Good Family Times

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

I have been busy hanging out with Jayme and Mark, who arrived on Sunday. We had a nice Easter dinner on Sunday night. On Monday night, we ventured out to Le Pigeon, a newish and much talked about new restaurant in SE Portland. The chef has a big imagination and a quirky food sense. He loves to use organ meats in strange ways. We had four starters – one was foie gras on banana bread with grilled banana and peanuts. It sounds bizarre, but it was quite delicious. My favorite was grilled scallops with tongue and a slaw. For my main course, I had grilled Arctic Char, celeriac slaw and oysters. One of the desserts was a cornbread cake with maple ice cream and caramelized bacon bits. It was fun and adventurous, but I don’t plan to go back any time soon.

Yesterday, Mark did some planning for my my backyard kitchen garden. The plans look fantastic. I can’t wait for it to happen. I will take a photo of the plans tomorrow and post it. It is too late tonight. I went to the airport to pick up Steph, Jack and M & M, back from North Carolina. They were tired from a long travel day so I just dropped them at home.

I am feeling like such the computer geek. I have spent a lot of time this week updating my website. I still have more to do. I also want to update my blog links. They are very out of date. I also had a lot of other web work to do for SDA and the church youth web pages. So my day was spent in front of the computer. All I needed was a bag of
Skittles and I would not have had to come upstairs!!

The rest of the family had more fun than me. First, there was a scavenger hunt. Here are the lists of things to find.

Mark took photos of the excursion for me.

Mark & Jayme gave the kids some books. One was a cook book and so they decided to make a chocolate cake.

To top off the day, everyone pitched in and made pizzas for our supper.

It was a great day. I got lots of work done and still had my family around to entertain me.

Fired Up and Ready to Go

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

I spent the last two days getting stuff put away and cleaning up my office and studio after my 6 week online workshop frenzy with Liz Berg. I still have to do my final project, but I couldn’t even think in the mess I had created. Mr C came down and swept, vacuumed and washed the floors in my studio.

Yesterday, I went bopping out the back door to take Maggie for a walk and tripped over a package on the step. It was from my quilt daughter in Germany, Kristin. It contained a beautiful Polish pottery cross. It is not like any other I have in my collection so I was thrilled to see it. I also loved the card which was designed by Victoria Cole of Two Hand Design.

The family came over for dinner tonight.

I made another tagine dish. This was lamb with lots of Moroccan spices, butternut squash, carrots, peppers, onions and apricots. It was sooo good, served over couscous.

We had strawberries and grapes for dessert, accompanied by Waldmeister gummy gnomes, which were in the package from Kristin, for Mia and Miles. They have the flavor of woodruff, which is used in Germany to flavor May wine.

We have had lots of sun over the past week or so. It rained quite hard yesterday, but who cares when you get sun breaks, too.

Week-end Potpourri

Sunday, January 13th, 2008

It has been a lovely week-end in our part of the world. We got some short sun-breaks yesterday and a really lovely sunny afternoon, today.

Yesterday, I decided it was time to take the tagine for a test drive. So I called up Steph and invited the family to come for dinner.

For the uninitiated, these were developed by the nomadic people in the desert and worked like an oven on an open fire. I decided to make chicken with apricots and almonds. First, you mix cinnamon, ginger, turmeric, salt and pepper. Add a couple of tablespoons of oil and coat the chicken pieces.

Brown the chicken in the tagine base.

Slice onions and make a little bundle of cilantro and parsley.

onionsherbs.jpg

Then brown the onions.

Add the chicken and the herbs and some water. Cover and let it cook. While it cooks, prepare a mixture of honey and water and cook the dried apricots in it until the sauce thickens. Add it to the chicken and cook some more. Then sprinkle it with toasted almonds and serve over couscous. I served peas as a veggie. It was really, really good. I made brownies for brownie sundaes. Mia says, “Grandma wouldn’t give us WW brownies!” Yes, she would and she did. They were very tasty – just small so I gave the non-dieters two. I had nonfat frozen yogurt and they had very rich vanilla ice cream.

Before I did all that cooking, I took a walk during the 4 pm sun break and took my camera. See, here is the blue sky!

The main reason I took my camera was to get a photo of this. The photo does not do the site justice. It really looks cool.

