Losing It!

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

crazy-woman-01.jpg

I am up to my eyeballs in stuff. I have piles of colorful fabric that I am using to cut little squares for my color exercises in Lizzie’s class. I love doing the exercises, but I can’t really concentrate.

The Chocolate piece is giving me fits. I am having a problem with my printer and I keep getting ink smudges. Today is D-day as in Done Day. I must find a solution.

The new fridge is arriving momentarily. That means moving food from the current fridge to the new fridge after it is installed. Then I have to move garage fridge stuff to that fridge once it is moved to the garage.

My hair is a mess so I am taking a couple of hours this afternoon to get new color and a trim.

I haven’t been able to read blogs or answer e-mails. I am sorry and I miss you all. I will be back.

But, I really did lose it at WW, yesterday. I lost the gain of last week plus another half pound so I am at a new low. Whoopee! At least there is something good in this post.

Ta! Back to work. You will see Chocolate tomorrow. Terry!, I am making a list so that my left brain can be in control for a bit.

I’m Really Hard at Work

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Thought I would check in to let you all know that I am busy, busy. Well, I am probably watching wa-a-ay to much political stuff on TV. I am such the political junkie – really. And the events of the last few days have just fueled my addiction.

Since I came of age in the 60’s, I was thrilled with the Kennedy endorsement of Obama. I thought his speech was fantastic. I actually became a Democrat in the early 60’s because of JFK and Mr C. I think this is why Obama caught my attention early on. It will be a tough fight to win the nomination, but I Believe. Yes We Can!!!!

I have been working on the chocolate piece. I will get it quilted tomorrow. Here is a sneak peek of it coming out of my big Epson Printer. It is printed on silk charmeuse.

This week we are doing color exercises in Liz’s class. I just realized I did one of the exercises wrong. Have to do it again, but then I love to cut up little swatches of fabric and glue them into my sketch book, I really do.

That’s it for tonight.

Sunshine and Chocolate

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

Two of my favorite things in the world. It is still cold, but the landscape is brilliant with clear air and winter sunshine. It streams in the windows and takes away the chill. Maggie loves to find sunshine and just bask in it.

The shrink wrapped windows seem to be working. Maggie and I are quite comfy in the basement.

I have been working on my chocolate piece for the Twelve X Twelve challenge. It is due at the end of this month. I am having fun with this. Sorry, I can’t share too much, but I am taking photos and will share the process later. I will show you this, which may make it into the final piece. I call it chocolate shibori.

I have also been working on my homework for the Better Art by Design class. I had lots of fun tonight cutting up paper and making small compositions.

Thanks for all the positive comments about flipping the latest construction piece. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. I am going to keep the latest configuration.

My car is in the shop, getting repaired from the accident I had last month. I won’t have it back until Friday so Mr C and I are sharing the Jeep.

The Ubiquitous Dandelion

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

Existing or being everywhere at the same time : constantly encountered — the definition of ubiquitous and so it seemed the appropriate name for my dandelion piece for the Twelve X Twelve challenge. (Link in the sidebar.)

Here are a couple of close-ups that are clickable for a larger view.

Here is the process I went through to achieve the final design.

I started with this photo of a dandelion gone to seed that I took on our trip to Woodinville, WA.

In Photoshop, I created the following design by using a filter to create a line design which I reversed to make the white parts black.

I knew that one side of this was too mushy to make a good thermofax screen so I cut it in half and mirrored the two parts to make a better design.

I created screens of this in 3 different sizes.

My original intent was to try to discharge to white on a black fabric. A chlorine discharge did not give the white color I wanted. I tested some thiox, but I did not have time to steam it and know that it would work before my trip to San Francisco.

I then turned to this overdyed piece of cotton that I had in my stash.

On a test piece, using Soft Scrub, I got this wonderful image – in bright yellow.

Discharging is not an exact science so I didn’t know what I would get when I used a larger piece of fabric.

I almost forgot to photograph this before I started stitching. The photo was taken on the floor of the car as we were driving so the quality is not the best!

As you can see, the fabric discharged in many different ways. But I was so excited to have the white areas where I could do the fluffy dandelions. I was fortunate to have purchased some hand-dyed Perle cotton in variegated yellows and greens. I also used an off -white Perle cotton. After I had hand-embroidered the dandelions, I was not sure what to do with the background. Machine stitching seemed as if it would spoil the integrity of the hand work I had done. I tried some linear background stitching – but that did not work. Then, I decided the wonky all-over stitching worked best. I am very happy with the result.

Be sure to go check out the Twelve X Twelve blog to see all of the varied and wonderful dandelions.
