A Quicky

Thursday, October 25th, 2012

i have been busy, busy, but not so much in the studio. I took on the job of Constant Contact newsletter editor for my guild, Columbia FiberArts Guild. Since I do this for SDA, several times a week, it is not a problem, except for gathering the information. The person who originally volunteered for the job, found CC, too difficult for her to manage, and so we were late getting out the October edition. I had to get on it yesterday and get it done. It went out this morning.

My other activity is updating my website which has been neglected for too long. I thought that before the magazine article comes out next month, I should have all my newer work on the blog. I am making progress, but it is slow.

Today, I took some me time to meet with the STASH group at Suzy’s house. She made us a fabulous lunch – vegetarian. It was fun to sit and chat with my friends.

Back at home, I worked on a new Constant Contact newsletter for SDA which will go out to the whole membership next week. That has lots of finessing to be done.

Tomorrow, my plan is to get some serious studio time in.

Today’s 3 x 3. (October is a long month!)

Knit One, Purl One

Saturday, October 13th, 2012

Some of my readers may remember when I started this sweater for Paige, months ago, before she was born! I used to knit – a lot! Now, I can knit for just so long and my hand gets numb so it has taken be a while to finish this. I hope that she will be able to wear it for a couple of months, at least. I just have to assemble it, wash and block it before I fly down to visit her on Thursday. I ran out of yarn when I was binding off the hood. Fortunately, I was at a meeting near the yarn shop so I stopped and bought another skein.

I think these baby Ughs and the leg warmers will look cute with the sweater.

I had a fun day with M & M yesterday. Miles had to leave early to go to a birthday party so Mia and I had lunch and went shopping at Target before I took her home.

Today, I had a Trinity Arts strategy session from 9 until 1:30. It was great to just share ideas and sort of dream of what could be and feel good about what we are doing well.

Tonight we went to the symphony. The conductor was a 24 year old adorable guy from Uzbekistan. He was very good, especially with the Tchaikovsky piece.

I did manage to keep up with my 3 X 3’s

I received yet another birthday gift from Judy Carpenter yesterday, a signed copy of Lisa Kirpoe’s book, Visual Texture of Fabric. Can’t wait to use it.

Breast Pockets

Thursday, October 4th, 2012

I spent most of my creative time today making breast pockets for Melanie Testa’s project. Melly underwent a double mastectomy last year and chose not to have reconstruction. She has developed a relationship with many women who have chosen to be “flatties.” She is using the idea of the shirt pocket, also called breast pockets to make an artistic statement about breast cancer and deciding to forego reconstruction. She has a reporter interested in doing an article if she can get 1000. She has enlisted all of her crafty friends to help. She needs the pockets by Oct. 22. You can read about the project here. I hope you will consider helping out.

I made my pockets out of some art cloth pieces languishing in a box in my studio. I have added a button and some simple embroidery. I will add the names of the people I am honoring — my sister Carole, Melanie and myself. I only get one pocket!

Here are my two latest 3 x 3s.

Super Saturday

Saturday, September 29th, 2012

Late this morning Mr C and I headed down to Newburg and had lunch at our favorite Oregon fast food restaurant, Burgerville. Then, he dropped me off at the Chehalem Arts Center for Regina Benson’s exhibit and lecture. He headed off for the Erath Vineyards to pick up our wine club edition for the fall.

Regina’s work is really breathtaking in its size and the detail she puts in to each piece.

I love the pieces that are hung on molded aluminum bars.

Her lecture was a slide show of photos showing how she does the discharge  and rusting on such large pieces. It was really educational. She was very generous with her information and gave each of us two swatches of fabric that had been discharged and rusted.

Here she is explaining to us how whe creates these tubes wrapped with shibori discharged silk.

Two views of discharged pieces hanging from the ceiling.

Tonight, Mr C and I had dinner with some old and new friends who were all connected via the old GE days. It was lots of fun.

Terry had an extra copy of Quilting Arts and so I have gotten to see my Rituals quilt of Scooter and Mr C in the magazine. It looks really great!!

I even found some time in the studio this afternoon and got some quilting done on the maverick piece. And did today’s 3 x3.

There are 3 months left in the year and I have yellow-green, blue-purple and yellow orange left to do. I am thinking I will go to the cool side next.

More Quilt Expo

Friday, September 21st, 2012

We had a Twelve rendezvous today when Nikki Wheeler arrived with her parents to see the exhibit. I spent most of the morning at the show hobnobbing with friends and fans. It was lots of fun. I did a little shopping and took some more quilt photos.

This quilt of Elaine Millar was supposed to be in yesterday’s post. It  is in the SAQA exhibit and one I like very much.

This quilt was full of details with felted critters and hand embroidery. It was quite fascinating.

I found this innovative traditional quilt very striking.

There was a special exhibit of quilts by the Portland Modern Quilt Guild. I have to admit that I don’t quite get this quilt movement. I do like some of the quilts they make – examples to follow – when they use simple forms composed on a white background. However, many of the quilts in this exhibit did not have that aesthetic – they were pieced blocks like many of the other traditional quilts in the show.

I figure that in a few years they will all be making art quilts and joining SAQA!

That is it for tonight.
