Took Me a Year…

Saturday, October 15th, 2011

to finish this quilt. The political scene last fall was making me feel as if I had awakened in an alternate universe where everything was upside down and in reverse. And thus was born this quilt. I used a freezer paper template to discharge the blue fabric. I began the saga of hand quilting all of the planets/moons in my fabricated universes. A few weeks ago, I decided it was time to get this done. Today, I finished it, despite feeling quite awful. I have a virus with fever, aches and chills.

Here is a detail:

I added a bit of bling by using glass beads in the rings around the largest planets.

It feels good to have finished this. Now, I am going to take another Aleve and go hope I feel better tomorrow.

Woman Working

Sunday, October 9th, 2011

I finished the seed stitching on this piece and have been working on the machine quilting. It is very slow going since I have to stop at each circle and then start again on the other side. It means stopping periodically to bury threads. I don’t normally work this way. It is tedious and may take as long to do as the handstitching.

To refresh your memory, I discharged this piece about a year ago. I used a freezer paper template and the two sides are in reverse and upside down. You can see how I did it here. I called it waking up in an alternate universe. It has taken me a year to seed stitch each of the planets and moons.

I am using a blue and yellow variegated thread to machine quilt in diagonal straight lines. I am liking the effect, but it is tedious.

So, that is pretty much what I have been up to for the last few days! I am determined to finish this.

Please come back tomorrow because I am going to be giving away something to one of my readers.

Jumping Back In

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

I have such a bad studio habit and time is getting away from me. I have so many deadlines and I am afraid of missing most of them. I know that if I just get to work, I won’t want to stop. I have an idea for a piece using text and handwritten words.

I tested different discharge methods on the background fabric and decided to use the metallic gold de Coulourant.

I taped the fabric to the table.

Then stenciled the letters –

The top photo is after I have almost finished heat setting the discharge. The words form the same sentence over and over with no spaces. Next time, I may reveal what comes next or maybe not!!

I haveĀ  a guild meeting tomorrow, and I really would rather be home working. That is a good thing.

I Love Surface Design

Monday, April 11th, 2011

It has been some time since I have had a block of time to create in my studio. I mean to create new surface on cloth. I had fun today creating fabric that can be used to build a cityscape.

I used a vinyl sink mat for a stencil. I think I forgot to take a photo of the fabric.

I used the side of a plastic berry basket for a grid with mustard(?) deColourant on a rust fabric.

It did not work really well – too much seepage. This is heat set, but not washed so it will tone down a bit. Has some possibilities.

I was searching around for something else to use as a grid and remembered masking tape! I have it in lots of sizes.

Here is the result, unwashed. I like it.

This was done with masking tape. I have heat set part of this so you can see how nicely the heat gun removes the color.

Here it is all heat set, but not washed.

I used a plain deColourant on this gray fabric and used a small square sponge to make the grid.

I like the brown cotton with gold metallic deColourant which is up at the top of this post..

I have to get my chartreuse quilts up on the Twelve by Twelve blog. Tomorrow is reveal day. Can’t wait to see what every one did.

Out of Hibernation

Sunday, April 10th, 2011

I have lovely blog friends. This was gifted to me by Elisabeth B., one of my blog readers who ordered the Twelve by Twelve book. This is titled Lichen and uses a photo of the bridge at my beloved Rhodie Garden which she took on a trip to Portland. Everything in Portland had a layer of lichen or moss most of the year! I love it!

Mr C and I emerged from hibernation this week-end. Yesterday, we went to see The Lincoln Lawyer at our local movie theater. Today, in addition to church, we drove down to Dundee to the Erath winery for a private members event. We tasted wine and ate some yummy goodies.

Speaking of lichen, you have to love the chartreuse roof on this shed at the winery.

Here is our stach of wine, mainly pinot noir, that we brought home with us.

On the drive, I saw this sign which tickled me. Next time I am feeling blue, I think I will book some Joy!

I dyed some black fabric on Friday. I have always had problems with black and I was thrilled with my results. I used Dharma Jet black.

Tonight, I did some testing with deColourant discharge plain and metallic gold and used the heat gun. I am very happy with the results. This is before washing and after using the heat gun.

This is after I washed them. I think this will work very nicely for windows on my cityscape buildings.