It is a construction fence that snakes across the woodsy canyon on the Reed College Campus. They are building a pedestrian bridge across the canyon to the new dormitories.

The morning paper had an article about an art show opening at Marylhurst University. The artist, Leonard Rudder, has an interesting story. He was an art school graduate from the north east who moved here in 1950. He was involved for a short time with the art community and then just faded away. He worked as a custodian at an elementary school. He didn’t stop painting, but he stopped showing his work. Two years ago, the curator of the show went into the basement of this now 90 year old man and found a treasure trove. We loved his work. It was all very abstract and quite wonderful. Here is one of the pieces that I scanned from the catalog.

After our art date, we went to the mall and did a little shopping. I scored some brown corduroy jeans, a sweater and a couple of cotton tees. Mr C found nada.

Early this morning, we were awakened by flashing lights on the street behind our house. Another car had missed the curve and driven up on our parking strip. This one was pretty bad. The old van was crunched against one of our big fir trees. We never heard the crash or sirens, but there were several police cars and a wrecker moving the car by the time we were aware of the situation. I couldn’t go back to sleep so I am going to go night night now and catch up on my sleep.

Powering Up

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

I want to get back to a normal mode of life, but today was not quite there. We didn’t go to church because we needed to take Lisa to the airport. First, we washed a lot of dishes which we could not face last night. Mr C washed; I dried and put away.

Then, with a sun break beckoning, we went for our first 40 minute walk in over a week.

We got back just in time to scarf down some leftovers and hop in the car to head to the airport with Lili and Willfredo ensconced in his little carry on bag.

We left the airport on the north side of Portland and headed south toward Tualatin to exchange my new rain jacket for a more Gericon color. I wanted the rusty brown, but alas it was gone so I settled for blue. I hear that blue iris is the Pantone selection for the color of 2008. My jacket is sort of a lighter shade.

While we were driving around, the skies opened up and it started pouring. At the airport, lightening struck the plane Lisa was to take, while it was sitting at the gate. She hastily made her way to the desk and got a flight to Oakland and stayed on schedule.

Back at home, I spent some time catching up on my blogging community and e-mails. I looked for recipes on line for use with my gift from Steph and Jack:

tagine.jpg

I found recipes for lamb and sweet potatoes and chicken and veggies and chickpeas. I can’t wait to cook up something Moroccan.

Tomorrow, I need to send Indigo Moons to the Carnegie Art Center in Indiana for the Form Not Function show so I used my new power tools to make a slat for hanging.

newtooltoys.jpg

That little power saw was on my Christmas wish list and Mr C came through. It came with a screwdriver/drill and a flashlight. I feel so independent, now. I can never find his tools, and I hate asking and waiting. Tonight, I sewed the sleeve and it will be off to the show tomorrow. I just have to e-mail an artist’s statement.

I also started thinking about what I will do with this piece of fabric.

artclothchallengefabric.jpg

I received this from Jane Dunnewold for the Art Cloth Challenge II. I get to add some additional surface design to this and send it back mid-February. I am not allowed to show you what I do with it, but I will blog about it, and you will have to use your imaginations!! It is silk that has been dyed with mixing blue. It was tied with some rubber bands and scrunched in a stocking. Everyone got the exact same fabric so it will be fun to see the final results. Before I do any other surface design, I want to overdye it, possibly with orange. Does anyone know what color I will get? Or maybe yellow.

Tonight, we had more leftovers. They were even better today. Tomorrow, I am going to put the leftover sweets in small baggies for the homeless lunch program. They need the calories more than I do.

The Party’s Over. . .

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

It’s time to call it a day. I am pooped, but not a party pooper. We had a great time gathering our various friends and neighbors together for a fun time of eating, drinking and conversation

I was too busy to take many photos. Here are a few shots of the party preparations. Lisa made some menu cards:

Of course I prepared too much food, but you don’t want to run out. I just won’t have to cook again for a few days. I also loaded Steph and Jack up with leftovers.

Mia said it was her first grown up party and her best because her best friend Madeline came. Here are my girls with Steph’s friend, Jennifer (Madeline’s Mom) and our realtor, Cynthia.

I am looking forward to the new year, doing some new work and a visit from Kristin, next week.
