We Have a Winner

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Sheila Mahanke Barnes was chosen by the random number generator. Send me your snail mail and I will send this on to you!!

It is a beautiful day in Portland, brisk and sunny with grand views of Mt. Hood. Reva and I took the bus downtown to meet up with some of our STASH group for lunch at a Vietnamese restaurant and then some art viewing. We went to the Contemporary Craft Museum where my guild has a small show in their showcase. The theme is fire and earth. I have my Scorched Earth piece there.

We had a small gift exchange. I made these bags for each one with their name stamped.

I also repurposed an old quilt that I made in 2007 and created 5 small pieces. This was made from hand-dyed silk, organza and cheese cloth. It was heavily hand stitched with perle cotton.

Here are the newpieces:

I added some beads to some of them and satin stitched the edges. I love making these little pieces.

Mr C and Scooter went out and cut down a tree while I was gone. He said it did not take as long because I was not with him. (Me: Oh, look at that one over there. Wait, I see one down there that looks perfect! Etc.)

So, guess what I will be doing this week-end!!

Let’s Celebrate!

Monday, December 5th, 2011

I was going to write a deep thought blog post about how I feel that after a year of wallowing, I feel as if a fog is lifting from my life. Then, I noticed that my last post was number 1500. That number was mind boggling to me.

To celebrate, I will give the 12 x 12 quilt up there to someone who leaves me a comment. It is one of the four quilts that I did for the eggplant challenge. They were subtitled, a la Albers. This photo is not a good representation of the true colors which are very rich. It is silk and quilted with silk thread.

I am happy to say that I am feeling lighter and happier and more in control of my life. I can’t say that there is anything specific and it has probably been gradual. I hope that I can now begin to do work again that satisfies me and is worthy of my time and energy. This year has been a struggle for me. Thank goodness for the Twelve by Twelve challenges. They have kept me moving along and given me a sense of accomplishment when needed. And certainly, the Houston experience was a huge boost to our whole group.

I have been quilting Gwen’s sunshine quilt. Here it is sandwiched and ready to go.

I haven’t done much preparation for Christmas. We went out to the nursery yesterday and bought this pretty wreath made from rose hips.

I think we will get a tree at the end of this week. We are hosting a party for one of the priests from Trinity. She is retiring this month. Steve is on the commission that worked with her, and so they are having a special retirement party for her. It will be an incentive to get the house looking Christmassy. (Is that a word?)

I hope you will leave me a comment. I will do the drawing on Wednesday.

The Sunshine Quilt

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

This is a bad photo of Gwen’s quilt. I finished piecing it yesterday. This morning I ran out to Mill Ends and found a couple of fabrics for borders. The inner border is a stripy print with yellow, orange and green and the outer borders are a pin dot orange. I love the sunshiny aura of this quilt. I was too tired to sew the outer borders on tonight. I hope to get that done tomorrow and then I can sandwich it and get it quilted.

Mr C had a meeting in Corvallis today — sort of a job interview with a start up company run by a former employee of his. Looks like he might do some part time consulting for them. He was gone all day and I must admit to being a bit lonely. Of course, Scooter kept me company. I took him for two walks. It was a gorgeous sunny day, a bit brisk, but beautiful none the less.

I took Scooter to the Rhodie Garden. We hadn’t paid a visit for some time. The water was so sparkling from the sun. Here are some photos that I took with my iPhone.

A Gaggle of Geese

This photo is of the triplet trees on the Reed Campus.

Tomorrow night is the opening of our annual December Trinity Arts outreach art show and sale. This year, we are featuring art from Cuba to benefit the Center for Cuban Studies and its art programs for children with Down Syndrome in Cuba. We are having a fiesta with Cuban music and food. My friend Diane and I are going to try out our new virtual terminals for Art Sales. We couldn’t use the Square Up because the funds go in to the church account so the bank set us up with their system that works with iPhones and iPads.

Love Me Some Silk Organza and Paint

Sunday, October 23rd, 2011

That is more like it. I had an epiphany during the night. So this afternoon, I headed to the studio and painted some silk organza with orange and yellow paint. Here it is drying.

I roughly cut the shapes of the poppies and covered the silk poppies on the little quilt.

I stitched around the organza, following the outline of the poppies beneath. Then I trimmed close to the stitching with the result up at the top. I am very happy with this. The organza gives a nice texture, too.

Tomorrow, I will do some free motion quilting to define the petals and add some texture. I also want to add some leaves and am working on how to do that tonight – maybe with hand stitching with Perle cotton or maybe with a little green silk and machine thread work. The leaves are very lacy.

Sneak Peek

Saturday, October 22nd, 2011

Here is a sneak peek at what I am working on today. It is a piece with California Poppies. I need more yellow in the poppies so I tried paint — fail!

You can’t even tell that I added paint to the one on the right. This is silk charmeuse that is already fused which makes it difficult.

I have decided that I will add the yellow and do the leaves with thread painting.

It was an unexpected nice day around here. No rain and not too cold and a bit of sunshine. Fall color is taking its time this year. I took these photos this morning on our walk. The color is beginning to pop here and there.

Hope you are having a nice week-end, wherever you are.
