Follow Your Bliss

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

On the Quilt Art list, members are selecting a word for 2010 — a word to frame and focus their work. I chose Bliss as in Follow Your Bliss as espoused by Joseph Campbell.

Joseph Campbell was a life-long student and teacher of the human spirit and mythology–not just the mythology of cultures long dead, but of living myth, as it made itself known in the work of modern artists and philosophers–individuals who searched within themselves and their societies to identify the need about which they were passionate. He called this burning need that they sought to fulfill their bliss. — From the Joseph Campbell Foundation website.

I want my work to be passionate and meaningful and true to me.

I made this little piece to hang in my studio to remind me. It also was made for the Fast Friday Fabric Challenge. This month, we were to take a label or an ad from a magazine and use the colors in a landscape or still life.

I found this new item at Trader Joe’s this week and was immediately attracted to the colors and the graphic design which was very quilty looking. The fresh color scheme of greens, yellows, orange with a punch of black and white really appealed to me. You can see that I used some of the shapes in my abstract landscape. I have lots of prefused scraps so it didn’t take long to put this little piece together with some simple quilting lines.

Yesterday, I met Terry and Karen, two twelves, for breakfast. Karen was in town for a family wedding. We had a great time chatting about life and the book. They had cameras and got photos, but I didn’t  – imagine that? – me without a camera.

In the afternoon, I put away Christmas. I have Columbia Fiberarts Guild board meeting here in the morning and thought it was best to get every thing put away so that Mr Clean could do his thing.

It was nice to go to church this morning and find that Christmas was still going strong — evergreen trees, poinsettias and wreaths on the windows. We sang Christmas carols because it is still Christmas until twelfth night.

ropedyedscarves

Today was Some Thursday at Someones House (STASH), except we went to the Pittock Mansion and out to lunch, instead. I wanted to give my friends scarves as gifts. This morning, I decided to do two more. These are silk chiffon which I wrapped around a thick rope and then squirted with chartreuse, turquoise and black. I rinsed them in water and threw them into the dryer with a towel. While I got dressed, they dried and were ready to wrap.

The Pittock Mansion sits way up on the western hills. Reva and I live over on the east side of Portland, across the Willamette river. We met Beth, Gale and Terry at the mansion because they live over in the western hills. Here is everyone waiting in the cold for the mansion to open.

I was not particularly enamored with the overdone interior decorator holiday decor, but I loved seeing this beautiful building which has fabulous views. Here is Mt Hood from the mansion.

I was enamored with this shower which is the precursor for the modern day multiple shower heads.

Some photos that I took.

We went to the Chart House which sits up on a hillside with a panoramic view of  the Willamette and the East side of Portland and beyond. There is Mt. Hood, again. My house is down there someplace.

It was a great day with friends. I came home and made Mr C a stew of beef, mushrooms, onions and brown rice with a fabulous stout from a brewery in Eugene. It added a wonderful richness to the stew. I made broccoli to go with it.

I finally dragged myself into the studio at 9 pm and watched The Office and 30 Rock while I got some quilting done on the pink piece. I have to finish it tomorrow, but first, we are going to take Scooter out to the boonies to cut down a Christmas tree.

delterry

Del Thomas is in Portland for a short visit and Terry and I met her at Starbucks. We talked and talked and talked. It was a great visit.

Otherwise, today has been a bust. I realized that I really have to redo my pink piece. It just isn’t conveying what  had in mind.  I don’t think it will take too much work. I will feel better about it.

Tomorrow, M & M have no school so Steph is dropping them off in the afternoon. We are taking them to the OMSI planetarium Holiday Laser show. They will spend the night as mom and dad are going to a party without them. If we have time, we might make some Christmas Cookie ornaments.

And now for something cute:

assertivedraw1

Today, I persevered at the working with flux nonobjectively. Above, is the first assertive drawing. I place the 3 ft X 4 ft paper on the wall and then attack it with charcoal and crayon. I enjoy this part. Next, is the obliteration with white paint. I was working with lines and pods, today. All images are clickable.

Then, I went back in with charcoal and crayon – making more marks.

I added more paint and more charcoal. This was the final piece with a detail, following.

I did another, smaller piece. The first drawing:

The next workshop in the book is objective drawing.

Look what I received in the mail yesterday. I was the recipient of this lovely postcard made by Dale Ann Potter when she did a drawing after reaching her 500th follower for her Facebook fan page.

We had a typical November day — rain, sunbreaks, and more rain. Mr C, Scooter and I got caught in a pretty good down pour this morning. My new umbrella from Lisa came in very handy.

nonobjectiveflux

So, tonight, I decided to get back to my Expressive Drawing program with Steven Aimone. This workshop was called working with flux nonobjectively. This is an exercise of asserting and obliterating, marking and veiling. You begin by doing the expressive drawing technique, but stop intermittently and obliterate portions with white paint. The drawing is done with charcoal and crayon. I think I was not aggressive enough with the veiling/obliteration so I will do another of these. You can click on it to see it larger which shows the layering created by the obliteration of some areas.

I have to keep reminding me of the things that Steven says makes drawing easier:

  1. Be kind to yourself
  2. Don’t worry about being perfect
  3. Set reasonable expectations
  4. Enjoy the process
  5. Don’t overthink things
  6. Challenge assumptions
  7. Ignore uninformed feedback
  8. Find community

I had a fun day out and about with my friends in the STASH group. The first quilt shop we went to was beautifully done in an historic old building. It had beautiful traditional fabric with a few modern prints and a very nice collection of Kaffe Fassett. I didn’t buy any fabric, just some thread, a sealing iron and these beautiful hand-dyed embroidery threads

handdyedembroiderythread.

We then headed for another fabric shop which had batiks. I bought these.

And this remnant for quilt backs. It has four prints in one piece.

Next door was Tap Plastics. We had some fun poking around. I bought 3 different squeegees for my screenprinting.

After a good lunch together, we called it a day.
