And The Winner Is

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

Kristin Freeman!  I need your snail mail. Diane will mail you the DVD later this month when she receives them from Interweave.

Thank you to the 65 of you who left a comment! You still have a chance by hopping on over to one of the other participating blogs.

On another note, today is my birthday. It will be very low key. Mr C took me to Toast for breakfast. Now, I am going back to quilting and burying threads.

I am also getting ready for my radio gig on Pat Sloan’s American Patchwork & Quilting Radio Show next Monday. I will be representing the Twelve x Twelve group and hoping I don’t embarrass them. Here is a link to listen in.

Digital Collage for Quilt Design

Monday, October 10th, 2011

Please do not leave comments. The drawing took place on October 12th.

Diane Doran is an award winning quilter who uses digital images in her quilts. She recently made a DVD about her techniques for Quilting Arts TV. You can see her beautiful work here.

Learn how to:

  • Combine a variety of image types to create imaginative collages to print on fabric
  • Use Photoshop Elements 9 for basic digital enhancement and layering techniques
  • Consider color, value, and contrast while designing
  • And she explains printing, basting, and finishing options for your collage, and demonstrates ways to enhance your design with quilting, markers, and pencils.
  • And much more!

Diane has given some of her blogging friends the opportunity to give a DVD away to one of our readers. So leave me a comment if you would like a chance to win this DVD. I will do a drawing on Wednesday.

If you don’t win one, the workshop will be available from Interweave for download sometime in mid October and in late October the DVDs can be ordered from Interweave.

Here are the other bloggers who will be giving away one of the DVDs.

Tacky, Tacky

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

Today, Terry and I worked on attaching the Twelve by Twelve quilts to felt panels for our exhibition at IQF in Houston. It was hot; we are not that young; we got back aches but managed to finish half of the quilts.

We are using a quilt basting gun to attach them to the felt.

We measured and placed four quilts to a panel by pinning on the right side, then flipped the panel over and used the tacking gun to attach through the back of the quilt.

Here is the fruits of our labor, packaged by theme in plastic bags.

We had some trouble with our basting guns. The first one I bought jammed and the needle broke after one test shot. I bought another which stopped working. It seemed as if something had come unhinged inside so I took it apart to see if I could fix it. Ha, ha!

So, while I kept pinning, Mr C, our hero, went to Michaels and bought another one. So far so good. The pink thing is the plastic tags that get shot into the fabric.

We are going to finish the other 12 color play quilts at our respective homes and then meet on Friday to pack them up and send them off to Houston.

SAQA Benefit Auction

Sunday, September 18th, 2011

Tomorrow the second group of quilts is available for $750 each. The price goes down each day, ending with $75 on Saturday. This is my offering – Klee’s Castles – which is unlike most of my work. I have always done something out of the box for the auction. I have always been honored to have my work purchased early in the bidding process. One year, I had a piece purchased on the first day. It is always nerve wracking for me.

Terri Stegmiller, who is one of the Twelves, has a cute bird that I love. The colors are so soothing.

There are a few luminaries of the fiber world in this group.

Art Collection Acquisition

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

I am so happy that I was able to purchase this lovely piece, String Poetry, by Wen Redmond from the SAQA auction. I have admired her work for a long time.

I was at guild this morning and then realised that I needed to ship a quilt to LaConner Quilt and Textile Museum by Saturday — oops. I had lost the e-mail with instructions, but Kathleen, the curator, sent me every thing I needed, and I dropped it off at Fedex and went to the Farmer’s market. When I got home, I checked in on the auction and saw Wen’s quilt sitting there without a buyer. I was thrilled to have a chance to purchase it. I hope to pick up one more this year.

I have put my text quilt on hold for a bit and am rehabilitating another piece. I will share what I am doing tomorrow.
