Pop Art Identity

opartidentity

The Twelve by 12 group had the theme of identity for this month’s challenge. I had to get mine done early because of the trip to Kansas City. To execute this, I did a thumb print which I scanned and played with in Photoshop. I zoomed into the center whorl. I printed the patterns on Wonderunder and fused the pattern to the fabric and then fussy cut the pattern using small scissors and and Exacto knife. This was then fused to the complement fabric. I hand dyed the fabric and purchased matching thread so that the stitching would not interfere with the pattern. I flipped the thumbprint for two of the blocks to create the undulating pattern.

Here is a detail.

You can read more about it on the Twelve by 12 blog and see the amazing pieces done by the other 11. I am always so impressed with the thought that they put into their work.

Today I took a class on photography textiles. So, I have no photos!! But I learned a lot about my camera and using the manual setting and also about lighting a piece. I thought shooting work outside in the shade was sufficient, but no!! I will be getting proper lights, soon.

In lieu of my own photos, I will share a couple of photos taken by my adorable friend from Toronto — Anu. She is home now and e-mailed some photos she took. Here are the two of us, which she took to show her husband. I have loved meeting the young members, especially the student members.

A Great Day in KC

cryinggiant

The rain and clouds disappeared and today was absolutely delightful, despite the demeanor of the Crying Giant. I got to have an extra hour of sleep as I was given the morning off from the registration table. Yesterday was quite grueling as I had to stay in registration for most of the day and I missed some of the sessions. I did enjoy a picnic with every one on the lawn of the KCAI and dessert and the Vendor Fair at the Marriott.

Today we had a great speaker in the morning, Ray Materson, who started doing embroideries in prison using the yarn from athletic socks. He makes the tiniest most intricate scenes. He told his life story of becoming a drug addict and how the craft turned his life around. This afternoon, we took a bus to the Crossroads gallery district where most of the galleries had fiber art. What a treat. Here are Judy and Carol Soderlund waiting for the bus with me. I have enjoyed getting to know Carol.

Our first stop, after lunch with my new friends from Texas, we headed for the Belger Art Center. A huge space that held 4 of the SDA shows — the member’s show “Surface Matters”, Alice Kettle, Ray Materson, Jennifer Angus and an installation by an Asian artist, whose name has left me. It was a thrill to see my piece hanging in the Belger: (bottom right)

Here are some shots of the space:

And Natalya Aiken’s: (top left) I love this.

We took a freight elevator up to the third floor to see these pieces:

An installation of hanging consisting of tiny bits of found and recycled objects such as twist ties and bottle caps that are connected with bits of wire.

Alice Kettle’s amazing machine embroideries, all done from the back side.

And houses, a church and a school all bedecked with bugs. Amazing!

We arrived at the Cohen gallery just in time for Regina Benson’s talk. I am a big fan of her work and it was great to find out how she produces this beautiful stuff.

We also enjoyed the encaustic work of Daniella Woolfe:

And this exhibit – I forget the artist’s name. This was dyed and screenprinted scrim.

Back at the hotel, we enjoyed the member’s trunk show – some really beautiful work. Judy’s husband arrived this afternoon so I was left all alone. I joined some friends from my workshop last week and we had dinner at the Kemper Art Museum cafe. I must say that I had the best time that I have had since I arrived. We ate and drank and talked and laughed and I feel happy. I need to get some sleep – sorry for the lack of links. Night.

A Fun Day

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

I had a great night’s sleep. The Scooter dog slept until dawn. Such a good boy. I did a mad dash through the studio to straighten up before I picked up Sue Reno out at the airport. Terry came by and we pile in her car and headed out on an adventurous ride through the back roads of Oregon. We kept making wrong turns, but always ended up where we needed to be. Kind of like making an art quilt!!

Here is a photo of a glimpse of Karen Miller’s show. She cuts inticate stencils on mulberry paper and makes Katazome piece and other beautiful Japanese style work.

Here a couple of photos of Sue and Terry.

I didn’t do a very good job of using the camera today.

I got an interesting e-mail today.

I am writing to let you know that one of your photos with a Creative Commons license has been short-listed for inclusion in the seventh edition of our Schmap San Francisco Guide, to be published mid-June 2009.

The photo in question is a photo that I took in February and is posted on my Flickr account. It is this one taken in the butterfly exhibit at the Academy of Sciences Museum in Golden Gate Park.

I am pretty tickled to have a photo selected for something like this. I don’t get any payment, just credit because it is a free publication. Works for me. Of course, I only made the short list.

Sue brought me a wonderful piece of her art which I will share tomorrow if I have time. It is F & P time around here — finish and pack.

Home Again, Home Again

Jiggety jig. I am all rested and destressed after a couple of beautiful days at the beach with friends. I am still allergy plagued, but dealing with it.

Here is a photo synopsis of the trip. You can see all the photos HERE.

We had a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean, the beach and 3 Arches Rocks from our house on the hill.

Sunset on Wednesday evening.

Beth made some wonderful soup for us to have on Wednesday night. It was so good, we decided to stay in on Thursday night and have the leftovers and the snacks that we had brought with us. Here is the gang digging in.

I can’t show you what I did because I did more work on my 12 X 12 piece. Terry guessed what it was and she is doing the same thing, but it will be a different take. We, of course, stopped at the Tillamook Cheese factory for the requisite ice cream lunch before hitting the road for home. Mr C and Maggie were happy to see me. I took Maggie for a nice walk and Mr C and I went out for dinner where I ehjoyed roasted halibut – mmm good.

Heading West

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

STASH is off to the beach tomorrow for our annual April retreat. We are staying for a couple of nights and coming home on Friday. I am so up for some R & R that I am not even packing that much sewing to do. I will continue cutting the fabrics for my 12 X 12 piece. There is no Internet access at the beach house so I will be off line — hope I don’t go into withdrawal!! I am taking my computer, just in case I might pick up a wifi signal some place in the hood. The weather will be in the 50’s and partly sunny — I will be happy with that.

This is a photo of the guild showcase at the Contemporary Craft Museum. Guilds who are members of the museum get to showcase work at the museum. The Columbia Fiberarts Guild has work there through the end of May. That is my Indigo Moons hanging on the right.
