Chillaxing

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

I had a very nice and relaxing day. My STASH group met at Terry’s and she made us a yummy lunch of Beer Cheese soup, homemade bread and salad. I got to see her beautiful Twelve X Twelve piece with the real leaf. Click here to see it. Terry said she thought it was a Cottonwood leaf. The back story is that she said she could not get gel medium or glue to stick to it to preserve it. I had heard someone say they used Golden gel medium to preserve leaves.

For my fiber sketch, I decided to give it a try. I grabbed a leaf from my studio patio and used gel medium to attach it to fabric and then globbed it over the leaf. I think it worked quite well. I sprinkled it with some gold glitter for a finishing touch. Before I send the sketchbook back to Brooklyn, I will make sure it is not falling apart.

I have been stitching away on my parallel universe piece.

I am stitching the largest planet in rainbow perle cotton. So, I am getting close to having half of the hand stitching finished. Then, I have to select embroidery thread for the parallel universe.

I also made some progress on straightening up my studio so that I can find space to create some new cloth to play with.

Better

I had a really good night’s sleep last night. I awoke refreshed and ready to tackle a few things in my life.

It is not all sunshine and roses, however. The day brought a disappointment and a sadness.

The disappointment is that I did not get juried into Form Not Function. Like Q=A=Q, I have been in this show before so I had an expectation that I might get in again. I received a very nice rejection e-mail and a list of those who got in. It is a smallish show so I am not that surprised that I did not get in.

The sadness was hearing from a friend that her husband has been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. It is devastating news. My friend, Dee, is not seeing much progress with her husband and thinks he is giving up. No news from my sister except that they have met with hospice and have that in place when it is needed. These 3 women and their spouses are often on my mind during the day. One of my friends said it is the curse of growing old — these events pervade your life.

I had fun making the fiber sketch today. I wanted to try something a little more complex. I also finished cleaning and reorganizing my studio kitchen. Now, I can tackle the studio so that I can get to work on some large projects that are on my mind.

Scooter loves to hang out in my office with me. If I am there working on the computer or sitting and doing hand-sewing, he happily stays with me. If I get up and go into the studio and start working, he comes in, checks out what I am doing and runs upstairs to hang out with Mr C.

Here is where he hangs out at night and when we leave the house for any length of time. He is such a good boy. He loves the chilly weather and seems to enjoy his walks more. Of course, he has that lovely coat that he wears all the time.

I am looking forward to tomorrow. STASH at Terry’s!

Life Gets Messy

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

This luscious little postcard arrived in the mail today. It is a lovely thank you gift from Kristin La Flamme. She is walking for Juvenile Diabetes to support her neighbor, and I made a donation.

I have been trying to get it together to get my studio cleaned and in order after the frenzied art making during the last month. I am teaching a shibori scarf dyeing class on Saturday so I started with my dye kitchen. I needed to wash out my dye squirt bottles and mix up some new dye. It felt really good to get in there and reorganize and sort and purge.

The beautiful day was marred by my worry for my sister and my friend, Dee, who often comments on this blog. My brother-in-law is losing his battle with leukemia. He was diagnosed a year ago August, and has been a good fighter through many set-backs. However, the leukemia cells are back with a vengeance and he can no longer have chemo. Dee’s husband has been in the hospital since August with failing kidneys and all sorts of problems. She keeps us posted on her blog, and each post brings me to tears. I know that this is an emotional roller coaster for her.  I am at an age where the people I know and love are more prone to these things, but it is still difficult.

My sketchbook is almost filled to the brim. Here is my latest sketch. The pink and green appealed to me for some reason.

Seeing Red

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Driving home from the STASH gathering today, we saw a stand of trees with gorgeous fall color which inspired tonight’s fiber sketch. I took the photo as Reva was whizzing through the intersection.

We had a great time at Suzy’s home. Suzy is fairly new to our group so we had not met there, yet. It was a visual treat. She has lots of Japanese and Asian items in her home. She is not afraid of color and she loves red as you will soon see. I should have taken a photo of the living room rug which had gorgeous red flowers.

Here is Suzy in her kitchen.

She made us a fabulous lunch, served in red dishes.

She had made the quilted placemats:

She said she bought the Wolf range because of the red knobs:

And there is a red microwave and glass tiles to match.

And even red cabinet doors!

We had a good time. I always love sharing stories with my friends. Beth was just back from 3 weeks in Europe and had fun stories to share.

Tomorrow, I think I have my first stay at home day this week. I hope to get started on my Rusty piece.

I leave you with a very sleepy puppy.

Slow Start

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

I started the day rather slowly, curled up with the lap top, doing SDA work, reading blogs and Facebook. I did run over to the Post Office to pick up my latest acquisition from the SAQA auction. This piece is by Natalya Aikens. It is really exquisite.

I also took Scooter for a walk. It was such a beautiful, almost balmy, fall day. After lunch, I roasted the latest bunch of cherry and Roma tomatoes that I harvested yesterday. All of a sudden, it was 3 pm.

I decided to get down to the studio to pack up stuff for our High Fiber Diet meeting tonight. I felt the need to do something constructive so I vacuumed up the glitter I spilled over a week ago. Then, I grabbed the quilt that I needed to touch up with paint because it had some fading problems. I was a little nervous, but I matched the color really well and it was actually fun. It has a layer of tulle over the silk, so I can not heat set it. I will let it dry for a couple of weeks and then spray it with an ultra-violet light protectant.

Then, I was off to pick up my organic farm produce for the week. I have tomatillos and jalapeno peppers. There will be salsa!! I also got Brussels sprouts leaves (have never cooked those), turnips, beets, garlic and other goodies.

I met Terry Grant at a Mexican restaurant for a quick supper before out High Fiber Diet meeting. We had a packed house. Our group is growing be leaps and bounds – very exciting. One of our new members, Wendy Mamattah, shared her work tonight. She is originally from Ghana. I particularly like this quilt about the Masai.

Tonight, after the meeting, I was dorking around on the computer and watching Dancing with the Stars when I decided to do a quickie fiber sketch from some scraps I had on the cutting table. It is up a the beginning. I call it Deconstructed Fence.

Lastly, here is another birthday gift. This gorgeous glass ring from my daughter, Lisa.

And so, I ended up having a quite productive day!
