A Circus Date with M & M

Friday, April 16th, 2010

We took M & M to the Cirque du Soleil traveling show, Kooza. We picked them up after school and got to our seats just in time for the pre-show clowning around. I think the clowns are my favorite part of the show. Mia would get bored during the clown segments and preferred the wild acrobatics.

They got very excited as we approached the venue and they could see the tents.

Unfortunately, photography is not allowed during the show. I did get photos of the kids, munching on their treats during intermission.

While Mia was totally engaged in the whole scene, Miles was completely stoic. I was concerned that the loud sounds and flashing lights would be  a problem because of his autism, but he was totally engage, even if he showed no emotions.

We stopped at Burgerville to pick up supper for them. I was anxious to get home and ice my shoulder. The Dr. is pretty sure it is a torn rotator cuff so I am doing ice and heat, alternately, wearing a sling and taking Aleve. Hoping this works. Oh, and I am not to lift any thing heavier than a coffee cup for two weeks.

I hope my new camera is not heavier than a coffee cup because I am enjoying it, very much.

These are photos of the Hawthorne Bridge, taken from the car.

An iris in the yard at dusk.

I need to get back in the studio tomorrow.

Japanese Garden

Friday, April 9th, 2010

I was quite disappointed with how the Japanese Garden Pavilion looked for our show. They had tables lining the room piled with stuff, some of it was work by the paper artists, some was 3-d stuff by our group, but a lot of it was stuff from their own gift store.

In the past we have had the pavilion for just our show and it really looked like an art show. We did not hang every thing. We saved work to bring out as work was sold and it was very elegant.

Here are some beautiful pillows made by one of our members.

As you can see, a lot of people came out for the reception and to be in the garden on such a beautiful evening.

You  could almost see Mt Hood, click on the photo and you can see it amongst the clouds.

This is the pavilion where the show is held.

Here are some other photos from the garden.

And Mr C, chilling, while I schmoozed.

After the reception, we had a delicious dinner at a nice restaurant. We hadn’t been out for dinner together for some time so it was extra special.

I still have packages to wrap and get in the mail, but I am staying cool, calm and collected and enjoying the season. Last night, we went across the street to the Reed College auditorium to hear a concert by the Portland Gay Men’s Chorus. It was fantastic — spiritual and hilarious.

I dyed a few scarves yesterday and did more today. The one above was laid flat on plastic and painted with a foam brush with black and citron. I love it. I splattered some black for more detail. Here are the others.

The last two were under-dyed with beige before I wrapped them on pvc and added more color.

I often find Scooter in the Dining Room staring out the window. We have squirrels who live in the trees so I think he is watching them.

Here is his view:

Not very exciting. Maybe he is watching cars go by on the street beyond the trees. The best thing is watching him play ball by himself. Wish I had a video camera!

Tomorrow, after church, I will wrap up stuff and put them in FedEx packages and drop them off on Monday. They will get to their destinations in time to be opened.

Over the River

ropedyedscarves

Today was Some Thursday at Someones House (STASH), except we went to the Pittock Mansion and out to lunch, instead. I wanted to give my friends scarves as gifts. This morning, I decided to do two more. These are silk chiffon which I wrapped around a thick rope and then squirted with chartreuse, turquoise and black. I rinsed them in water and threw them into the dryer with a towel. While I got dressed, they dried and were ready to wrap.

The Pittock Mansion sits way up on the western hills. Reva and I live over on the east side of Portland, across the Willamette river. We met Beth, Gale and Terry at the mansion because they live over in the western hills. Here is everyone waiting in the cold for the mansion to open.

I was not particularly enamored with the overdone interior decorator holiday decor, but I loved seeing this beautiful building which has fabulous views. Here is Mt Hood from the mansion.

I was enamored with this shower which is the precursor for the modern day multiple shower heads.

We went to the Chart House which sits up on a hillside with a panoramic view of  the Willamette and the East side of Portland and beyond. There is Mt. Hood, again. My house is down there someplace.

It was a great day with friends. I came home and made Mr C a stew of beef, mushrooms, onions and brown rice with a fabulous stout from a brewery in Eugene. It added a wonderful richness to the stew. I made broccoli to go with it.

I finally dragged myself into the studio at 9 pm and watched The Office and 30 Rock while I got some quilting done on the pink piece. I have to finish it tomorrow, but first, we are going to take Scooter out to the boonies to cut down a Christmas tree.

A Great Summer Day

aspenbackground

I had a fabulous day with my grandchildren and Mr C and still managed to work in the studio. This is a temporary layout for a fused background for the next aspen landscape. I fuse the fabric to parchment paper and then I lift the whole thing off and fuse it as one piece to the batting. This way, I can rearrange pieces. Once it is fused to the batting, I will add the backing and quilt it. The aspens get added after that.

This morning Mia and Miles arrived early. I have been promising to take Mia to the Escher exhibit at the Portland Art Museum. Miles did not want to go, but Mr C wanted to go and promised him a visit to the gift shop. Here is Mia with Abe Lincoln on our way into the museum

We really enjoyed the Escher exhibit. It was so neat to see his preliminary drawings and sketches. The Metamorphose which was a continuous changing and morphing design was awesome.

We also enjoyed the tattoo exhibit and watched a slide show of tattoo art on people from Portland. You can see them at this Flickr site. You will be warned about this site because it shows body parts!

Here is a shot of the Sculpture Garden as we were leaving. I am quite fond of these horses. There are 3 or 4 on the entrance to PDX airport.

We bought some goodies for M & M and some jewelry for me. I love glass rings because I am allergic to some metals so I picked up a couple. Here is Mia’s choice — The Pocket Guide to Girl Stuff. She read this instead of eating lunch!!

Miles scored a book of fake Geek Tattoos. I put one on his arm and forgot to get a photo.

Miles was adamant that he wanted sushi for lunch so we headed back to our neighborhood sushi restaurant, Tani’s.

Mr C and Miles were trying to decide what drinks to order.

Because Mia was reading, Miles ate both California rolls. She did eat her miso soup.

It was a great day and then I got to watch 3 hours of Project Runway. It doesn’t get much better than that.
