Thank You!

Thank you for all the empowering and thoughtful comments on my 1500th post. You all really made my day.

Today, I had a mission to make a thermofax screen to print some things for Christmas gifts. Since I love my Aspen’s so much, I thought I would start there. Actually, I used one of my daughter, Lisa’s, paintings to make this screen. I changed it to black and white and turned it into a sketch.

Here is the screen. I found this hot pink duct tape and I love it!

I did some in green, too. I will reveal what I printed later.

Here is a photo of the aubergine quilt that I am giving away. I fiddled with it in Photoshop so the stitching looks off. The one I posted yesterday is traveling with the Twelve by Twelve quilts!! Leave a comment on yesterday’s post for a chance to own this.

I just had to show you this adorable little hat that I purchased at the ladies guild bazaar at church on Sunday. Cost me one dollar!!

Northwest Winter — A Study in Gray

Winter in the Northwest is gray. So, when Kirsty issued the Twelve X Twelve color challenge of gray — my mind went there. I had some photos that I had taken of my son and his wife at the Oregon Garden in winter.

I love the shape of the bare trees and the bleak landscape with the simple golden grasses. I turned the photos into sketches in Photoshop. The single tree became a themofax screen of a row of trees.

I first printed the larger photo on Jacquard’s Extravorganza, but the gray I got was not working. I was using a beautiful gray organza shibori for the background which I ended up painting a darker gray.


I used some of that with a full page self stick label to run it through the printer. I loved the color and the shibori lines added some interest to the photo. I printed the third photo as a smaller version to help balance the composition and to add some interest.

I did some simple running stiches with variegated perle cotton, and added some grasses in green and gold as a nod to the grasses in the original photos.

I learned a couple of things about this challenge. You can have fun with gray, and there are many shades of gray!!

Some Color

I received a package of glorious color today from The Wool Peddler. These are wooly cupcakes in delicious color ways.

This is silk Sari Ribbon which I will use in felting.

A gorgeous pound of hand-dyed high quality roving that are ends and leftovers at a great price.

I love these silk fibers – can’t wait to use them in felting.

This is pulled silk fiber, made by pulling the fibers from remnants.

I knew I could not survive the virus unscathed. I now have sinusitis which is causing severe vertigo when I awaken in the morning. After a saline rinse and sitting quietly for a couple of hours, I can sort of resume normal activity. My Dr. is out of town until Wednesday, so I am biding my time trying to cope with another setback.

We had a nice family meal last evening for Father’s Day. It was fun to see M & M and get caught up on their plans for the summer. I gave some books and sketch books to use this summer.

I got down to the studio this afternoon and actually made a thermofax screen and printed some images. I had fun last Friday with Photoshop and a couple of photos I took 3 years ago. I turned them into black and white sketches.

That is Mark and Jayme in the photo above. I did a test print on muslin and then printed on two different organzas.

This is a white organza with a woven leaf print.

This is a dark gray organza. The print on muslin was much clearer.

I received a lovely message from Jane Dunnewold this afternoon, telling me how much she liked my piece that I did for the SDA Member’s show at the conference. She thought it was one of the top ten pieces. I really needed that boost. In case you have forgotten, you can see it here.

Mr C came down with the crappy virus this week-end, but today, he was back at work, dismantling our old deck.

What a Day!

I awoke early because Mr C was taking my Lexus in for service at 7:30. I had several mundane tasks to accomplish — 3 loads of laundry, inventory for the show next week to be sent to the show computer guru, an inventory for a guild project and hopefully, some time in the studio.

I accomplished everything and managed to lose a front tooth. I am so bad about using my teeth to tear open a plastic bag — this time, my tooth disintegrated. Fortunately, I have an appointment tomorrow for cleaning and so they will give me a temporary cap until we figure out what I need to have done.

I decided to perk up some of the plainer scarves with some printing. I used a stencil  and black screenprinting ink for the rust dyed scarf, above, and the blue shibori scarf that I dyed a couple of weeks ago.

Another scarf that I did back then was also kind of boring so I did some copper printing on it.

Here is a detail. I used corrugated cardboard.

Not sure how much I will get done tomorrow since I am spending the morning at the dentist.

More Colorhue Dye Play

This is a piece of habotai silk on which I did some test printing with stamps and an aspen leaf thermofax screen. You can click on it to see it larger. I then dyed it with some pumpkin and yellow.

I decided to use the aspen leaf for one of the scarves. I really wanted to use the citron green that I mixed up the other day, so I screened the leaves with red paint. That has to be one of my favorite color combinations.

While I was working on this scarf, I had a chiffon scarf that I was using to test colors. I had poured all the left over dye from the other day into a pot and painted the chiffon. It was a really cool blue/black which I though would look good with the citron. The texture of the chiffon made an interesting design as I pulled the foam brush over it. I really love this piece. I had some trouble photographing this. The color is not really true.

I decided to do a test shibori on a habotai scarf that I bought for the workshop. I used rubber bands to wrap around the pvc pipe. I used blue, pumpkin and the citron. I like it.

I am already feeling much better on my second day of treatment for the gastric inflammation. Thanks for all the well wishes.
