One Down, Two to Go

Artists Among Us is history for another year. The show closed yesterday. Last night I reconciled the database with the receipts. This morning I printed all the sales inventories and headed to Trinity to help with art pick up. When I got home, it was almost 7 pm. I made some dinner and headed to my basement hideaway and settled into my sofa and did some hand stitching on my SAQA auction quilt for two hours while I switched back and forth between The Voice and Dancing With the Stars. It was so nice to do some hand work.

The bowl up there is our purchase from the show, made by our featured artist, Chris Baskin. Here is a photo of him with the display of his beautiful work.

Here is one of his beautiful pitchers with his work as the backdrop. There were several beautiful arrangements around the room, using his pottery.

We had several middle school kids from the church who served yummy food at the Gala. They were so gracious and seemed to be having a great time.

It was a whirlwind week-end with lots of work. So, tomorrow, I get back to working on the SDA Conference and planning for attending Lisa’s wedding. We leave a week from tomorrow.

Productive Week-end

Wow! What gorgeous weather we have been having. I was able to finish planting my veggie gardens, but it has been so hot that I have had to water them copiously because we don’t have the sprinklers and drip system going yet.

On Friday, I got a package in the mail of a second possible dress to wear to Lisa’s wedding. It was the same make and size as the dress I bought in California, but in a jade color instead of black. I tried it on and it was too big. So I tried on the other dress and it was too big. I have not lost that much weight since we were in CA, but I guess I have lost lots of inches. These were both 0X which is the smallest of the plus sizes. I was in a panic. With every thing I have to do between now and June 1, I didn’t want to be hunting for a dress.

So, I Saturday morning, Mr C and I went off to Washington Square Mall which has some of the nicer shops. I went to Nordstroms and knowing that I was no longer a plus size, I wandered aimlessly from department to department. I was about to leave and head out into the mall when a clerk came up to me and said that I looked great in the color I was wearing. It was a new Eileen Fisher top and pants. I realized that I was in the Eileen Fisher department. Next thing I know, I am bearing my soul to this poor woman. She took me over to a rack of just in silk summer dresses. Wow! I found something I loved. I tried it on and that was it. It was the type of thing I had always had in mind to wear. Here it is and the jacket that goes with it.

I got a large, not an extra-large, a large! I am not sure if I need to shorten it or not. I am going to wait until a week before the wedding because if I lose some more, it may make it longer. But I am so happy with this.

I spent a lot of time this week-end getting the Artists Among Us database done. I got the bar code font to work and the scanner to operate with the Arts PC laptop. That was a big relief. Today, I finished inputting the artists inventories and sent them out for approval.

And so, tonight, I was able to get back to the studio. I made a few more of the cruciforms. I fused them together in 4 different blocks. You can see them up at the top. My idea was to then fuse them to black silk which would form a larger criciform.

I like what is happening with the black setting off the cruciforms so I will get this finished and quilt it tomorrow.

Friday?

Where did this week go? I started the month feeling ahead of the game, but things are getting out of hand very quickly. Turkey day is next week – at least I have the turkey ordered.

This morning I drove out to Clackamas to pick up my new red glasses. I really like them, and I got rave reviews tonight when I saw a bunch of friends. Here is my smiley face.

Tonight we had the opening of our holiday show at Trinity. The crafts are mainly from Palestine. We have friends who were on the Israel trip with us a few years ago. When the husband retired from his medical practice, they started going to Jerusalem for 6 months out of the year where he volunteered in a hospital, working with new doctors. She volunteers with one of the groups that made some of the things we have for sale. I bought this  felted nativity scene which was made by the young people in this group, some of which have Down’s Syndrome.

I love it!!

This afternoon when I was down in the studio, I looked at the organ piece in daylight and decided it was not as bad as I thought. I think the quilting is coming together. Sometimes, we get to close to our work when it is a bit tedious. I just need to get past the tedious part. I will be back at it tomorrow.

Having a Busy Week

Nothing like 3 days of meetings and appointments to keep you on your toes. I am so hoping to have a day at home for some studio time tomorrow. I got my Janome back and I am itching to get back to machine quilting the Rosales Organ piece.

We were very excited with the results of the election. I love that so many women won seats in Congress. All of the progressive measures for school and library funding passed in Portland. I think the results of this election and the coalition formed by the Dems bodes well for our future.

Yesterday, I had the local SAQA meeting here  — 26 creative women. Many revealed their challenge pieces. I didn’t get mine done. The challenge was to make a 12 by 12 quilt using SAQA’s new definition of an art quilt: SAQA defines an art quilt as “a creative visual work that is layered and stitched or that references this form of stitched layered structure.”  We decided to use the latter part of the definition. There were some very interesting pieces.

Today, I had STASH at Terry’s. She is having a busy week like mine, so we went out to lunch. I had to rush home and then off in the other direction to have my one year post cataract surgery eye exam. No real change. Since I lost my red glasses last summer, I ordered a new pair. They are red, and I really like them. Can’t wait for them to arrive.

My Janome is working like a dream so I whipped up 3 x 3s with no tension problems.

Do you know that it is Thanksgiving Day in just 2 weeks! Yikes.

Rain and Stuff

The rain is back, but it has been a weird day — warm and muggy with the rain. We even had thunder and lightening. A tree on the street below the back of our house came down across the street and caused a bit of excitement tonight.

I braved the elements and went out to get some errands done. I took my desk top computer, a Mac Mini, in for an upgrade of ram and memory. They called tonight and it is ready to pick up tomorrow. I will be so happy to have it all zippy again.

Then, I went to get my flu shot at the Kaiser clinic near me. Then across the street to the Kaiser Vision facility. I was going to get some new red glasses to replace the ones I lost last September, but they informed me that I have to have an eye exam since I had the cataract surgery a year ago. So I will have to wait until November.

I did a little retail therapy at the mall and picked up some skinny black jeans, some new jammies and a cool chartreuse sweater, on sale.

Tonight, I worked on Paige’s sweater. It is almost assembled. I just have to stitch the sleeves and add the buttons. Can’t wait to see her in it in a few days.

Exciting news! I got the proofs for my two articles for Art Quilting Studio magazine. I am blown away with how cool my quilts. look. They have one of my aspen quilts in a full page looking as if it is hanging in an aspen grove. I love it.  I have to read the article carefully – in my first check, I found a couple of spelling errors.
