Back to Business

Wow, it has been more than a week since I have done a fiber sketch. I grabbed some scraps and came up with this simple composition that reminds me of autumn.

We arrived home from California on Saturday evening — exhausted and happy that we had spent some great time with family and friends in San Francisco. I think I need one more good night’s sleep to get the energy to get caught up with stuff.

Yesterday, we drove out to the farm to pick up Scooter. It was a beautiful day for a drive to the country. I snapped this photo of Mt Hood. Looks like it is time for snow – Mt. Hood is getting bald.

Today, we stood in line to get our flu shots. It was the first day that Kaiser offered them so there was a pretty long line, but I entertained myself with my iPhone and the time passed rather quickly.

My good friend, Judy from Georgia, sent me a package for my birthday with these two goodies — one of her beautiful scarves and a sand timer with lime green sand.

I just love the colors that Judy put into this scarf – can’t wait to wear it.

PIQF Report

As we were driving away from my son’s hood, I took a photo of this cool mural across the street. He lives in the Mission and many residents are of Mexican heritage. When I walk around the neighborhood, I know what it is like to not look like most people you encounter. I never am afraid. I love the whole scene.

I met Liz Berg at the Pacific International Quilt show between 10:30 and 11. Mr C was coming back at 3 so I didn’t have a lot of time to see the amazing array of quilts.

I bought some beautiful hand-dyed silk/cotton from my friends from Sonoma County (no website – I learned to dye from Judy and Carlene). I learned to dye from them. I also bought some of Judy Robertson’s lovely fabric. I also bought a couple of garments from Ananse Village

Here are some quilts that caught my eye, that I remembered to photograph.

I always love Noriko Endo’s quilts. She creates the landscape with small bits of fabric then it is covered with tulle and machine quilted. She gets a very organic and realistic landscape.

Loved the colors and geometry of this. The intersecting lines look trapuntoed.

This is a Carol Taylor quilt. That is Liz looking at it. We thought this seemed like a new direction for her. I really liked it.

I know Betty Busby through FaceBook. She does wonderful scenes of the natural world. It was great to see one of her quilts up close and personal.

Of course I loved this quilt  by Patti Morris from Canbadawhich is another take on Aspens in the fall. A really nice composition.

You need to click on this to see it better. It is the Russian River done by the art quilt group that I started in Santa Rosa, The Pointless Sisters. It makes me so happy to see that they are still going strong. This was designed by Linda Morand and each member did a section with the rivers connecting.

I forgot to take photos of the High Fiber Diet show. I was having too much fun running into old friends and catching up.

Tonight, Mr C and I walked to a nearby Italian restaurant for dinner. Mark and Jayme were invited to the home of one of her professors at Berkeley, where she is in an elite program with only 16 students. Half the class was invited tonight.

I am very tired. Time to call it a day!!

Indian Summer Glorious Day

Today, four members of STASH, drove out through the Columbia Gorge and across the river to the Washington side to visit the Maryhill Museum of Art. It sits up on a bluff above the river with nothing else around. This was my second visit. It has an eclectic collection of things ranging from incredible chess sets to French Fashion Dolls an every thing inbetween.

The drive was gorgeous – not a cloud in the sky – everything was sparkling.

After passing through the verdant gorge, on the eastern side, you are suddenly in the high desert landscape dotted with windmills. I love the juxtaposition of the windmills and the natural sculpture of the hills.

We are usually greeted by the peacocks in the parking lot, but we didn’t see one until we sat down to have lunch.

I will show you a bit from each of my favorite exhibits. They have an extensive collection of Native American crafts and utilitarian objects. These are storage cases made from painted rawhide.

There are lots of gorgeous baskets.

There are several vignettes of 1/4 size fashion dolls dressed in outfits designed by french fashion designers.

I think my favorite place is the sculpture garden:

I have a ton more photos which I will upload to Flickr some time when I have a moment.

Here is my thrown together fiber sketch made from scraps from the discharged crows. I finished the crow which I need to adhere to the canvas. I want to paint it black, first. I couldn’t decide how to made a berry for his mouth. I ended up felting one.

For now, I am a tired old lady and am off to bed.

Good Day Monday!

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

It was a beautiful Oregon summer day. I tore out the old lettuce and cilantro which had seen better days. I planted new lettuce and spinach starts. I got myself cleaned up and went to the post office to mail Jane’s book to Brooke in Montana. Then, I picked up my friend Reva and we met up with Beth and Terry at the Oregon College of Arts and Craft for lunch at their wonderful cafe which makes great home style lunch fare. We had hoped to see the exhibit in the gallery, but they were installing a new show today. We had a great time sitting in the sun and talking.

I dropped Reva at home and picked up Mr C and we drove out to our local mall and did some shopping for our trip back east. I found some great deals (40, 50 and 60% off). We stopped at the big box pet store and stocked up on goodies for Scooter to enjoy while we are gone.

I finally made it into the studio tonight and made another black/red study for the Sketchbook Project.

I also started the satin stitching on the aspens. It is boring and tedious, but I turn the tv up nice and loud and stitch away!

It was a great day. Hope you had one, too.

Social Butterfly

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

I have been flitting here and there — attending meetings and hanging out with friends.

And when I am home, I have been finishing up the studio spring cleaning. The cleaning is pretty much done except for my office.

I didn’t want to get to off track with the Sketchbook so I went down to the studio tonight to come up with an idea. I was brain dead!! I just started cutting up some black fabric and decided to do a wonky grid with a punch of red. Not very elegant or creative, but it was fun.

I had a guild meeting last night. Our guest speaker was Jiseon Lee Iabara who is Fibers department head at Oregon College of Arts and Craft. She does amazing pieces using Korean Pojagi.

Today was STASH at Reva’s house. She prepared a fabulous lunch. It was Gale’s birthday and another quilter/fiber artist joined us. It was delightful.

After lunch, Mr C and I drove down to Dundee in the Oregon wine country to pick up our wine club shipment. It was rainy, but still a pretty drive.

We had missed picking up our wine for the last 3 times so we had a lot of good wine to bring home.

Tomorrow, I am off to lunch and an art date with Reva and Anita Kaplan who is in town visiting her daughter. Reva used to live at Sea Ranch in Mendocino County where Anita lives. If you are not familiar with Anita’s work, click on her name and check out her fantastic art quilts.

By Saturday, we are supposed to have sunny days and temps in the 80s. This morning the weather man said we better enjoy the rain while it lasts. Ha!! What a sense of humor.
