Made the Cut

Monday, October 29th, 2012

I have not had the best day because I had a bad night. I didn’t sleep well at all and then Mr C got up early to drive to Corvallis to work today. So, I have dragged through the day.

I had a Dr appointment this afternoon, regarding my aching knees. I have had x-rays done and have a physical therapy appointment. I was told to double up on the Aleve.

Despite all that, I cut up the piece of fabric that I wanted to use for the pipes for the organ.

Here is the layout. I did all the cutting from the sketch, following Elizabeth Barton’s method. I also have not fused the fabric. so I don’t know if I will piece this or do raw edge applique.

The machine quilting is going to be a big part of this piece. I am getting excited now. The filigree will be the same fabric as the upper left corner. The pipe openings, will be foiled. I have to decide whether I want to foil directly on the pipe fabric or on another piece which will be laid over each pipe. Decisions, decisions.

Ok, I am so tired, I must go to bed early.

Soggy Saturday

Saturday, October 27th, 2012

It has been a soggy, dark day here in Portland. I have to get used to it, but when it is dark and cold, I find it difficult to get up and go. We finally took Scooter for a walk in the rain. I spent most of the morning dorking around on my computer, trying to make a signature jpeg have a transparent background so that I can insert it in a newsletter with a gray background. There must be a way. I finally gave up.

I did some clean up in my studio so that I can get back to work on the organ piece. I also made two 3 x 3s so that I am up to date.

I decided that it was best to work out the filigree pattern that is distinctive on the organ. So I enlarged it and printed it on freezer paper. Now, I can iron it to fabric and cut it. I have a few more pieces that I need to do. I think that once I anchor the piece with these, I can move on to the pipes and the wood casing parts.

As a reminder, this is the crop that I made of the pipes.

Here is the othe 3 x 3. It is a weird one. I am having trouble getting through this month as I don’t really have a lot of fabric to choose from.

Hope you are having a great week-end and if you live on the other coast, I will be sending you some positive vibes for getting through the Frankenstorm.

You Are Here

Thursday, October 11th, 2012

I am here and happy! I had an impromptu early birthday dinner for myself, Mr C, M & M and their dad, Jack. Stephanie has been working in Brooklyn all week – she comes home tomorrow night. We had grilled salmon, steamed broccoli, roasted potatoes and carrots and cupcakes.

M & M brought me some pretty flowers.

M & M are spending the night, and they have been having a ball with my Wii Fit Plus.

I received a package from my friend Judy Carpenter. Inside was this beautiful silk scarf which she dyed using a sugar syrup resist. It is gorgeous.

I couldn’t move forward on my organ piece because I didn’t have a piece of batting large enough. I did some shopping at Mill Ends, near my house. I bought a large piece of luscious charcoal gray felt, some cotton batting and some thick dark gray felt – not sure what I will do with that – maybe back some quilts to hang using Jane Dunnewold’s method.

I decided to use the charcoal gray felt for the organ piece. I have drawn a grid on it to help me free cut the pieces based on a gridded photo.

And today’s 3 x 3 – made on the fly!

Still Under Water

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012

I am still under water with my quilting, that is. After getting the maverick fish out of the way, I went back to the kelp piece and finished the quilting tonight. I am right on schedule as the original due date was the end of this week, but PAQA South has pushed the date back to early November so I am really early – yeah!

A couple of details:

Now, I can’t wait to try my new overstitch edge on this.

Bye-bye September

Sunday, September 30th, 2012

I didn’t sleep well last night and by the time I was home from church, did some grocery shopping, worked on some SDA e-blasts and harvested veggies from the garden, I was falling asleep on the sofa. I finally roused myself and got to the studio with barely enough time to finish quilting the maverick quilt.

I was inspired by a post on Brenda Smith’s blog where she showed a new quilt edging that she had done with a Janome Horizon foot. I didn’t bother to go look up the blog post. I pulled out my manual and found the overedge foot C which, when you use utility stitch 14, makes a really neat double zigzag edge. So I gave it a try. I really like the effect and it was so easy to do.

I will post the whole quilt tomorrow.

Here is the whole of the red-orange 3 x3’s for September.

Now, on to blue-purple. I wonder what I have in my stash?
