Out of Hibernation

I have lovely blog friends. This was gifted to me by Elisabeth B., one of my blog readers who ordered the Twelve by Twelve book. This is titled Lichen and uses a photo of the bridge at my beloved Rhodie Garden which she took on a trip to Portland. Everything in Portland had a layer of lichen or moss most of the year! I love it!

Mr C and I emerged from hibernation this week-end. Yesterday, we went to see The Lincoln Lawyer at our local movie theater. Today, in addition to church, we drove down to Dundee to the Erath winery for a private members event. We tasted wine and ate some yummy goodies.

Speaking of lichen, you have to love the chartreuse roof on this shed at the winery.

Here is our stach of wine, mainly pinot noir, that we brought home with us.

On the drive, I saw this sign which tickled me. Next time I am feeling blue, I think I will book some Joy!

I dyed some black fabric on Friday. I have always had problems with black and I was thrilled with my results. I used Dharma Jet black.

Tonight, I did some testing with deColourant discharge plain and metallic gold and used the heat gun. I am very happy with the results. This is before washing and after using the heat gun.

This is after I washed them. I think this will work very nicely for windows on my cityscape buildings.

Sunshine and Quilts

Sunshine and blue skies and an afternoon at a quilt show — could the day be any better? As Terry and I drove north and over the Columbia to Vancouver, there was not a cloud in the sky. We definitely needed our shades.

The women of the Clark County Quilters treated us royally, a delicious lunch and a prime spot to sign our books and show our colorplay quilts. Here is Terry:

That beautiful large poster was provided by Lark — very impressive.

The quilt show chair, Vonda, who is a little dynamo, gifted us with a cute brooch which she created with the help of Elinor Peace Bailey. Every vendor received one.

I bought the beautiful roving up there in the first photo. I think my next Twelve by Twelve quilt will be felted with these beauties.

The sun was still shining when we went out to dinner at 6:30 tonight. Imagine that, I needed sunglasses all day long.

A Two Meeting Day

This morning I attended the quarterly Columbia Fiberarts Guild meeting which included demos by four members and nice catered lunch. It is one of my favorite meetings of the year because we get to socialize and chat and share. In the afternoon, the SAQA area meeting met in the same place. It was almost meeting overload, but I do get energized when I spend time with other creative souls.

I am going to share some photos of the meeting today because I haven’t accomplished much except to unsew the bridges as I plan to start over with them.

This is Maris, our treasurer and felter, extraordinaire. Isn’t that a gorgeous piece of felted silk?

She did the bowls up above. Here is another shot.

Maris called this nebs. They are little loose pieces of wool that she adds to the felting.

Here she demonstrates how she makes a vessel by felting over a ball.

Carla makes amazing scrappy quilts by first stitching all of her scraps into a long strip. You can see a coil of sewn fabric on the table in front of her.

Betty demonstrated how she creates these gorgeous beaded bracelets.

 

At lunch, we were given a plain white paper placemat that we could decorate with these crayons. I should have taken a photo of the very creative work done at my table.

And, now to close, here are the adorable two guys that I live with. Scooter got a hair cut yesterday. He seems to feel more energetic without all that fur.

Messing Around

I finished my landscape for the next Twelve x Twelve reveal. Check that off the list!

Last night, I met Terry Grant for an early dinner and then we went to a High Fiber Diet meeting. We had a very interesting discussion about what makes a quilt art, finishing work for a show — sleeves, labels, etc. We also discussed the need to mount professional shows which means it sometimes does not seem fair because a lot of work does not make the cut.

I took a few copies our our new book and sold four of them. I have a link to buy an autographed copy in the menu on the right. Click on that and it will take you to a page and then to Paypal. I plan to include a piece of mini art with each book that is purchased.

That photo up there is one of the activities in a book that the STASH group is working through, Mess: the manual of accidents and mistakes.

It is  a wonderfully silly book. I have been way behind the others in the group and I did not want to show up tomorrow without something to show for it. For the exercise at the top, we were to slather the page with glue and drop small slivers of paper and let them land where ever.

For this page, we were to drizzle something sticky, such as glue or honey and then pour a powdery substance on it and blow or shake off the excess. Mine is glue and cocoa powder.

For this, we had to drop some ink or other color liquid and let it roll around the paper or do an ink blot. I did the latter.

This page has pomegranate juice poured from 5 feet above the page.

For me, this was just plain fun. I think it is a great way to loosen up and get rid of your inhibitions. I really had fun.

I am working on a big piece for a juried invitational show. I have the batting cut. I am working on creating some of Portland’s bridges on lutradur, which I will paint, once they are cut. Can’t say too much about this.

So, tomorrow, I am off for some fun with my STASH friends.

Too Tired to Post

But, here I am. These are beautiful felted ornaments that I won in the guild silent auction, yesterday. I think they will go to M & M for their tree. Yesterday was a whirlwind with two meetings during the day -Columbia Fiberarts Guild and Oregon SAQA. We had a very productive SAQA meeting, talking about how we can keep our momentum going. We have grown from 60 members to over 100 – almost double – in the past year.

Last night, the Leonard Cohen concert was like a spiritual and religious experience for me. I love the man. What can I say. All of his musicians are incredible. His lyrics are poetry to me. The man gave me so much energy and desire to be all that I can be. This 76 year old man skipped, every time he went on or off the stage. It was magical.

Today, I awoke to a very sad posting on Facebook by my sister. She said: “God give me strength to get through this.” My brother-in-law is slipping away, and we continue to sit on the edge of our seats wondering when he will leave us.

I almost stayed home, but did join my STASH friends for lunch. They really cheered me up – such a wonderful group of friends.

The bonus dessert was for Beth’s birthday – a Chocolate cream puff filled with chocolate goodness on a plate of caramel and whipped cream. We also had a peanut butter/chocolate concoction and something called Sin which had multi-layers of chocolate stuff.

I came home and crashed. Need a good night’s sleep. It is dark and gloomy with monsoon rains. We found a leak in the roof in the laundry room lavatory.  It looks like it is going to rain for a week. Ack! Calgon.take me away.
