So Much Stuff

chester

Meet my new best friend, Chester the three legged cat. He belongs to M & M and their family, but while they are in NC, I get to go to their home and pamper him. He didn’t want me to leave today. He lost his leg when he was a kitten. It got caught in the neighbor’s chain link fence. He is amazing and fearless.

I don’t have many pictures, but lots of things to write about. Sorry. We have good news and bad news for our family right now. The good news is that my son Mark and Jayme are going to get married. They want to do a quiet ceremony at the courthouse in San Francisco. Then, both sides of the family will descend on Portland on a week-end in the middle of September. We will have several different events. Mr C and I are hosting a catered dinner here at our house on Friday night. I still have to meet with the caterer. It will be fun to have the west coast family join us in meeting Jayme’s family. Mark’s Godfather, Mr C’s youngest brother, is coming from Florida. Here is the happy couple in a photo I took last year when they were visiting us.

The bad news is that my BIL, husband of my sister, Jean, was just diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He starts aggressive chemo tomorrow and will be in the hospital for a month. Jean says that he had no symptoms. He has had bi-pass surgery and was having his annual round of tests when they found it. We are hoping for a complete recovery, but it is going to be a long and arduous haul for the family. It is hard to be across the country at a time like this.

On the positive health side, Mr C saw the urologist, and they confirmed that he does not have cancer — a lingering fear that we had. He will go in to have prostate surgery after the big event in September. And me? Well, I am doing the clear liquids tomorrow for my 5 year colonoscopy on Monday. I feat that I will be out of commission for at least 24 hours. Unfortunately, Lisa arrives in Portland for a week while I am at the hospital, but our sweet Amy Ruppel will pick her up and take good care of her and Wilfredo until I am back home.

I told you I had stuff.

Here is some more stuff on my mind. My dear friend, Karen Davis, aka Karoda, lives in Louisville. They just had flooding from torrential rains. She has her workshop/studio in the basement of her parent’s home and suffered very bad flooding. She lost her journals, computer, art books. She thinks she can wash the fabric stash and salvage most of it. I told her that I wanted to help her get every thing back that she lost. She promised that I can help with whatever the insurance does not cover. If you are interested in helping Karen, e-mail me or leave a comment. I will get in touch with you when she is ready to get set up again.

Here is another project that you can participate in: Iraqi Bundles of Love. My virtual art quilting daughter, Kristin’s husband, is in the US Army in Iraq. He has come up with an opportunity to participate in a wonderful project.

The basic premise is to make a bundle of fabric and sewing supplies from your own stash, mail it to her husband’s APO (American) address, and he will facilitate the distribution of the bundles. By bundling the goodies, it saves time on his end as he won’t have to redistribute the supplies or use excess packaging for them, and it makes it far simpler for his local counterparts to distribute them to those in need.

Go to Kristin’s blog to get all of the details.

There you have it. Next time, I will have photos of the redo we have been doing in our guest bathroom, the one with the vintage pink and turquoise decor. It is looking fantastic and has kept Mr C, the painter, very busy.

Just Sitting Around…

machhinequiltinggirlquilt

with this! I have spent a good part of the day doing straight quilting around my squares and along the seams using a purply pink variegated cotton thread. I haven’t quilted anything this big in a long time, but it is coming along.

As promise, Kristin has posted a photo of the Illuminate Aspens. My daughter, Lisa, made some birds for Kristin a while ago, using some of the same indigo fabric that Kristin gave me, that I used in her quilt. So they are hanging out together in Kristin’s living room. You can see a photo, here.

lizbergart

Today was an ordinary day and yet extraordinary. It was a day of tackling mundane tasks and working in the studio punctuated by special events. One of those was the arrival of the piece above, made by Lizzie Berg. She is going to Africa with some kids from her church and to raise funds, you could make a donation to her church and receive one of her works of art. That was a no-brainer for me. This is disperse dyed on to polyester and then quilted on to timtex and then mounted on to the cotton and attached to stretcher bars. The photo does not do it justice. I love it.

I got the machine quilting done on the passion piece and, tonight, I started adding my special handmade embellishments. I also got all the cutting done for the little girl quilt. I love planning how fabrics will go together, mixing patterns and colors — it is one of the things I love about quilting. Tomorrow, I will start stitching.

Tonight, I got an e-mail that the above 12 x 12 piece was juried into Foto-Fiber-Fabulous which will be at Fiber Artspace in San Antonio in September. That makes me very happy.

I am just thrilled to have my energy back and to really enjoy my life again. I am missing my day with M & M this week. They have gone camping and will be home on Saturday and will show up here in the afternoon to spend the night as Mom and Dad are going to a concert.

Painting Fabric — Instant Gratification

splatterpaintcotton

Today, the STASH group painted fabric at Terry’s home. She has a blog post with some photos, too. This piece is my favorite of the day. I didn’t try to do sun printing with this. I painted a base of turquoise and then sponged on some royal blue. After that, I splatterd with a variety of other colors that were available.

My sun printing attempts fell flat. I think the paint was drying to fast because it was rather mild and breezy with no sun. Here are my attempts. My first was this green piece. Before:

After – nada.

This is a silk dupioni that I painted red. I did lots of reddish pieces that I might be able to use for the Passion theme for the next Twelve X 12 challenge. I put washers and jar lids on this.

After, with the companion piece which was painted and sprinkled with salt. I added some spatters of black. You can see a couple of faint circles on the piece on the left.

Here is a detail of the spatter piece.

I also painted some cheese cloth in reds and black. Looks quite passionate, don’t you think?

I had one semi-successful sun print. It was my last piece.

The next piece was painted with orange and blue. I wanted to get a brown color where they mixed. I sprinkled it with coral Setacolor. I like both sides of this piece.

Here is the nice setup in the back yard. We were under a canopy. That is Beth, Terry and Reva. Terry prepared a great lunch. The best part was spending the day with friends.

Saturday Fun

5dollarmicro

Here is the almost new microwave I got for five bucks today. Every June, our neighborhood has a huge garage sale. This is going into my studio for silk dyeing.  People come from far and wide. I have been suffering from one of those horrendous sinus headaches that I get. Yesterday, I didn’t do much except burn a CD to enter a fiber show with pieces that have photography in them. I got out a few pieces of fabric to start a new Aspen themed piece.

I was not sure how I would feel this morning. I was just finishing breakfast when M & M and their parents arrived to head out to the garage sales. I put on my shoes, put my coffee in a thermos and with Mr C and Scooter in tow, off we went.

I picked up a roll of heavy weight plastic in a free pile. I also got these big buckets for shibori dyeing for a dollar.

I couldn’t resist this sweet little print for five dollars.

We spent 5 hours, stopping for lunch along the way. Miles had saved up some money and got some great bargains. M & M selected some puzzles and games for us to have at out house.

After I recovered, I decided to head over to Reed College and check out the Art Fiberfest that has bee happening there the past few days. I found Nikki Wheeler who is one of the Twelves of 12 X Twelve. She was having a great time, having escaped the daily life as super mom.

I also got to meet Alma Stoller who was here teaching. She was delightful and I wish I had had more time to chat with her. Someone in the class wanted to know if I was the mother of the two famous sisters. Ha! Yes, my claim to fame — Lisa and Steph’s mom.

And so it was fitting that when I went to New Seasons to pick up take out for dinner, I saw this display of Lisa’s designs on prominent display!. This was taken with my iPhone and is not that great.

This photo taken of Mia with my iPhone, however, is quite good. She is growing up too fast.

I am whooped. Off to bed. G’night.
