A Happy Fourth of July

Wednesday, July 4th, 2007

Hope you are all having a happy day, celebrating our Democracy. We must never take it for granted, as we are now finding out. That is my itty bitty rant for today.

I am having such a good day. Time to relax, make some food for a dinner on the deck with Lisa, the anticipation of M & M returning to Portland tonight, with their Mom and Dad, and seeing all my work from the discharge class on the design wall.

dischargebodyofwork.jpg

I am so inspired by this cloth and can’t wait to work with it.

Here are some close-ups of the work that I had to bring home to finish. The first is the construction fence resist discharge. Next to it is the second skinny tape on the silk screen piece.

constfencedischarge1.jpg

The next two photos show the pieces that were done with the linear pieces of tape on the silk screen. I just love how that ugly piece of brown discharged.

silkscreendischarge2.jpg

These two pieces are silk that has been over-dyed – also the piece on the right in the above photo. The fabric on the right below was gift from Jeannie who comments often on my blog.

silkscreensilkdischarge.jpg

This piece had torn masking tape on the fabric so where the tape was, it is darker.

tapeonfabricdischarge.jpg

The next piece had squished discharge paste the first time around so I added new elements, using turquoise dye in the paste.

These are samplers using turquoise dye in the paste.

These are silk pieces that had been over dyed. The piece on the right was from Jeannie. The bottom piece is cotton. The silk on the left is raw silk that has been over-dyed. These all used found objects.

This piece was done using a couple of thermofax screens.

And Just For Fun! I saw Deb R’s Simpson’s persona on her blog and had to try it. Go here to create your own. This looks scarily like me!!

Hope you are having a great day, too!

PS: I lost 4.4 pounds. I had to weigh yesterday because they were closed today. Yeah!

Thank You, Cindy Sheehan

She was just a mom from California who lost a son in Iraq.

She dared to ask the president to answer a simple question, “For what noble cause did my son die?”

She endured the taunts, condemnation and name calling of the right wing establishment and media.

She camped out in a ditch in Crawford, Texas, hoping to get an audience with the president and to get an answer to her question.

She motivated and mobilized a movement against the Iraq war when the majority of the country still thought that Iraq had something to do with 9/11.

She has quit her quest to get that answer and is going home. This is part of what she said in her farewell letter:

The most devastating conclusion that I reached this morning, however, was that Casey did indeed die for nothing. His precious lifeblood drained out in a country far away from his family who loves him, killed by his own country which is beholden to and run by a war machine that even controls what we think. I have tried every since he died to make his sacrifice meaningful. Casey died for a country which cares more about who will be the next American Idol than how many people will be killed in the next few months while Democrats and Republicans play politics with human lives. It is so painful to me to know that I bought into this system for so many years and Casey paid the price for that allegiance. I failed my boy and that hurts the most.

You can read the entire letter here. Cindy became totally disillusioned, as many of us have, when the Democrats caved to the president and sent him a bill to fund the war with no time-lines for withdrawal of our troops. When 72% of the country wants us out, it is hard to understand why they caved.

Anyway, I wanted to say a public thank you to Cindy for being the brave soul that she was and for putting herself out there when the rest of us were reticent or thought it couldn’t possibly go on for this long. I wish for her some good sleep in a comfortable bed and lots of hugs from her children, but most of all I want her to feel proud of what she has done for Casey and for us all.

Remembering, Scooters and Watermelon

Monday, May 28th, 2007

When I was in school, today was known as Decoration Day. I was in the band and we marched to every cemetery in the area and played patriotic songs. A trumpet would play taps and then I would steel myself for the gun salute. Each time I would vow not to jump out of my skin, but it never worked. After the cemetery ceremonies, I would join my family, putting flowers and plants on the graves of loved ones. That was followed by a huge community meal at the community center. This was a ritual and now, it seems that we hardly remember what this day is for.

