Coasting or Wasting Time?

Monday, March 12th, 2012

After finishing that big quilt, I have found it hard to get back in the groove. I finally finished cleaning my office. Lots of recycling and organizing and sorting through archaeological layers.

That is a photo of the gorgeous scarf that I purchased from Rayna Gilman. I love it so much. I wear it as often as I can. I get so many nice comments about it, most people assume it is something that I made — I wish.

Today, I had thought about my son becoming a father. In my mind, I saw him holding his little girl, and I started sobbing. I am so happy for him and Jayme. I can’t wait to see what our little girl will look like and what they are naming her. I keep my iPhone with me all the time — I want to know when things are happening.

Here are the two latest 3 x 3’s:

So, tomorrow, I will start work on my next piece. I printed a photo to use as inspiration. More about that tomorrow.

A Productive Day

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

I did it! I managed to make a 3 x  3 for every day of January. I am ready to move on to a new color. I have decided to do the primary colors first, and then the secondary. So will it be blue or yellow for February?

Here is today’s 3 X 3, made from scraps of vintage kimono fabrics.

I spent the morning getting a Constant Contact mailing out for Trinity Arts Call for Artists for our May fine art show and sale. I have received 5 entries so far.

After lunch, I went out to The Pine Needle Quilt shop in Lake Oswego to beef up my batiks for my online class/Twelve challenge piece.

Here are my piles by color and value:

I am very pleased with the range of values.

The light values are the hardes, but I am very pleased with these.

Tonight, I cranked out 2 Constant Contact e-mails for SDA reps. When I signed up for the Trinity Arts Constant Contact, I received a phone call from a CC coach. I laughed and told her, I was not new to CC as I do most of the e-mails for SDA. They are really a great company to work with. They have recently made some great changes in their system, making it really easy to edit and send.

Tomorrow, I have to put away a mess of fabric and get to work on assembling my work of art. Never a dull moment!

Monday Mash UP

Monday, January 9th, 2012

Today was a mixed bag for me. I had a meeting at Trinity at 12:30 which means getting my rear in gear and walking the dog early so that I can eat lunch early and then hit the road. Just before I left, the mail arrived with bad news. Allstate canceled our homeowner’s insurance because of the two thefts last year. Argh!! Mr C got on the phone and started tracking down some other insurance with no good results — we are damaged goods!

While I was at my meeting, he went over to our Wells Fargo Office. They hold our mortgage. A very nice employee did some research and found a company that may do business with us. This just makes me so furious. I hate that this saga seems to have no end.

Anyway, the meeting was great. I am part of the three amigos who are coordinating the annual Artists Among Us Fine Art Show and Sale at Trinity which happens in May. I am doing all of the computer work. Our resident graphic artist did a fabulous poster for us. We met with all of our other committee chairs and we are on the way to a successful event.

On the way home, I stopped at Office Depot to pick up some sheet protectors and a new binder for a class I am taking. (More about that later.) While there, I checked out their storage items. I found something that is perfect for my paints, inks and other printing supplies. I brought it home and after giving up on the instructions, which were drawings, I used my intuition and got it assembled.

The bins can be pulled out and taken to my print table, plus, I can easily see what is in the bins.

Oh and the 3 x 3 for today is fused and stitched.

It’s In The Bag

Friday, December 9th, 2011

Oregon SAQA has specific requirements for the bag that holds our quilt when it is traveling in a SAQA show. It must be a muslin bag (no prints or plastic wrappings), with a velcro closure and no ties. It must have a plastic zip lock bag sewn to the outside and a label in the baggie which has a photo of the quilt and name, address, measurements, etc.)

I am delivering the quilt next week so I decided to get mine done today as I have some busy days ahead. I made the muslin bag a few inches longer than the quilt when it is rolled on a swim noodle and big enough in circumference so that the quilt will slip inside and out, easily.

I made French seams to prevent raveling when it is in use.

I stitched velcro to the open ends.

I should remember to stitch the plasic bag to the outside before I sew the seams as it is difficult enough to stitch on plastic as it is.

The curators do not like ties around the quilt so I fashioned some velcro closures to keep mine in place when it is rolled around the swim noodle.

Here it is holding the quilt around the noodle.

So, I am happy to have this done and ready to deliver.

I found this great little gizmo on Etsy when I was surfing for Christmas gifts. The Nikon camera I have, does not have a strap for the lens cover and so I am always misplacing it. This little gizmo  holds it when not on the camera and attaches to the camera strap. It is made from leather.

This and That, Again

Monday, November 14th, 2011

So many things going on and thankfully, I am fighting back against a sinus infection. I was down most of the week-end with a horrible sinus headache. I am doing all the none antibiotic things I can, and it is working. Woo hoo. I had a very busy day catching up with stuff.

I went out yesterday and bought the lovely yarn up there. It is a merino wool/bamboo combo that is machine washable. I am making a sweater for the new baby. I wanted to do that green color, but couldn’t find the right yarn so that will have to wait. I love this heathery robin’s egg blue.

My new camera arrived today. When my brand new Nikon 3100 was stolen last spring, I didn’t get a new one because it was quite expensive and I thought I could get along with a cheaper camera for a bit so I bought a used Canon Rebel. I have had so much trouble photographing my quilts. I found a used Nikon 3100 for almost half the price of a new one plus they are buying my Rebel. It turned out to be a good deal. I used it for photos tonight, and I am so happy.

I had a lot of SDA work to do today, but I managed to sew 16 more disappearing nine patch blocks for Gwen’s quilt.

The Oregon art professor who led our critique session a few weeks ago, recommended the book Making Art by Terry Barrett. It is a college text and was quite expensive, so I hope to put it to good use!

I took these two photos with my iPhone on our walk this morning. We still have some great color, but the rain has arrived and so the leaves are falling. Can you see Mr C and Scooter in these photos?
