Toot Sweet

Thursday, December 6th, 2012

I had a minor disaster yesterday. I lost the screw from the hinge on my new red glasses. I know there are repair kits, but these were so new that I wanted to make sure they got repaired properly. That was not my disaster. I went out to the Kaiser Vision Center to get them fixed after lunch. I also stopped at Macy’s to find something to wear to my upcoming semi-fancy holiday events. I found a nice glittery gold sweater that I can wear with black or brown pants. That was easy.

I got home with just barely enough time to dial in for an SDA teleconference with the San Antonio conference staff. My computer was not behaving. I couldn’t open mail where the e-mail with the phone  and code were. It said I had to close mail and restart to repair the index. It proceeded to download over 10000 e-mails, most were in my delete file. It took almost an hour to get the e-mail working again. Some of the retrieved e-mails were totally blank. So that was my disaster. I missed the tele-conference and had to apologize to every one.

This morning we were to have new insulated honeycomb shades installed in the kitchen. He was supposed to come between 9 and 11. At 11, I made a call to find out what was up. He was running late which was a problem because Scooter needed to be taken for a walk, Mr C had a dental hygiene appt. and I had a hair cut appt.  He turned up at 11:30 and took no time at all to do the install. Scooter got walked and we made our appts. The shades are beautiful – bronze in color – to match the woodwork and the granite counter top. I loved the curtains that I had made from a mid-century fabric, but they got too messy over the sink. We decided we wanted a cleaner, less fussy look.

I have been working on the next and last 12 x 20 piece for the Twelve blog. The theme is sweet. I came up with jazz as my quilt theme because you know, jazz is s-weet! Here are some of the fabrics I am working with and for once, I am not going out to buy more batiks.

I am having fun working on this. The reveal is 12/12/2012!!

Here is today’s 3 x 3.

I’m in Print

Monday, November 19th, 2012

I am pretty sure my friends are tired of hearing about this, but for me this is pretty darned awesome. I have two articles in the Winter 2012 issue of Art Quilting Studio. I received my copy today. It will hit the newsstands December 1. One article is about how I turn my art cloth into art quilts. I also have a tutorial on discharging.

The other article is about my Aspen Quilts.

In the back of the magazine is section titled Patchwork where several art quilts are featured. I have two pages there.

The issue is large and packed with wonderful articles, many of them by friends so I feel that I am in such good company — Connie Rose, Katherine Sands, Rayna Gilman, Kathie Briggs, Arlee Barr, Ellen Lindner, Dominie Nash, Natalya Aikens, Roxanne Lessa, Laurie Brainerd, Gloria Hansen, Clairan Ferrono and others I don’t know that well. Ricë Freeman-Zachery has two articles featuring Sandra Meech and Jenny Hearn.

This morning, I had my hips x-rayed and am waiting to hear what it shows. Then, Mr C and I got the Twelve by Twelve Colorplay quilts packed up and sent them on their way to Brenda Smith in Australia.

I still had time to work on the organ quilt. I finished the background quilting and started working on the embellishments. Here is a section of the wood filigree that will be fused in place and stitched.

And, here is today’s 3 x 3.

Getting Things Done

Sunday, November 18th, 2012

I have been putting my life on hold while I deal with the hip problem. So things are piling up and time is marching  on. I have had the Twelve by Twelve Colorplay quilts in my possession since quilt Expo where they lost the bags we had prepared for them and the shipping boxes. I also promised one of the Twelves that I would photograph her quilts. I also wanted to photograph mine.

They need to be heading off Down Under and very soon. So, today, I prepared new bags and labels and did the photography, I really love these quilts every time I look at them I see new and lovely work by my fellow Twelves.

Last week, my Theme quilts arrived home after traveling around the world. Terry has taken on the job of packing them up and sending them back to the other Twelves.

Tomorrow, I am going back to Kaiser for x-rays on my hip. I hope they can figure out what is causing the pain.

We are due for some very stormy weather and high winds. Hope it doesn’t keep me  home bound. I have things to get done!!

Hello October

Monday, October 1st, 2012

Just a quick post. Blue-purple is the 3 x 3 color for this month. I put away the red orange and found a small supply of blue purples.

October  is one of my favorite months. It is my birthday. I am going to get to visit my adorable grandbaby, Paige, later this month.

I have a lot of goals I have set for myself — one is to get my website update. It is in desperate need of a good cleaning and some new work.

That is about it for tonight. I am tired and going to bed early.

I hope you got a chance to take a look at all of the maverick quilts on the Twelve blog today. Such a variety of interpretations.

A Red-head Maverick

Sunday, September 30th, 2012

This is my maverick 12 x 20 quilt. I am not that thrilled with it. I didn’t allow enough time to flesh it out.

Here is the story. I live in a part of the country where it is almost a badge of honor for women of my age to let their hair go naturally gray. Many women in the northwest do not even bother to have their hair styled— they just let it grow and grow and grow.

My hair, if I let it go natural, would be thin and stringy and an ugly shade of mousy gray. I was thrilled when my stylist gave me red hair about 10 years ago. It totally fit my personality and made me happy. I had always loved my grandmother’s red hair.

Recently, my husband made a comment about liking my hair when it is more brown, like when he first met me. The maverick in me came out. I went in to have my monthly hair color done and asked Kevin for something new and edgy, but still in the red zone. We settled on a darker, burgundy red — in the sunlight, it looked a little purple.

The next day, we stopped in at a local gallery event. There were 3 long haired gray women talking at the counter. I overheard one of them say, I could never dye my hair purple! I laughed and walked up to the group, as the owner was one of them, and started talking to her. They were all taken aback a bit. That night, I decided that my maverick quilt would be about my hair.

I don’t do faces, hair, or people in quilts so I settled on a maverick red/purple fish. I couldn’t find gray batiks that I liked so I settled for these neutral fabrics.
