Short Attention Span

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

Not much to show for the couple of days since I last posted. I am trying to remember what I did yesterday. Oh, I burned a CD and sent an entry to PAQA South’s ArtQuiltsmovement. I really had to stretch the artist statement!! I will not be surprised if I don’t get in. Anyway, I am still wandering. I am not lost, just not focused.

The next Twelve by Twelve colorplay theme is chartreuse, selected by me. This afternoon, I started pulling out some chartreuse fabrics and some other fabrics to fill out a palette I have in mind. The first photo is some silk that I might use.

Here are the hand-dyed cottons that I came up with.

I then looked through my commercial fabrics and came up with some that might be fun to fit into the mix.

Tonight, I did some sketches for this. I know what I want to do, now, I have to see if I can pull it off. Tomorrow, I will be Mistyfusing some fabric.

We have been having miserable rainy weather. This afternoon, the sun came out for a bit. Mr C and I took Scooter for a walk at the Rhodie garden. All of a sudden, I see that it is pink season in Portland, again.

And for all the Scooter fans, he got a haircut in preparation for two weeks out at the doggie farm (now canceled). He looks so skinny.

The news from Japan is not very good tonight. Such a triple disaster.

Check Off One

Monday, March 7th, 2011

Today was the postmark deadline for the Alliance for American Quilt’s annual contest. The theme this year was “Alliances: People, Patterns, Passion”.  When I heard the theme, I thought of the Pearls of Wisdom piece that I made for the Quilt Art’s 15th birthday. It fit the theme so well, but it was 15 inches square and needed to be 16 inches square. So, I trimmed it to 14 inches and added an inch of batting on each side. I then pulled out some of the batiks used in the hands and fused a border. I don’t usually like borders, but I think this looks ok.

I got to the post office at 4:45 pm. But, I made it!!

On Saturday night, we had a collaborative dinner with some friends. I made dessert. It was so yummy — a gingerbread and pear upside down cake.

In between baking and other quilting, I am plugging away at the river piece. Stitching the bridges in place is very tedious.

I hope you are checking in on the Twelve by Twelve blog. We are taking turns talking about our chapters and asking questions. The answers left in the comments section will give you a chance for winning our book, which keeps getting wonderful reviews. We discovered today that Target is carrying the book and we are #4 on Amazon’s quilting books.

So Busy!

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

I spent a lot of time yesterday wrangling this river piece to get the quilting done. Lately most of my quilting has been rather straight forward, but I have done some crazy quilting on this thing.

Mr C and I also prepared the hanging system on all 18 quilts for the Back to Nature show. They needed to have a taught wire, stapled to the wood rod so that they can hang nicely on the gallery system at Trinity.

Today, we hung the show. I think it looks fantastic. I am so proud of High Fiber Diet for being able to pull off this show on relatively short notice. I took some quicky shots with my iPhone. Here is my aspen piece with pieces by Carol Heist and Bonnie Bucknam.

And here is a piece by Terry Grant with one by Karen Miller.

We are having the opening tomorrow night. Here is the postcard that Terry did for us.

While surfing through blogs today, I came across this dress designed by Carolina Herrera and worn by Mariska Hargitay.

Here is a detail:

I just love how shibori and other surface design details are showing up in high fashion. I could easily see a detail like this in an art quilt.

Be sure to check out the Twelve by Twelve blog over the next 12 days, we are going through the book chapter by chapter with some questions for you to answer and then you get a chance to win our book which is getting rave reviews. We are so excited.

Put An Aspen On It

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Today is the reveal for our latest Twelve x Twelve colorplay theme — blue/sage/brown. It said landscape to me. I have done many landscapes with aspens, but never for the Twelve challenges so I decided it was time. This is another version of the Spooner Lake aspens. I think this is number 3 or 4.

I used Sue Benner’s method for this. The batting is fused and then strips of fabric are used to create the landscape and fused to the batting. Then a good amount of stitching is done to finish it off. This is what it looks like before stitching. This is a very preliminary fabric sketch that I did to see if the plan would work.

This is the background after it is fused and stitched.

Here is a detail shot of the finished piece.

I get to select the next colorplay theme. Stay tuned for my reveal in the next couple of days.

Messing Around

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

I finished my landscape for the next Twelve x Twelve reveal. Check that off the list!

Last night, I met Terry Grant for an early dinner and then we went to a High Fiber Diet meeting. We had a very interesting discussion about what makes a quilt art, finishing work for a show — sleeves, labels, etc. We also discussed the need to mount professional shows which means it sometimes does not seem fair because a lot of work does not make the cut.

I took a few copies our our new book and sold four of them. I have a link to buy an autographed copy in the menu on the right. Click on that and it will take you to a page and then to Paypal. I plan to include a piece of mini art with each book that is purchased.

That photo up there is one of the activities in a book that the STASH group is working through, Mess: the manual of accidents and mistakes.

It is  a wonderfully silly book. I have been way behind the others in the group and I did not want to show up tomorrow without something to show for it. For the exercise at the top, we were to slather the page with glue and drop small slivers of paper and let them land where ever.

For this page, we were to drizzle something sticky, such as glue or honey and then pour a powdery substance on it and blow or shake off the excess. Mine is glue and cocoa powder.

For this, we had to drop some ink or other color liquid and let it roll around the paper or do an ink blot. I did the latter.

This page has pomegranate juice poured from 5 feet above the page.

For me, this was just plain fun. I think it is a great way to loosen up and get rid of your inhibitions. I really had fun.

I am working on a big piece for a juried invitational show. I have the batting cut. I am working on creating some of Portland’s bridges on lutradur, which I will paint, once they are cut. Can’t say too much about this.

So, tomorrow, I am off for some fun with my STASH friends.
