glue, let it dry and attempted to foil.

It is not covering like it should and the glue is showing. I remembered that Jane says she now uses gel medium for foiling. So I am going to experiment with that tomorrow. If any one out there knows how to do this with gel medium, let me know.

I am obsessed with knitting the stocking for Paige. I was able to get her name done today. Tomorrow, I will start the blue snowflake motif.

Tomorrow night, I will do the random  drawing for the winner of the magazine.

I’m in Print

Monday, November 19th, 2012

I am pretty sure my friends are tired of hearing about this, but for me this is pretty darned awesome. I have two articles in the Winter 2012 issue of Art Quilting Studio. I received my copy today. It will hit the newsstands December 1. One article is about how I turn my art cloth into art quilts. I also have a tutorial on discharging.

The other article is about my Aspen Quilts.

In the back of the magazine is section titled Patchwork where several art quilts are featured. I have two pages there.

The issue is large and packed with wonderful articles, many of them by friends so I feel that I am in such good company — Connie Rose, Katherine Sands, Rayna Gilman, Kathie Briggs, Arlee Barr, Ellen Lindner, Dominie Nash, Natalya Aikens, Roxanne Lessa, Laurie Brainerd, Gloria Hansen, Clairan Ferrono and others I don’t know that well. Ricë Freeman-Zachery has two articles featuring Sandra Meech and Jenny Hearn.

This morning, I had my hips x-rayed and am waiting to hear what it shows. Then, Mr C and I got the Twelve by Twelve Colorplay quilts packed up and sent them on their way to Brenda Smith in Australia.

I still had time to work on the organ quilt. I finished the background quilting and started working on the embellishments. Here is a section of the wood filigree that will be fused in place and stitched.

And, here is today’s 3 x 3.

Good Things Amongst the Devastation

Tuesday, October 30th, 2012

I am saddened by the devastation of places that I love — New York and New Jersey. I lived and worked in New Jersey before I was married and spent a lot of time in NYC. What they are going through is unimaginable. I survived 5 hurricanes when we lived in Wilmington, NC, with much damage, but nothing like what has happened in the tri-state area.

I am happy that my family members in New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and West Virginia are all ok with minor damage. I am thankful that my sister came through surgery in upstate NY today and is recovering at home. I am slowly hearing from friends in the area who are fine.  I am so proud of our President who has been managing the relief with a steady hand and a comforting heart.

I am also thankful for a good night’s sleep and more energy today. The larger dose of Aleve seems to be making my achy joints feel better. The incessant cold rain, however, is not helping.

I decided to get outside my comfort zone and do raw edge applique on my organ quilt. I had a terrible time getting the tension right. I am using Superior Bottom Line for the zigzag stitch and it took some trial and error to get the tension just right. I was not a happy camper. I also realize why I like fusing. When I get the fabric on the batting, it does not move or wrinkle!!

I first pinned the pieces in place. I haven’t used my basting pins in ages!

Here is a section that is stitched down. I have several colors of Bottom Line on bobbins so I was able to match the fabric.

So, I have set this in motion. It will either be a wow quilt or a huge waste of gorgeous fabric. I wonder sometimes why I wander off into uncharted territory, but I keep doing it.

Sending love and good thoughts to all of you on the east coast. Keep the faith!
