Coasting

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010

:to act or make progress without making much effort.

That is what I am doing. I have gotten into a routine with the coaster production. I can go down to the studio and whip out a set in an hour after dinner.  The rest of the day is a mish mosh of stuff that is necessary, but eating up time that I’d rather spend some other way. I had to go out to the Kaiser Pharmacy this morning to pick up a new prescription for my blood pressure, which has been misbehaving.

Then I cleaned the refrigerator before I took Scooter for a walk.  I was impressed that I did not have any science experiments in the fridge.

This afternoon, Miles came to spend some time with us while his Mom did some errands. He has pneumonia and has been out of school all week. He is so much better today. Then off to the grocery store and you know how it goes. Tomorrow, I have a guild committee meeting and then M & M are coming to spend the night with us. I have to prepare main course for 8 for dinner on Saturday. I am making a Honey-mustard glazed pork loin wrapped in bacon, butternut squash polenta and roasted brussels sprouts.

So I think it will be Monday before I get back to the studio again.

Here is a detail of tonight’s coasters.

I am trying to organize my studio and my life to get started on some looming projects. One of them is the next Twelve X Twelve colorplay challenge — eggplant, wine and emerald green. I rummaged around in my stash tonight and found these dupioni silks that might work. I was thinking of doing something with silk organzas. Perhaps I will paint some fabric.

Rusty Square Dance

Monday, November 1st, 2010

This is my offering for the Twelve X Twelve rusty colorplay theme. I was inspired by the postage stamp quilts created by Kathleen Loomis. She does huge installations! In my quest to try new techniques and ideas for the Twelve X Twelve colorplay challenges, I thought I would try a small version.

I had a criteria that Kathleen does not have, mine had to end up at a specific size. I started by grabbing some quilted scraps and cutting them into 1 & 1/2 inch squares.

I tried lining them up on a 12 inch ruler, but I could not get them to fit. I then tried  1 & 3/4 inches which worked perfectly with 6 across and 6 down.

I sandwiched and quilted the silk fabrics that I had rusted and discharged.

I cut the squares and worked on an arrangement. I wanted them to be random, but with only two fabrics, I couldn’t get a layout that  I liked.

So, I eventually went with the alternating squares. I thought I could just grab a row of squares and start stitching. Noooo! Remember, I needed these to fit into a 12 inch square. My solution was to use a strip of painter’s tape which I laid across the 12 inch ruler. I then lined up the squares and took them to the machine and stitched down each side.

My next problem was how to hang this. I decided that I wanted to have a copper rod with a verdigris patina. I found 12 inch rods at the hardware store. I googled how to add a patina to copper and put one in Miracle Grow and one in ammonia glass cleaner. The one I used was in the ammonia. The Miracle Grow was very nice, but in my haste, I did not remove enough of the lacquer so the patina was not even over the rod. Here is the one that I used.

Here is a detail:

I decided to leave dangling threads. I also tried zig zagging the edges, but that added too much distraction.

Now, I must finish my self portrait which needs to be submitted today. If you haven’t seen the other rusty pieces, go on over to Twelve X Twelve.

Creative Overload

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

I am working on 3 projects at one time. I think this is a good thing. I have the two that have deadlines for Monday under control.

Today, I sandwiched the two silk fabrics that I am using in the rusty color play Twelve X Twelve piece. I can’t show what I am doing next with these!

Yesterday, Steph took me out for a belated birthday lunch and then we paid a visit to Gossamer Fiber Arts, a place I have wanted to visit for some time. I bought some lovely merino wool prefelt and this plant dyed roving.

Now, I am going to do hand-stitching on the alternate universe piece and watch the finale of Project Runway.

Progress

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

I have the updated self portrait ready to quilt. This makes me smile. I still have to figure out how to do my glasses!! I think I will do the turquoise pair.

I played a bit with some of the colors for the Rusty colorplay challenge for my fiber sketch tonight.

I got to pick Miss Mia up from school today because Miles had a Dr appointment. It was fun taking her out for an after school snack. We had just gotten to my house when her Mom showed up, but still a fun time.

Trial and Error

Monday, October 25th, 2010

After mistakes and some experimenting, I finally got a piece of fabric that I am happy with. You can click it to see it enlarged.

After the last failure, I decided to mix up some turquoise dye with thiox discharge paste. I have done this in the past to get turquoise deposited where the fabric is discharged. For some reason, turquoise does not discharge. Remember that a couple of weeks ago, I was discharging black fabric. I had some paste mixed up and sitting in my dye kitchen. I blithely added turquoise dye and went to work.

I wore my respirator!

And after the fabric dried, I ironed it and then threw it in the wash. Guess what? I ended up with a piece of rust silk with no marks at all. Well, I forgot that thiox paste is only good for about 24 hours. Duh.

My next experiment was to mix dynaflow paint with the de Colourant paste. I made more marks on the rust silk.

After I steamed it with an iron, I could see from the back that the rust had discharged.

When I washed it, I got the subtle verde green color in the first photo. I am very happy with it.

I am working on two projects that need to be completed by next Monday. The other is for a juried show at my church, Trinity Episcopal, titled: Mirror, Mirror, a show of self portraits.

I did a self portrait a  few years ago for a Quilting Arts challenge — a Picasso version of my younger self. I decided to do an updated version and mount them together – sort of me – 50 years apart. The older me is more colorful! Here they are with the newer version a work in progress.

I have been having fun and feel very energized after a fallow period. The studio is a mess which means I am in creative mode.