Today, I have thought a lot about the number of young people who have been buried in the past four years, taking part in an illegal and senseless war. This month is turning in to one of the most deadly so far. More of us than ever want this madness to end. Last night, I watched the 60 Minute show about the Iowa National Guard. When they were deployed two years ago, men and women volunteered, feeling it was a just war. Their loved ones at home were proud of them and felt it was a just cause. Now, in the face of having their tours of duty extended, most are having second thoughts.

I have failed to let you know the source of the bumper stickers that I am sending out. They are from MoveOn.org, Democracy in Action. You could get one bumper sticker free, but I made a sizable donation and received 100 of them. If you want one, I still have some. Just fill out the contact form at the top of this page with your snail mail. Click on the Bumper Sticker here or in my side bar. I have added some more photos. Join the Virtual Iraq War Protest by sending me a photo of your bumper sticker.

Today was a family day for us. I scored big points with M and M with these nifty Razor Scooters. Miles finished his dinner and said, “I’m gonna scoot, scoot, scoot until you cut the watermelon.” We have nice long walkway and a fairly quiet street for them to scoot around. We also took them over to Reed College Campus.

Of course, some booboo’s accompanied the scootering. Between the two of them, I think we used 5 Hello Kitty and Blues Clues band-aids.

We had a Mediterranean dinner, lamb kabobs, lentil salad with feta (from Stephanie), steamed artichokes, sweet potato frites and of course, watermelon.

Isn’t this a site to take your mind off the cares of the world?

Endless War or End This War

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

Would you like this bumper sticker? Read on…

endthiswar.jpg

Four years ago today, President Bush declared, “Mission accomplished.” And here we are mired in what seems to be an endless war. Our young men and women are dying at an increased rate as they are caught in an ugly civil war in Iraq.

Back in March, when I posted the photos of the flags at Reed College depicting the number of dead Iraqis and US soldiers, I said that I was planning my own little protest. I have been waiting for a shipment of the bumper stickers you see at the beginning of this blog. They have arrived, and today seemed like a good day to ask you to participate in my anti-war project

If you send me your snail mail address, I will send you a bumper sticker. All I ask is that you take a photo of the bumper sticker in a public place. I don’t want anyone to do anything illegal or to break the law!!! Then I want you to e-mail the jpeg to me. I am setting up a Flickr photo set where I will post them.

To send me your snail mail, just click on the contact button on the top right of my site. I have a finite number of bumper stickers so they will go to the first 175 – 200 who send me an address.

I hope you will join me in spreading this message — End This War!!

Hilary Apologizes?

Look at what Mr C found on the Daily Cos blog today!

“Well I’ve heard from a number of my friends and I’ve certainly clarified with them any misunderstanding that anyone had, because I disagree with General Pace completely. I do not think homosexuality is immoral. But the point I was trying to make is that this policy of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is not working. I have been against it for many years because I think it does a grave injustice to patriotic Americans who want to serve their country. And so I have called for its repeal and I’d like to follow the lead of our allies like, Great Britain and Israel and let people who wish to serve their country be able to join and do so. And then let the uniform code of military justice determine if conduct is inappropriate or unbecoming. That’s fine. That’s what we do with everybody. But let’s not be eliminating people because of who they are or who they love.”

The author of the blog goes on to say: (and I agree)

Sure would have been a lot better all the way around if that had been her initial reaction to the question. The kneejerk reaction to answer carefully and conservatively is becoming a hallmark of Clinton’s campaigning. I’m sure that this statement is the much more honest one, is much more reflective of who she is and what she believes. So why don’t we see more of that in her appearances?

I feel vindicated!!

My back is much better today. I think it is because I am not so worried about it and so I am not so tense.

I got some catch up done in the studio — working on Fragments and some new postcards and getting Square Dance ready to ship.

Mr C went to the cathedral to help cook and serve corned beef and cabbage to the residents of the low income housing project across the street. He just got home and he smells like cabbage!!

It is beautiful here in the Northwest! Have a great week-end
