Bamboo Fence 3 Ways and Ginkgo Leaves

Friday, July 20th, 2007

I decided that I want to make another Bamboo Fence piece. I took the photo (in my previous post) of the fence that my son took at the garden and made a screen. It was not very successful. I did have great success printing it on silk. This is after posterizing it in Photoshop. You can see it here with the background fabric I am auditioning and the bamboo that will be used to construct a fence on the piece.

So I found another bamboo fence that I played with in Photoshop and made another thermofax screen. This is much more successful. You can see the screenprint in two different colors on the top. The unsuccessful screen is on the bottom.

So I will use that on the back ground fabric with the photo collaged on top and construct a bamboo fence. Bamboo fence – 3 ways.

This morning while we were walking between the rain storms, I found a Ginkgo tree. I grabbed a little branch and brought it home. I taped the leaves to paper and scanned them.

After playing with it in Photoshop, I had this image:

I made a screen with the thermofax and here are my screen printed leaves. I have an idea percolating in my brain for using this image for another piece.

I hear that a lot of you are enjoying the wild rice salad recipe that I posted. Hi! Mary Lou in Massachusetts. She is the is the sister of my good friend Pat, in Santa Rosa. They are not only sisters; they are best friends. They talk to each other almost every day. They are both quilters and enjoy getting together for vacations. Anyway, Pat told me today, that she had talked to Mary Lou, who had made the salad and gave it her seal of approval. Now Pat is going to make it for her wine tasting group.

I had a great time with Mia yesterday. We shopped locally at the book store and toy store in Sellwood. Then she accompanied me on my shopping trip to Trader Joe’s. She is great company. I am always so impressed when I introduce her to adult friends. She is very polite and talkative — a real charmer!

bamboofenceframed.jpg

I decided that the best presentation for this piece was to wrap it around stretcher bars. Finished, it measures 12 X 24 inches. I faced the bamboo with a piece of turquoise fabric to give it more stability for stretching over the frame. I like the hint of turquoise showing through the burlap. I have only tacked it so that I could take a photo. I have to do a tighter stretch. I like how it looks and am anxious to move on to something else.

Here is a closeup:

This morning I wanted to print out a bamboo graphic so that I could make a thermofax screen. Oh, oh! I haven’t printed anything since I got my new Intel inside Mini Mac. It took me until mid-afternoon to finally get the new drivers installed and the computer to recognize the printers. It requires a restarting the computer, unplugging the printers, saying several curse words and eating chocolate to get everything to work nicely together.

Here is the result, once I got the printer to work. This is a test on muslin.

I am going to use this image to make some small simple quilts, combining the bamboo image with some antique Japanese textiles.

Making Thermofax Screens

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006

I think it was Kristin who asked me to show how I make thermofax screens. Today,(since I am still waiting for supplies) I made a couple of thermofax screens for Debra. She is making some t-shirts about blogging. To warm up, I made a screen for myself. One of the screens that Jane Dunnewold had for us to use was a wonderful little screen with a filigrees design. She said it was copyright free clip art. So I played with some clip art, enlarging and isolating elements, putting them together, then reducing to get a fun screen.

First of all – this is my good old thermofax. I bought it on e-bay a few years ago. I have had to replace the belt which is a wide circle of heavy duty vinyl or plastic.

Here is the roll of thermofax film. One side is smooth and the other size is rough – it is the mesh. When the screen is passed through the thermofax, the smooth side is melted away where it is next to the photocopy.

Thermofaxfilm

Here is the image that I created with a sheet of film in a carrier. The image must be made with a carbon based material. The new digital copy machines do not work. Some pencils and India Ink will work and I discovered today that pigment based inks in Epson Printers work.

Here is the final image burned into the film:

The screen is then attached to a frame. I use cardboard frames for transparencies, purchased from office supply stores. I then seal the edges with duct tape.

Tapedscreen

Here are my simple supplies for screenprinting: a padded surface, fabric, textile paint, a credit card, a spoon and the screen. I place some paint on the screen above the image and pull it across the image with the credit card. The screen can then be washed and reused many times.

Here is the final print on the fabric:

And there you have it!

Yesterday,I went shopping with Steph and Mia. Mia is going to be a flower girl in her Aunt Katie’s wedding in NC in July. We found a beautiful dress at Nordstrom. It is a simple tea length white dress with an organza overlay. We are going to get a sample of the bridesmaid’s dresses and make a sash to match them. We looked for shoes, but didn’t find the right thing. Mia has the Congdon female shopping gene, I am happy to say. She had a wonderful time.

My step pedometer arrived today and since 11 this morning, I have walked 7327 steps. Debra tells me that it takes 5 miles of walking to reach 10,000 steps. This is going to be a real challenge. Of course, I spent a lot of time at my computer today uploading the quarterly regional reports to the Surface Design website.
