Discharging Crows

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

I am working on a small 6 X 6 inch piece for a fund raiser for the Portland Audubon Society. Around 100 artists sign up and get a 6 x 6 canvas from Art Media and then create a work of art with a bird theme. They are for sale at the  Wild at Art show in November.

I got this idea to do a crow by blocking out the crow with a freezer paper cut out on black fabric and then discharging the color around it. I used a chlorine based gel cleanser.

I now have to sandwich and quilt it. I want to put a bright colored berry in his mouth – not sure what color.

Here is my fiber sketch for today. I call it leftovers because I made it from leftover scraps. (Editors note: blogging late last night, I forgot the photo!!)

I forgot to mention that I bought a piece from the SAQA auction by Sue Dennis from Australia. It is monoprinted on whole cloth. It was selected for the Quilter’s Guild of NSW 2010 Calendar and appears as the quilt for July. I can’t wait until it arrives.

Surface Design Day

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

The washing machine finally gave up spinning last night and I was able to iron my discharged fabric and love the results. The three hand-dyed fabrics are just fabulous.  All the photos are clickable to be seen larger.

I love the piece on the right.

The fabric on the left and the right (in the upper photo) were over-dyed via the microwave. I squirted black and brown dye on each one and processed in the microwave for two minutes. Here is the result. I am thrilled with this. Very complex and mysterious.

The second piece in was over-painted with diluted brown paint. I love this, too.

Here are fabrics that I was auditioning for the big piece. Today, I over-painted them with diluted black and brown paint.

These two may need an additional over-painting job. I want them to look dirty and distressed!

I having some fabric batching overnight. One has 3 greens with some black splashes.

I had some brown dye left over so I used an ugly green/blue hand-dyed cotton. It will be fun to see what happens to it.

I am whooped from a day of dyeing and painting. I am taking the night off to watch ice skating. Tomorrow, I hope to start fusing and cutting and designing my BIG quilt.

Discharging Dye

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Today, I decided to add some marks to some of my hand-dyed fabric by removing some color with thiox discharge paste. I am posting before and afters before I threw them in the washing machine. My washer is not spinning tonight so you will have to wait to see the final product tomorrow. I am going to over dye some of these.

It is always exciting to see what color will emerge from the black hand-dyed fabrics. I used bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard, a sponge and some large stamps with random dots and lines to make the marks. And I was dressed for safety:

By the way, I chose the lime green accented postcard. I thought that would be an easy guess for everyone!!

Still Going In Shibori Circles

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

I have made some progress on this piece. I also made a mess in my studio, auditioning my hand-dyed fabrics for the background. Everything is pinned on the design wall so it is still very much a work in progress. I think it will be a fun piece and the quilting should go very quickly on this as I will do simple lines.

I spent a lot of time today moping around, not feeling very good. I am dealing with the clogged sinuses and vertigo. I also think I am having some problems related to a change in my thyroid medication. I have taken dessicated natural thyroid for years and the lab that made it can no longer get the stuff and has changed the formula. It is a big deal for those of us who found relief from the natural type. I can barely get out of bed in the morning and I am freezing cold all the time even with layers of clothes. I took a nice long walk with Scooter in the sun today, which made me feel better.

While moping, I got a quite a bit of hand stitching done on the silk circles. I am really loving that piece.

I bought some black fabric at Walmart (ugh) the other day. It discharged with chlorine to this very lovely color. I have to try it with thiox, now.

The Compost Post (not heap)

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

I spent some time today looking into devices for composting kitchen and yard waste for my farm. I spent the afternoon checking out some local sources – most are out or didn’t have what I wanted. So back home to the computer. I ordered this for the backyard:

This turns so that you can continually mix up your compost stuff.

This lovely will reside in the kitchen to collect waste to go down to the composter. It has a carbon filter in the lid to cut down on odors (I hope) I’m hoping that having something this attractive will encourage me to save the garbage and get it into the composter.

This morning I also did some work on my 12 X 12 challenge. I auditioned some fabrics, but I think I need to dye some colors that I am missing. I also finished the Photoshop design that I will use.

Tonight, I discharged one of the pieces from the shibori class. I wrapped it on a pvc pipe and sloshed on some Sunlight Dishwasher detergent. It discharged the outer edge so I washed and dried it and wrapped it the other way. It now looks like this:

The photo is not that great as I took it in the kitchen just now. It looks better than this. Here is a thumbnail of the fabric before I went at it with bleach.
