NW Vibe — High Fiber Diet

Friday, August 5th, 2011

We went to the opening reception for the latest High Fiber Diet show — NW Vibe. That is my Red Sky at Night up there, my rendition of Portland at night looking West from our side of the river. If you click on it, you can get a better view. That is Terry’s piece at the bottom which is a view out the window on a rainy day with her sewing supplies at the ready. Sorry, the photo is a bit blurry.

Here is another overview of the show. I am not particularly fond of venues where the quilts have to be stacked like this, but sometimes that is a necessity.

Here are some individual pieces:

The piece on the bottom has sold. So happy for Chris!

The venue is a cafe/coffee house with a gallery area and beautiful vertical gardens on the exterior located in Oregon City. There was very enjoyable live music — a nice coffee house vibe for our NW Vibes.

Here is Terry and her daughter and some other folks. Terry’s grandchildren are gorgeous children.

I was very enamored of the vertical gardens. I have always wanted a vertical succulent garden on the side of our garage.

This is a newly planted vertical garden. They put carpet padding on the side of the building and then cut into it to place the plants. They are watered from above.

There is a free seminar of planting and caring for vertical gardens on Sunday  afternoon, I may have to go!!

Car Art

Sunday, July 3rd, 2011

Yesterday, Mr C and I went to the Portland Art Museum to see the current exhibit — The Allure of the Automobile. He was so excited when this exhibit was announced. It was good to get out of the house and enjoy a some time across the river.

We parked at Trinity and walked a few blocks to take a street car to the museum.

I went along to keep him company and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed these automobiles. I have a love for things that have great design and are made well. The details in these old vehicles were amazing.

This particular car is a Plymouth Explorer. It was a concept car made in Italy and very few were made. It was a classy ride!

Out on the street, they had a display of American Muscle cars. Mr C’s brother had a GTO, similar to this one back when we got married. We took a photo of it to send to him.

You can see more of my photos from the show on my Flickr site.

Good Times

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

Lisa arrived yesterday, and she always brings many rays of sunshine into our lives. We went food shopping and made a hearty soup – vegan version for her-, and enjoyed supper with the whole Portland clan. I have a special cabinet that is down low where I keep special dishes for  M & M. I asked Miles to get cups out for sparkling apple juice for the two of them. When we went into the dining room, he had set Lisa’s place with the Hello Kitty dishes that I have had for Mia since she was a baby. He is a little comedian!

The plate up there is a collaged plate that Lisa did a while ago and featured on her blog. I think she had a how to make it article in a magazine. Anyway,  that is a photo of me when I was a little girl. I was very happy when she gifted me with it yesterday.

She also brought me a copy of her book, “A Collection a Day”. It comes in this collectible tin – isn’t that smart marketing?

The book is not that big, but every page is a wonderful photo. Well, there are some text pages — an essay by Lisa about her creative life was fun to read. Apparently, I was a pretty good Mom and provided a creative place for my children. Tomorrow night, she has a book signing at Land in N. Portland.

Today, she gave a lecture at Portland State in the art department. She had a really cool powerpoint presentation. I was thrilled when she introduced me and said that I am also an artist. She has had an amazing journey, going from a part time artist working in the field of education to becoming a full time artist/illustrator with an agent. I think she really inspired the students today.

I spent a little time in the studio testing some of the deColourant colors that I have. What a difference the heat gun makes. These samples have been heat set and washed.

I am thinking of doing another piece using some of these colors.

Out of Hibernation

Sunday, April 10th, 2011

I have lovely blog friends. This was gifted to me by Elisabeth B., one of my blog readers who ordered the Twelve by Twelve book. This is titled Lichen and uses a photo of the bridge at my beloved Rhodie Garden which she took on a trip to Portland. Everything in Portland had a layer of lichen or moss most of the year! I love it!

Mr C and I emerged from hibernation this week-end. Yesterday, we went to see The Lincoln Lawyer at our local movie theater. Today, in addition to church, we drove down to Dundee to the Erath winery for a private members event. We tasted wine and ate some yummy goodies.

Speaking of lichen, you have to love the chartreuse roof on this shed at the winery.

Here is our stach of wine, mainly pinot noir, that we brought home with us.

On the drive, I saw this sign which tickled me. Next time I am feeling blue, I think I will book some Joy!

I dyed some black fabric on Friday. I have always had problems with black and I was thrilled with my results. I used Dharma Jet black.

Tonight, I did some testing with deColourant discharge plain and metallic gold and used the heat gun. I am very happy with the results. This is before washing and after using the heat gun.

This is after I washed them. I think this will work very nicely for windows on my cityscape buildings.

A Busy Saturday

Saturday, November 20th, 2010

Despite my scratchy throat, I went to a lecture on the designer/builder who built our home, today. His name was Ken Birkemeier. He started building homes in the mid 1930s and eventually built mid-century modern homes in the 50s, one of which we own. We learned that listing your home as one built by him adds to its value. We also discovered that some of the quirky things in our house show up in others. I plan to take some photos and blog about this later.

Later in the day, we went to the Wild Arts Festival. Terry and I had both donated 6 X 6 inch bird art for the Audubon Society fundraiser. They had both been sold by the time we got there, but they had a nice poster with all of the art. My crow is circled on the detail shot. The whole poster shows Terry’s bird. You can click it to see it larger.

I always enjoy listening to this woman talk about the live birds. This is a raven. We were warned not to cluck at it because it gets aroused – as that is a mating sound. LOL

We wandered around the show for a bit. My photos are not very good because I only had my iPhone. I loved this pottery.

One of our Columbia FiberArts members, Heidi, was there with her felted balls, stones and ornaments.

This woman is always there with these gorgeous handwoven towels. She had some gorgeous handdyed bamboo yarn for weaving.

In one room, they have lots of books for sale on local flora and fauna, hiking, cooking, etc. I bought a couple of Christmas presents.

Today is Miles’ 9th birthday. He had a bowling and pizza party with a few friends today. Tomorrow, we will take the family out and have our own celebration. It is good to stretch out birthdays!!
