A Whirlwind Wednesday

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

OK, before I blather on about my life, I know you want pretty pictures. I decided the indigo scarf that I was rust dyeing was done. Here it is:

I love how that bamboo looking motif that emerged. I am very happy with my first attempt at rust dyeing. It really took a somewhat boring scarf to a new level. I am definitely addicted.

I seem to have very busy Wednesdays. I have to get up and out of the house for my 9:30 WW weigh-in. I usually do some grocery shopping on my way home. Every other Wednesday, Maryama is here to clean up after me. Which means, I have to do some uncluttering before she gets here. During the summer, I have to get to the farmer’s market around 3:30. Once a month I have a Trinity Website meeting at 5:30. So, it is always difficult to sandwich in the things I want to do or need to do in my office and studio.

Today, I finished some reorganizing in my office. My desk was driving me nuts. Too much stufff. I was losing things — like bills that needed to be paid. I was trying to keep too many files on the desk and decided that I would not be so lazy and put them in a file drawer in the credenza. We moved the Grand’s toy stuff to the other end of the room. I was tired of looking down and seeing and tripping over the legos, etc on the floor, left from their last visit. Tomorrow, I am going to finish spiffing up the studio. I also need to move my clothes into my new closet from the guest room because Lisa is coming for a week. I don’t think she would appreciate my using her bedroom as my dressing room. Vladimir and his son Sergi painted it today. Mr C is installing the components as I sit here blogging and enjoying Project Runway.

Here are some photos of the gorgeous cabinets that our son-in-law, Jack designed and Tom, the hippy dippy cabinet maker crafted. Notice the beautiful grain in the rift sawn white oak. Tom says it is his new favorite wood. This is the tall cabinet in the corner, just inside the door. It was difficult to photograph.

This is the base of the cabinet in the entry to the bathroom and closet. Notice how the grain matches all the way down. Tomorrow, we have to go out to the granite place and make sure we are happy with the piece we reserved so that it can be cut. It will go on top of these drawers.

It was such a pretty day, I thought I would take some photos at the farmer’s market. These are clickable for a larger view.

Oh, just to be honest, I gained a pound this week. I am in one of those plateaus where clothes are getting to big, but I am not losing weight. That’s my diet life!!

Got My Mojo Back

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Monday night, I had a deep and restful sleep. I now have energy, clarity and joy. I have just about finished my illumination piece for the 12 X 12 challenge. The reveal will be August 1. Here is a sneak peek.

I cut up some of the silk scraps from that piece and auditioned them for the SAQA auction piece. This does not look too tasteful, at all.

Yesterday, our cabinet maker started installing the storage units for the bathroom. They are rift sawn oak with no stain — au naturel. The boxes are installed, but now drawers or doors, yet. Today, Mr C  and I went to the coolest hardware store in Portland, Chown. We were totally in sync, and it took very little time to find the drawer pulls and door knobs for the cabinets. We also got the toilet tissue holder, a magnifying mirror for me, some robe hooks and hardware for the closet pocket drawer.

Wednesday is weigh-in day and Farmer’s market. I was relieved that I had no weight gain after a week of eating out. For dinner, we had albacore tuna, rainbow chard and green beans, all scored at the Farmer’s market. So fresh, healthy and tasty.

The Bishop’s Close

Today, Mr C and I took a short drive to The Bishop’s Close. It is a beautiful estate on the Willamette River. It was bequeathed to the Bishop of the diocese of Oregon. The current bishop has his office there. The gardens are open to the public. It has a beautiful walking trail which meanders through a rock garden and by several water features, with views of the river and the vistas to the East. This was the view of Mt. Hood on this sunny afternoon.

Purple Crocuses were everywhere. Daphne was starting to bloom and gave off a wonderful scent.

I loved this mossy rock garden.

I think these are Manzanita which were on the trail closest to the river.

Here is the actual building that the garden’s surround.

All of the photos can be seen on my Flickr site.

