August Arrives

Thursday, August 2nd, 2012

It is too soon, August!! Summer is getting away from me. A new month and a new color for my 3 x 3’s. This month, I have chosen the cool color of blue-green. I did some foiling for the first one. And, here is today’s.

I spent much of yesterday and this morning cleaning up my studio, putting away magenta fabrics, pulling blue-green and procrastinating. I find it so daunting to cut into beautiful fabric – so afraid I will waste some or make a mistake. After lunch, I just did it. I have created some simple fused blocks in different sizes. This is a technique I learned in a workshop with Melody Johnson. I have not used it in a long time, but felt it would work well for the Rhythm and Hues piece.

Once I got started, I couldn’t stop slashing and fusing. I think I have enough blocks to put into a composition tomorrow.

I have been asked by the editor of Art Quilting Studio, published by Somerset, that they would like me to write two articles for them. One will be on my abstract quilts that I construct from my art cloth. The other will be about making my Aspen Quilts. I will also have some pieces featured in an article on patchwork quilts. Mine are fused, but fit that theme, I guess. I have to ship 10 quilts to them for photography. I had to arrange to retrieve two of them from the High Fiber Diet elements show. Fortunately, they were not due to be hung until September.

This is very exciting and very unexpected. I am not sure what is happening, but it feels pretty good. We have a lot of traveling planned this month so I have to get organized and work smart.

That is it for tonight. I want to watch the adorable Gabby Douglas win the gold medal in gymnastics. I think she looks like a young Oprah!!

Over the Rainbow

Monday, July 30th, 2012

I have been playing with my rainbow fabrics for the Rhythm and Hues piece. I was not sure what to do for the background, but now I am thinking the darker rainbow will work for the background with maybe some black thrown in.

The morning was spent on my computer doing SDA work. If you are reading this and are a member of SDA, look for an important e-mail tomorrow. Just saying!

I wanted to tell you about a book that I downloaded to the Kindle App on my iPad. It is titled, Journey to Abstraction, by Sue St. John.

It is nicely illustrated with abstract works of art with a play by play of how it was created by the artist. The last section of the book has 4 step by step demonstrations that you can do to create your own mixed media piece.

Here is one of the tips from the author:

Find Shapes and Patterns:
Shapes and patterns are elemental to the abstract artist. In order to paint abstract, you must teach yourself to observe the shapes and patterns in the world. As you go about your daily activities, notice the shapes around you- the triangles in the roof tiles, the spheres in the fruit dangling from a tree, or the free form shapes the shadows of tree branches and leaves make on the sidewalk.

I read most of the book on my flight to and from Long Beach. I was not enthralled with all of the illustrations, but found many that spoke to me.

Here are yesterday and today’s 3 x3. Almost time to pick the next tertiary color!

Back to the Olympics. I sure hate how they are covered. I wish we could see them in real time. Instead we are spoon fed what NBC wants us to see when they want us to see it.

I Love Summer in Oregon

Friday, July 13th, 2012

I had another very pleasant day, just being. We are having those perfect summer Oregon days — warm and breezy. I hosted an exhibit opening at Trinity tonight, 6 – 8 pm. We stopped and picked up some grilled salmon and tabouleh salad at New Seasons and ate on the deck in the lovely summer air with the dwindling light. It was lovely.

I noticed that I had gotten a wonky photo of Persephone so I rephotographed her today.

I also finished the edges on the water quilt and made a sleeve. Tomorrow, I will finish the sleeves and labels and make the hanging devices and get everything photographed.

I need to look at some calls for entry and start work on some new projects. I hope you are having a lovely week-end, too.

Persephone and Pomegranates

Thursday, July 12th, 2012

Today is the reveal for the Twelve by 12/20 mythology challenge. To read the story of the myth, please go to the Twelve blog.

I made this piece with batiks as I have the others in this series. I love working with them and mixing them up in a design. This time, I did all the quilting with black thread. When I first made this, I was not going to put a figure in it. I really do not like the human figure used in quilts. I don’t know why and don’t flame me!!

So, I had an idea of how I could add Persephone to this and not have to worry too much about creating a body. I made this drawing.

I then scanned it and printed it on silk organza. I carefully cut it and fused it to the quilt and then stitched it with black thread and added a pomegranate.

Here are a couple of details:

I have had a busy and productive day, getting ready for the STASH meeting today and finishing my water piece. Here is Wednesday’s 3 x 3.

Re-Zoom Zoom

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

After a good night’s sleep and some meds, I felt much better and was zooming around the studio once again.

I had a sudden and enlightened idea about a finishing touch for my myth piece for the Twelve by Twelve reveal on Thursday. I spent the morning working that out. It meant doing a drawing and printing on organza and stitching it to the otherwise finished piece. I am really happy with it. Check back on Thursday for a look at what I did.

I also sewed two sleeves for the air and fire pieces and started getting the finishing touches done on them.

I also painted a big piece of canvas with gesso for a fun project with my STASH group on Thursday. Tomorrow, I have to get some things cleaned up and do some prep work for the lunch that I am preparing for them.

Last night when I went to bed, I felt really doubtful about where I was going with the deep sea piece. In the light of day, it didn’t look that bad and so throughout the day, I worked on it bit by bit. Tonight, I got it fused together, and I hope to do some quilting on it tomorrow. I really love the colors in this.

I found this great fabric for the back.

Mia gets home tomorrow from her two week adventure in the wilderness. We can’t wait to see her and hear all about the other kids and the adventures that she had.
