Feeling Flummoxed

Friday, August 27th, 2010

I have lost my focus. I am finding it very difficult to concentrate on anything for very long. I am spending too much time playing games on the computer and staring at the wall. I fool around all day and don’t make it to the studio until late afternoon. This is a funk that I have been in before so I know I will work my way out of it. Once I start in the studio, it is great, but why can’t I get more discipline? Argh!

I have been working on Allegro:

I think I need to set aside some time to make some new fabric — I want to screen print, discharge, soy wax, etc. I need some stimulation for new work.

I have been beading the Twelve by Twelve lorikeet quilt. I haven’t done beading lately and I am finding it very soothing.

I did get set up with Skype yesterday and talked to Diane Hock and Brenda Gael Smith of the Twelves. So much fun. Of course, I know Diane well, but it was fun to hear Brenda’s Aussie accent.

My other creative endeavor today was to make this very delicious rustic peach tart.

Tomorrow, we are taking Miss Mia to a Garrison Keilor concert at the Oregon Zoo. She is a big fan of NPR and The Prairie Home Companion. I promised her that if Garrison ever came to Portland that I would take her. I hope she enjoys it. Unfortunately, it is outside and the weather forecast is not that great. But, we are hardy Oregonians!!

What Do You Mean It’s Wednesday

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

I was too hot and tired to blog yesterday. I didn’t accomplish much other than getting to my Dr’s appointment in the morning. I got to see my CT Scan and was shown how clear all my sinuses are except for that bit of blockage behind my right eye near the optic nerve, the carotid artery and my brain! Not a fun place for someone to be poking around. He believes that my headaches are from allergies and not blocked sinuses. I am following good hygiene of saline rinses and cortisone nasal spray – without those, I would have more problems. So for now, we are putting surgery on the back burner. I will go back in December and probably have another CT scan.

Yesterday, we had the east winds which are hot and dry and blow everything around. Today, I had an allergy headache, but I dealt with it. It is probably something I will have to live with here in the NW.

Today, I went to Terry Grant’s house to help check with the color proofs of our Twelve x Twelve book. We found a few blips, but overall it looks fantastic. It is really gorgeous – bigger than I expected – nicely laid out. I can’t wait for it to arrive next March.

Tonight, I was determined to do something in the studio so I did another fiber sketch which is a variation on a theme. It is the photo up at the top. I am working up to making some of these larger.

I have also been working on allegro, thinking about various layouts for it.

I have been thinking about going back to making some of my own clothing. I love artsy things and it is very hard for me to find clothes in a retail shop that fit me without some altering. I love this outfit that Michelle Obama was wearing on Martha’s Vineyard.

I finished The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest tonight. I enjoyed the trilogy and am sorry that there will be no more. I am happy that I have gotten back in the habit of spending some time reading a real book every day.

A Day of Getting It Together

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

I am working on a couple of pieces that I cannot show. Today was a day of getting myself organized so that I have some uninterrupted time for working.

I bought some beads and blue perle cotton to finish the lorikeet felted piece. I love to test myself. I went off to the store with no color samples and came home with perfect color matches.

When we were remodeling a house in North Carolina, we had all of our furnishings in storage. The designer we were working with picked a blue for the dining room walls. I came in and looked at it and said, this is wrong. It will not match the Karastan rug that is in storage. We kept fiddling with the color until I was happy with it. When they unrolled the carpet from storage, she took one look and said, “Damn, you are good!”

I found a bag of scraps that I started saving after taking a class with Sue Benner. She is a fuser. When you attach Wonder Under to the back of fabric, it does not go all the way to the edges. She cuts these off, leaving a bit of fusing on the edge and then uses them to create wonderful strip landscapes.

I used some of the painted lutradur as the background and let it show through in areas. That piece is rather Lorikeet looking, don’t you think?

Tomorrow, I am off  to see the ENT doctor and find out if sinus surgery is in my future. Then, I hope to get a lot done in my studio. No time to waste.

Aerobic Creativity

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

I was determined to come up with an idea for my next Twelve by Twelve piece. The color way this time is the colors of the Lorikeet which our Australian member, Brenda, sees around her home.

I was in my studio looking at fabric and paint and then saw my wool roving. Bingo! I would felt something. I started by using my felting attachment on my Bernina, but I made an error attaching the needles and sheared off the screw that holds the attachment. I thought, I can do wet felting!

And so I did. It is quite a workout as you have to roll up the piece and rock and roll it. Then you undo it give it a turn, roll it up again, etc. etc. My arms are feeling it tonight.

Here is a sneak peek of what I did.

It is drying. I will do some hand stitching and maybe some embellishment. I am so relieved to have this well on its way. I hope you are having a creative week-end, too.

Giddy!

This has been a fantastic day. The Twelves received a pdf preview of our book, Twelve by Twelve. It is gorgeous, with loads of color photos of the quilts, our processes and our studios. The text is full of love and wit. I was in tears as I read through it. It is a real book, and it is a gem — way beyond my expectations. I can’t wait for the publication in the spring.

I am happy for the beautiful weather. It is just perfect now. When I could tear myself away from the book, I enjoyed being in the great outdoors. Wednesday is farmer’s market day. We had a great dinner from my findings. Tomorrow morning, there will be more fresh berries for breakfast.

I did get to the studio for a bit this afternoon and again tonight. I am working on two pieces concurrently. If I am going to meet all my deadlines for August and September, I have to get cracking.

I am loving the beauty of my red and black painted organza pojagi squares. I am so glad I made the effort to paint silk. It is so luscious to work with. Each little pocket is such a delight when it is turned and pressed.

I also have been cutting aspen trees. I touched up the paint on the background on Sunday. I am also working on the leaves which I want to  print on silk organza.

So, there you have it – why I am giddy tonight.