I finished my homework for Lizzie’s class, week 4, on Saturday. I’m having so much fun doing these exercises. Otherwise, I have spent a lovely week-end off. Tomorrow, I have a meeting in the morning, homework to do for my EFM church history class and the class in the evening. Tuesday, I will be back at work, creating.

Week-end Potpourri

Sunday, January 13th, 2008

It has been a lovely week-end in our part of the world. We got some short sun-breaks yesterday and a really lovely sunny afternoon, today.

Yesterday, I decided it was time to take the tagine for a test drive. So I called up Steph and invited the family to come for dinner.

tagine.jpg

For the uninitiated, these were developed by the nomadic people in the desert and worked like an oven on an open fire. I decided to make chicken with apricots and almonds. First, you mix cinnamon, ginger, turmeric, salt and pepper. Add a couple of tablespoons of oil and coat the chicken pieces.

Brown the chicken in the tagine base.

Slice onions and make a little bundle of cilantro and parsley.

Then brown the onions.

Add the chicken and the herbs and some water. Cover and let it cook. While it cooks, prepare a mixture of honey and water and cook the dried apricots in it until the sauce thickens. Add it to the chicken and cook some more. Then sprinkle it with toasted almonds and serve over couscous. I served peas as a veggie. It was really, really good. I made brownies for brownie sundaes. Mia says, “Grandma wouldn’t give us WW brownies!” Yes, she would and she did. They were very tasty – just small so I gave the non-dieters two. I had nonfat frozen yogurt and they had very rich vanilla ice cream.

Before I did all that cooking, I took a walk during the 4 pm sun break and took my camera. See, here is the blue sky!

The main reason I took my camera was to get a photo of this. The photo does not do the site justice. It really looks cool.

It is a construction fence that snakes across the woodsy canyon on the Reed College Campus. They are building a pedestrian bridge across the canyon to the new dormitories.

The morning paper had an article about an art show opening at Marylhurst University. The artist, Leonard Rudder, has an interesting story. He was an art school graduate from the north east who moved here in 1950. He was involved for a short time with the art community and then just faded away. He worked as a custodian at an elementary school. He didn’t stop painting, but he stopped showing his work. Two years ago, the curator of the show went into the basement of this now 90 year old man and found a treasure trove. We loved his work. It was all very abstract and quite wonderful. Here is one of the pieces that I scanned from the catalog.

After our art date, we went to the mall and did a little shopping. I scored some brown corduroy jeans, a sweater and a couple of cotton tees. Mr C found nada.

Early this morning, we were awakened by flashing lights on the street behind our house. Another car had missed the curve and driven up on our parking strip. This one was pretty bad. The old van was crunched against one of our big fir trees. We never heard the crash or sirens, but there were several police cars and a wrecker moving the car by the time we were aware of the situation. I couldn’t go back to sleep so I am going to go night night now and catch up on my sleep.

A Really Nice Thursday

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

You have to love a day that includes museum viewing and lunching with friends and some creative time in the studio.

Today, my STASH group met at the Contemporary Craft Museum to check out the current exhibit and to do some shopping. I bought this funky little creche. It is hand carved, painted and embellished with flocking.

We then had lunch at the Park Kitchen, a few blocks from the museum. It has a very unusual menu. I had clams braised in cider with apples, onions and greens. It was so delicious.

Here we are, back row: Reva, Moi, Linda. Front row: Terry, Beth, Gale.

I loved this painting of dogs enjoying some fancy drinks.

We shared two delicious desserts. Pear Frangipane tart and a Chocolate Ginger concoction.

When I got home this afternoon, I laundered my cotton Christmas fabric and worked on the dupioni silk runner. It is all quilted and waiting for binding. These things could become addictive. I have really enjoyed the mindless piecing.

Here is a close-up. I have enough of the stripe to use for binding, but I am not sure if that is what I want. What do you think?

Tomorrow, we are going out to hunt down a Christmas tree. After school, M & M are coming to help me decorate the tree and to spend the night. Warning – cute pictures will be posted in the next couple of days.
