Losing Focus

Friday, April 30th, 2010

I am ready to move on to something else, but I have  set my goals and I will make them!! It took me until late this afternoon to get these latest two 6 inch square pieces done. These will be an homage to the pink season here in Portland. I still need to add some pink petals to the trees and the ground. I love that background fabric which was languishing in my stash.

Be sure to check back tomorrow for the Kilauea Twelve X Twelve challenge reveal. I will post two and I need help deciding which one should be part of the final 12 pieces.

Tonight, I will watch a movie with Mr C and stitch, stitch, stitch pearls onto the batik pieces.

Making Batik Sandwiches

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Since the Artists Among Us show is on Mother’s Day week-end, I thought I would make a few things (in addition to the scarves) for moms. I put together eight of these today. Here is a detail.

I am going to embellish each hand with some pearls. Then I will add the backs and a little hanging ring.  I have so many batiks, I will never use them up!!

I want to do a few more landscapes on the 6″ X 6″ gallery wrapped canvases, too.

I spent most of the morning with my dental hygienist and my dentist. My teeth are sparkly clean and I have a temporary front tooth. I will go back in June to get fitted for a new crown.

We had some really wild weather this afternoon. It poured rain and hailed so much that it looked as if it had snowed. Then the sun came out.

Today was the unveiling of the Twelve X Twelve quilts in Australia. There are some photos of Kirsty and Brenda hanging them on the Twelve X Twelve blog. It made me so happy to see them there  in all their glory that I cried!

On a Roll

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Wow, what a difference a week makes. I have had hardly a twinge of pain today. I lost my best studio scissors so I went on a clean up the mess rampage in the studio and my office. I didn’t find them. I haven’t seen them in quite a while. I asked Mr C if he might have borrowed them. I got an interesting non-verbal response. I went into his work room and there they were on his work bench. He still claims his innocence. LOL

Judy asked me if I had made the aspen fabric at our workshop together. No, up above you can see what is left of my current aspen fabric. I paint organza with splotches of black, brown and white. Then, I cut strips for the trunks. This is one way I make the trunks. Sometimes I use shibori fabric.

I ordered and received about 24 silk charmeuse scarf blanks in different sizes. Mr C had a thing at church on Saturday so if the weather is nice, I think I will do some scarf dyeing. I think they will be a nice addition to my booth next month.

I also received some bobbin washers from a FB friend:

They appear to be made of Teflon.

You put them in the bobbin case, under the bobbin and they are supposed to prevent those nasty thread nests on the back of the quilt when you do free motion quilting. I have not tried them yet.

I am so pleased with my two Kilauea quilts. Since I can’t show them yet, I am showing the back. I love to buy designer boo boo fabric on sale which I use for the backs of my quilts. This is one of the fabrics I had in my stash.

I am doing hand sewing of facings and hanging sleeves tonight. I am a little tired from my day of activity. I also went for a 3 mile walk with Steve and Scooter. Here are a couple of photos I took on our walk. It is the pink season here in Portland.

Looks like someone needs to shovel their pink snow!!

I also received queries about the books that I discovered. Someone wrote down the names and authors and is going to send them to us. When I get the list from her, I will share.

A Power Surge

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

After a day and a half of trying to get back to work, tonight I hit my stride. I finished two pieces for the Twelve X Twelve Kilauea challenge. But I can’t show you those until the May 1 reveal.

I want to make up some small works for the show next  month. Tonight, I made the little aspen piece. It is mounted on a 6 inch square gallery wrapped frame. The background is pieced from some hand-dyed velvet that Kristin sent me a while back.

It really makes a lush background for this simple landscape. I have enough left to make another one, maybe two.

I also decided I shouldn’t wait until the last minute to get hanging sleeves on the big pieces so tonight I got two cut and sewn, ready to attach.

Last night was High Fiber Diet Meeting. It was a great meeting. We each brought one or two books that inspire us. I was reintroduced to some old goodies and discovered some new gems that I may need to add to my library.

Our new show, Bird’s Eye View will make it’s debut at the Second Story Gallery in Camas, WA, over the river from Portland. The opening reception is the same night as the opening reception for Artists Among Us. I must be doing something right, I have two openings on the same night!

My shoulder has been bothering me when I wake up in the morning and gets better as the day goes on. That is encouraging to me. I lost another pound. I haven’t lost a lot, but I am going in the right direction.

So that is the news from Moreland Lane tonight.

Bouncing Back

Monday, April 19th, 2010

I am bouncing back from the back/shoulder injury. I did not need the sling today, and I managed to take a nice walk with Scooter. I picked up my unsold inventory at the Japanese Garden. I sold two scarves. There were not a lot of sales, period. The Garden rep said she liked my kimonos and was surprised they did not sell. I price my work to cover my time and materials and perhaps the right clientele did not come along.

I have now made two tops for the Twelve X Twelve Kilauea challenge. A detail on the second one is at the top of this post. I changed it to gray scale to disguise it. Her is a detail from the other:

I hope to get them quilted tomorrow. I am not sure which one will be the official piece. I need to get to work on some things for the Artists Among Us show. I need to do sleeves and hanging slats on several of the big quilts that have never been in a show.

Today, the dirt arrived for my garden beds. That is another big job to work on. Here is my new kitchen garden ready to be planted. It is up on the side of the garage. I will do some herbs and lettuces and maybe some tomatoes, later in the spring.

Scooter is checking it for me.

This morning on my walk, I saw a group of Dogwood trees that were just gorgeous. I took these photos with my iPhone. I am always impressed with the quality of the iPhone pics.

So, I am so happy to have gotten through this injury fairly well. I am still not doing any heavy lifting.
